This is the hotel Pablo Neruda would design had he been something other than a poet writing odes about tomatoes, lemons and love. The striking building sits on a grassy hillside overlooking the water at Natales, just an hour or so south of Paine National Park. It's a perfect base to explore Paine Park and is close enough for day trips while having better access to the fjords and lesser known mountains along the coast. The design provides magnificent views everywhere, although the reason for going is the outdoors, and Chilean architect German del Sol has created a stylish basecamp in Patagonia that is also a comfortable refuge from the elements. Outstanding guided excursions are provided daily. Nowhere has the quality of guides improved so much in the last 10 years than in Chile, where the youthful guides seem as capable of Neruda at expression their passion - for the land - in English or Spanish. You can hike, ride, mountain bike, watch birds, and explore Paine Park, then return to the coast for a swim in the heated pool, enjoy a gourmet meal of local produce, seafood and lamb with delicious Chilean wines.
