"After several trips to the Destin area with my own boat, I finally decided it was time for a guide. The first time I tried to book, weather ended the trip before it began. The next time down, we hooked up with Jason. I think Jason lost five pounds polling us around all morning. Great knowledge of the area and really worked hard to put us on some great fish. I highly recommend these guys!"

"Not sure what the other reviewer above was expecting, maybe blind casting into a pond or a manatee watching trip, but David is one of, if not THE number one Tarpon guide on the planet. I have fished hundreds of different guides across the country, a lot of them great fisherman, teachers, and good people, but he is number one in knowledge, effort, and passion for the species. If your biggest concern in saltwater fly fishing is a life vest then take a cruise, if it is to have an amazing fly fishing experience then David is your man. Also if you cannot cast it is your fault and only your fault, the guide just puts you in the best position possible and then tells you what to do, if you cannot perform, then it is on you the angler."

Not Impressed,

"My wife took me fly fishing for my birthday with this guide. She has only been on a boat twice and was nervous. I had to ask for life jackets after we had been on the water for a few miles. Neither of us are expert casters, but I certainly expected to be put on fish barely bigger than shad. If I lose them then that's on me. He was very polite and courteous to my wife overall and he's a great caster, which is why he gets two stars. Certainly not worth the money, not a positive person, and not a "feel good" experience."

Response from Orvis:By Orvis Customer ServiceJune 15, 2012
Upon receiving this review we contacted the customer and the guide service for more details. Based on our review of the details we can understand why the client may have been disappointed, but the experience seemed to be driven by the fears and needs of the other passenger. Orvis highly recommends that anyone going out with a saltwater fly-fishing guide in open water make sure that all parties on the trip be more than comfortable with idea of being in the ocean in a small boat, even if fishing inshore. While large expanses of open water are magnificent places to be, not everyone is comfortable in this environment. Orvis-endorsed guides are always going to err on the side of the comfort and safety of anyone on the boat, and if one of the passengers has no desire to be out there, it will undoubtedly adversely affect the overall experience.
