"Once, maybe twice in a lifetime, if you are fortunate, you'll find yourself in the presence of someone so truly gifted at their craft that the word "awe" seems pitifully inadequate when searching for a proper descriptive of you're experiencing. Last Friday I spent the day on a stream in southwest Virginia with Dave Hise. The day was more and better than I ever expected.
From the time we first approached the stream that morning, when Dave started pointing to fish and directing my casts so that my drifts would stand the best chance of success, until late that afternoon when I looked over at Dave and, exhausted, said "Let's call it," Dave was the consummate professional, guide, mentor, chef and friend.
Anyone who knows Dave will say that he knows trout, their behavior and their feeding habits. He is a masterfully innovative tier and creator of flies, a gifted and infinitely patient teacher, and most importantly a good man. He gives 100% of himself 100% of the time to give his clients the most successful, memorable day possible.
By any account, we had an epic day. The weather was perfect and the water was low and clear. Even with my meager skills, the number of trout that came to the net approached 20 with a few more that fought hard and were released a little earlier than planned.
Listen to what Dave tells you and you'll end the day with a wealth of knowledge you didn't begin the day with. I'm already looking forward to the next day with my friend Dave - and the day after that.

"I cant express in writing how much fun we had on our day on the river with Dave. Got a bit of rain the night before, but Dave worked us through many spots and where the fish sit with his vast knowledge of the stream. We ended up catching some really beautiful Rainbows and enjoying an wonderful day on the river with a great lunch right on the bank. Looking forward to our next trip back with Dave!!!"

"I had wanted to learn to fly fish for a few years and David was recommend by a business contact. I didn’t know exactly what to expect but he made everything very simple, all I had to do was show up. A few minutes practicing the basics and we walked down stream and started catching trout. It was awesome to say the least. I have recommended Dave to several friends already and suggest anyone wanting to learn, its money and time well spent."

"My experience with Dave is a lifetime experience. His professionalism, his knowledge,humor, excitement and his love for flyfishing is just priceless!!!!!! I had the opportunity of catching Ms. Bertha and I don't know who was more excited....me or Dave and she was HUGE!!!!! did I say HUGE!!!! The waters that he has taken us...we have caught tons of trophy trout. I have guided with Dave for two years and I will do it every year as long as he is a guide!!! If you have never met Dave...you must...he is the best in the business!!!!Long Live Big Bertha..

Fishing with Dave Hise owner of Casters Fly Shop in Hickory, NC was an as fine an experience as I have ever had and I have been fly fishing for 58 years. Dave knew what to use, how to present it and where "within inches", of where that presentation should drift. After fishing with this man for a few hours there was no doubt in my mind that if I could do what what Dave requested my fly would drift right in the face of a good fish. Day one was a 25 fish day with many in the 3 to 5 pound class. On day two we hunted a fish that Dave had been seeing since last fall. The water was colored because of previous rain fall so we could not sight fish but Dave knew several holding spots where this double figured fish would lie. The evidence of Daves knowledge can be seen on his Face Book page. We got her, an eighteen pound Kamloops rainbow my largest "trout" ever.
Not only is Dave Hise an outstanding guide but he is a fine man and a delight to be with. He is the essence of what you would expect of the title "Orvis Endorsed Guide". Dave has not seen the last of me, I will be fishing with this master as often as my old body will allow.
Thanks Dave it was a heck of a trip."

"Dave has shown me the ultimate fly fishing experience. He has patience, great advice and shares such encouragment. Dave is my opinion of the ultimate guide. "I grew up in Hickory, North Carolina with nothing much to do. I decided to take up fly-fishing and went into Casters, Dave Hise's fly shop. He taught me everything I know about the sport and I grew to love it dearly. After learning how to fish and getting into it, he took me on a guide. We landed fish after fish, anywhere between a strong fighting fish to an eleven to fifteen pound monster. Never had more fun in my life then on those days when we'd head up early in the morning and come back late. All in all, you can't beat the guiding service or the experience you can learn through such an avid fly fisherman himself."

"Yesterday I spent another fantastic day on the water with my friend and guide, Dave Hise.
The weather and water were polar opposites of the balmy fall day and low, slow, gin-clear water we'd experienced last fall. The day was cold and windy and the water was deep, fast and turbid from the snow run-off.
My second drift found me firmly attached to the first of many fish brought to the net that day. I rarely get hung up on numbers any more, but we caught a lot of fish this day and they all put a serious bend in my 5 wt.
Throughout the day, Dave did what he does better than any guide I've ever known - he coached, mentored and encouraged with the patience and passion that is Dave Hise. I came away from our time on that Virginia stream exhausted, completely happy and with a far greater understanding of trout behavior than I began the day with.
I count myself fortune to call Dave Hise my friend.
Let's get a day in the fall in the books, Dave! I'm already looking forward to it!"

"I have been out with Dave before and I always say "he can't top this", but he does.On this day out what I was most impressed about is Dave's knowledge and understanding of where the trout would be under the conditions we were fishing ( Not Very Good Weather, Bitter Cold )In spite of the conditions we had a banner day. When we would wade down the river Dave would point out an area and explain because of previous weather and today's conditions there should be trout there and here is the type of fly taht we should use. Lo and Behold there was trout there. I learned so much that day.Great experience. I would highly recommend Dave to anyone, which I have done many times."

"Not being that good at fly-fishing, I wanted to see if I could get better. I heard about guided trips but was always scared. But no more. After talking around, I found Dave Hise and wow what an amazing experience this past weekend. Not knowing what to expect going in, I vowed to listen as paying for a guide intimidated me, but boy am I glad I did. What an experience and education. Thank You so much. Dave Hise to me epitomizes what an artist and scientist and student and teacher all bring to the table collectively. What a professional and at the same time a gentlemen. Dave truly is gifted and talented and I have the pictures to prove it. Thank you sir."

