Tumbleweed Lodge, SD

For more than 25 years Tumbleweed Lodge has provided world class wingshooting experiences in central South Dakota on the Bollweg's farm. Whether you're targeting one species or "The Grand Slam of the Dakota's," autumn in the Northern Plains means one thing...South Dakota upland bird hunting at Tumbleweed Lodge. The Chinese ring necked pheasant may be king, but the untamed prairies of South Dakota are also home to Hungarian partridge, Sharp-tail grouse, and the elusive Greater prairie chicken.

"I have been going to Tumbleweed Lodge for 5 years running now. Would not even think of going anywhere else. The people are great and the birds are plenty. I look forward to this each year after my harvest is done."

"The Tumbleweed Lodge is Mecca for the upland birdhunter. In my travels as an outdoor writer I've had a chance to hunt many great bird hunting operations across the country but none that I have visited can hold a candle to the Tumbleweed. It is the cream of the crop! Their dog work is off the charts, with labs that quarter a field better than most spaniels. Their bird cover is scrupulously planted to add cover and food for the birds and laid out perfectly for large or small groups of hunters. One of things I like best about the Tumbleweed is if you arrive in a small group they will set up your hunt for that size group. Unlike most operations in the Dakotas that throw you in with all the other hunters at the lodge to make these massive groups to push fields where in many cases so many shots are fired at flushing birds nobody is sure who shot the bird. This will not happen at the Tumbleweed. The accommodations at the Tumbleweed are five star and equal their bird hunting. Last but not least the number of pheasants here will astound you!"

Additional Thoughts:Great habitat and terrain. Awesome shooting backgrounds.
"At Tumbleweed you never tire of hearing the endless call of Rooster, Rooster, Rooster even after hearing it hundreds of times during your stay at this fabulous hunting lodge. The Bollweg family is very gracious sharing their own beautifully appointed home with the Hunters. The food is fantastic and its a good thing Pheasant hunting requires all that walking. I have been hosting customers here for five years now and they are all clamoring to return the next year. I have already booked my trip for 2013 and I am counting the days."

"My hunting group first appeared on the Bollwegs' doorstep in 2005. We'd been trekking up to N. Dakota to take Pheasants for several years, but were searching for something better. Boy did we find it ! From the outset we recognized that we were in the company of true professional sportsmen. Don made us feel like we were old friends and even gave us a 3-hour tour of the countryside before we left. The accommodations exceed those of a Hilton and Chef Joe provides three gourmet quality meals every day. I'm saving the best for last... the hunting. There's no rush to get in the field before daylight. The birds are waiting on you and if you don't limit out before 10AM, it's because you need to spend more time on the range. Now they've even got an instructor on site to help with your shooting skills. Whether you're chasing up pheasants, sharpies, Hungarians, or prairie chickens, the professional guides will put you on the birds. I've never heard one word of complaint from the guide staff; they are always ready to get in another drive or shoot a round of clays before going in for lunch or dinner. We've been fortunate to have the services of Bill Sheid for the past 6 years and one could not ask for a better sport; although, by the camaraderie witnessed during the morning hunt preparations, I'd say that the entire guide staff is top notch. We haven't ever tried the deep winter hunts in the snow, but I'm told that they are well worth the discomfort of the cold and look forward to trying that adventure sometime in the future. At the end of the hunt each year, I say a prayer that the Good Lord will allow me to come back just one more time to hunt with my friends."

"I have been hunting pheasant at the tumbleweed lodge for over 10 years now with my father, brother, and other friends and family. I will recommend the Tumbleweed to anyone looking for the hunt of a lifetime and the true South Dakota upland bird hunting experience. Michael and his father Donny run a top notch organization good enough for governors, political celebrities and the common fellow from Texas! If you are looking for birds to shoot, a feast with every meal that would pass any 5-star test, along with a comfy bed, look no further, this is your place. What I appreciate most about the Tumbleweed is the family atmosphere that is present here. I have no use for a lodge with high headed guides and this is not that kind of lodge. You will always feel welcome, and you will make friends with the staff and Michael’s family as well. There just is no better hunting lodge in the United States!"
