"Prior to arranging our trip to C Lazy U, I spent a lot of time researching family vacations that would allow me to fly-fish but give my wife and three kids under age 7 a great experience as well. C Lazy U stood out based on reviews and descriptions, and I am very happy to report that our time spent there far exceeded any of our expectations.
Willow Creek, a tributary of the Colorado, cuts a wide valley through the heart of the ranch, with the surrounding hills covered by lodgepole pine and aspen forests and dotted with rocky points, balds, and unspoiled vistas of the Continental Divide and Rocky Mtn Natl Park in the distance. The ranch offers an incredible amount of activities for people of all interests. Given my interest in fly-fishing, I'll talk mostly of that, but by no means is that the focus of the ranch. Horseback riding, trap shooting, archery, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, spa treatments...and I haven't even begun to address the food.
Living on the coast, most of my fly-fishing has been in salt. I wanted to use this trip to learn more about trout fishing. I booked a half-day trip with Parker, the ranch's primary fly-fishing guide and activities director. He drove me a few miles south of the ranch to a private lease that C Lazy U has on the Colorado River. I can't overstate what a treasure this is. This stretch of the river is undeveloped (though at one time had been slated for development as a golf-course community) and (if I remember correctly) stretches for ~ 2-3 miles just outside of Granby. Private but very accessible, easily waded. Parker gave me a great practical introduction to trout tactics and trout stream anatomy, and by the end of the morning we had pulled in an ample number of browns and couple of sizable rainbows. I felt comfortable returning to the ranch and striking off on my own on Willow Creek. The ranch provided all the gear that I needed, including rod/reel, waders, and tackle. In addition, the general store of the ranch has a small selection of flies and leader/tippet material for sale if you bring your own equipment.
Access points to Willow Creek were easily reached by foot. Very gratifying to catch rainbows on my own with good regularity by the end of the trip. The ranch also has a medium sized diversion pond that they keep stocked with rainbows; this is a great place to get kids engaged in fishing. My wife took an introductory fly-fishing lesson from Claus, the ranch's Renaissance man (he also provides tennis lessons and great conversation), and after a couple of rainbows of her own, I'm fairly certain she's hooked as well.
There is so much more to the ranch that I haven't described, but the overarching theme is that this is a place that will bend over backwards for you to ensure that your experience is a good one. The friendliness, the willingness to assist, the genuine goodwill...I could tell that people were really happy to work there and it definitely translates to the guests. We just felt happy and content. And tired. And full. Very full."