"I first met Dave on a bitter cold day on the Little River in VA, 2008, when he guided three of us to great fishing and threw in a stream-side lunch to boot! Subsequently, Dave has guided successfully several friends of mine and most recently my son-in-law, all beginning fly fisherman.
Dave has complete knowledge of trout, when they will feed and what flies will entice them. He knows how to present them and is able to communicate this to even beginners. His patience in teaching coupled with his calm demeanor and remarkable work ethic all but guarantees the greenest of beginners the thrill of feeling a trout on the line.
I have had the good fortune of being guided by some of the country's best guides at Teton Valley Lodge. Dave Hise stands out above the rest as the best guide I have had the pleasure of knowing. I heartily recommend him to all of my fly fishing friends!"

"This was my first time fly fishing, so I was a little nervous and wasn't sure what to expect. We fished on a private stream in Virginia and it couldn't have been a better day.
Dave was the consummate professional- informative, patient, helpful and friendly. His knowledge of all aspects of fly fishing (the weather, the fish, the streams, techniques, etc) was amazing. He put me on the fish. I netted 21 and had many long line releases as well. Easily the best day of fishing I've ever had.
I can't recommend Dave enough. If you want to spend an amazing day catching fish and learning or improving your technique, reserve him asap. You will not regret it."

"My father and I have fished with Dave multiple times over the past few years. Not only has each trip been successful (multiple shots sight fishing to fish in the 5-10lbs class) and gratifying, Dave always helps us uncover new aspects of fly fishing for trout that certainly increase our overall knowledge and success - well beyond his "home" rivers in SW Virginia and North Carolina.
In over 30+ years spent fly fishing across the Rockies (NM, CO, WY, MT, UT, ID) for freshwater species and Florida Keys for saltwater species, never have I worked with such an exceptional guide/captain as Dave Hise.
As opposed to most that simply focus on the how, Dave is a true student/practitioner of the art that teaches the what & why of fly fishing: entomology, understanding stream conditions, reading water, and the important elements of a perfect drift (right flies, correct water depth and speed) than compel the fish to strike, almost instinctively. Dave is so in tune with his surroundings and clients' needs that he is able to simplify the (apparently) complex, irrespective of an individual's experience or expertise.
Believe me, as a former fly fishing guide in SW Montana in the 90's, it is especially difficult to get clients (day-in and day-out) to understand and appreciate the subtleties/nuances that are oh so important to consistent success on the river - something Dave really excels at!
I cannot more strongly recommend Dave Hise to anyone that is interested in learning how to think like a guide while fishing he beautiful private waters of SW Virginia and North Carolina."

"My wife and I went fishing with Dave Hise 2-11-13. My wife is not an outdoors person. Honestly, she dreaded the trip. After meeting Dave, riding with him, etc she had really warmed up to the idea of trying it. Dave had her all the gear ready including waders and boots that fit. As always Dave sees fish that I never see. He seems to always put on the right flies, and tells us exactly where to cast. We caught a lot of fish---- and a good many big fish. My wife screamed almost the whole day except when we were eating his delicious lunch. Dave is so knowledgable and patient I won't fish with anyone else in N C. I always recommend Dave to anyone that wants to catch fish and have a great time in general."

"I went fishing with Dave Hise with my husband. We went to a private stream. This was my second time ever fly fishing so I was a real amateur. Dave never left my side. He was always checking my flies and untangling my messe. He never complained and the most patient person I have ever seen. I couldn't believe how many fish I caught and how big some were. The lunch he served was wonderful.My husband doesn't eat dinner that good at home. Thiswas my second time fishing but it won't be my last. I can't wait to go back, ut only with Dave. This trip will always be remembered because of Dave. He is the best! My husband has fished with Dave a number of times, and he won't fish with anyone else. Dave made a trip that I was not excited about the day before into a life long memory."

"In my lifetime of 59 short years, I had just about given up on finding a honest to goodness professional that walks the walk and talks the talk. Such a rare breed in today's world of fakes. You are not one of Dave's customers. You are one of Dave's clients and if you don't know the difference look it up in the dictionary and you will appreciate the comparison.
To be taken under the wing of Dave Hise as a beginner is a wonderful experience and whatever one decides to do with the knowledge he shares, one will walk away with a true, no-nonsense idea of what he has dedicated his life to.

"I've been wanting to take up fly fishing for some time now. Many have told me that a lesson was the best way learn the basics. Dave was recommended to me as "one of the best" so I decided to jump in. Let me tell you..... Dave is the Rory McIlroy of fly fishing instructors. His knowledge, expertise and patience are unparalleled. There was never a point where I felt nervous or overwhelmed (well, I was a little nervous in the beginning). He was always there to walk me through the areas that were difficult for me to comprehend. His method of teaching is easy to follow. It is a process and the steps of the process are easy to follow if you remember 1, 2, 3... On top of that, his lunch was 5 star. I never new that a gourmet meal could be created from the back of a Nissan but now I understand. Thanks Dave! Now im ready for my gear :-)

"I had a spectacular day on the stream with Dave. He taught me so much in such a short period of time. The fish were huge!!! He taught me where the fish were, about flies and what to look for on the stream.This truly was a lifetime experience. I will defintely go again this year. It was a day that I hoped would never ever end."

Additional Thoughts:Fine, honest gentleman in every way
"I have fished a lot with Dave. Yesterday was the best of all. His knowledge and patience is by far the best I've ever seen, and I have fished with many guides. I caught more and bigger fish with Dave than I ever have. He was constantly checking flies, knots, tippetts, etc. he is awesome to be with on or off the water. I can't speak too highly of Dave!"
