ToughChew® Dog's Nest® with Polyester Fill

Paws down, the toughest and softest ToughChew® fabric we've ever created. Our original ToughChew chew-resistant bed was tough. This bed is even tougher. Developed exclusively by Orvis, these beds are constructed with two layers for the ultimate in chew protection, and feature an outer fabric engineered in a full ripstop weave from incredibly tough and durable 1,000-denier nylon. The zipper is constructed of solid brass for added strength and durability. As tough as these beds are, they're also luxuriously soft, with a silky nylon microfiber surface that your dog will love. All of these features add up to a bed so tough, we'll refund your money if your dog chews through it. No questions asked. Cover is removable and washable. Dimensions are approximate. Imported.

First pet bed to last more than a week!,
February 21, 2013
By: chocoloco
from Anchorage, Alaska
"Picked up a pretty much pure bred chocolate lab (Mason) from the local animal control facility at 10 months. Somehow overlooked the previous owner's comment "...randomly destructive behavior".
Before I arrived at the right combination, Mason had chewed off the back of my back seats, and the back of the passenger side seat cover; halfway through the driver's side seatbelt, a half dozen successively cheaper pet beds (the last one the same day it was purchased), a friend's beach towel, eventually dozens of dog toys, artificial and real bones. The only things that have withstood Mason's chewing has been Kongs and Orvis' Tough Chew Dog's Nest. They (the Kong and the Dog's nest) have done wonders 'taming the savage beast'. Our first one will stay in the Subaru's wayback, and the next one will stay at the house.
If only Orvis could stock enough brown beds!!!

Didn't stand up to our Great Dane Puppy,
May 1, 2013
By: NOVADane
from Northern Virginia
"Our Great Dane puppy went through about 15 beds in her first year, pulling out stuffing has always been her favorite passtime. We have caught her in the act in the middle of the night, and she tries to get away with it if we leave the room for 5 minutes. These toughchew beds definitely lasted longer than any other brand but she still chewed through the fabric once, and the biggest problem has been the zipper. She is able to pull the zipper apart, not by unzipping it, but actually pulling apart the zipper teeth. It is possible to backtrack the zipper maybe 10 or 15 times, but eventually the zipper teeth bend and you can no longer get it to close. Wish Orvis could improve this issue by stress testing a few more heavy duty types of zippers. Another thing is that inside the bed the stuff is in another zippered case. This case is the thinnest cheapest fabric. We may have spent a little less time cleaning up stuffing if this interior case was made of a higher quality fabric. Don't think these two things are too much to ask when you pay the same amount for a dog bed as a mattress.
All that being said, we have been very happy with the Orvis Customer Service and their guarantee."

Pretty Tough,
April 28, 2013
By: FlyingB
"The bed starts out bulky and stiff, but it breaks in after a few days. Our dogs usually do their best to get underneath whatever beds we put in their kennels, but they actually seem to enjoy lounging on the ToughChew.
The ToughChew is definitely better constructed than many competitors' chew-resistant beds; however, I was surprised that the zipper pulls, which are quite large, don't completely tuck away. One of our dogs quickly realized that pulling back the zipper was the easiest way to the polyester filling. We finally just cut the zipper pulls off, but both beds eventually gave way to the persistence of our chewers. Still, each bed lasted for a month or so (when other beds lasted only minutes). We just ordered two more, and I plan on getting more if/when the new ones give out. As Orvis says, the bed isn't "chew proof," but it seems to last longer than anything else on the market."

Good bed,
April 19, 2013
By: LabradorOwner
from Raleigh, NC
"This bed is good in that our youngest lab hasn't been able to chew through it. It washes up very well and our dogs like to lay on it.
My only complaint (and reason for 4 not 5 stars) would be that the insert got flat very quickly, our current model is less than 2 years old and pretty much completely flat - and no amount of fluffing can make it soft again."

Not Happy,
April 18, 2013
By: Leeann13
from Charlotte,NC
"So i received my dogs bed about a month ago as soon as i took it out of the box i knew i wasn't going to like it but figured i would let her be the judge. Well it makes lots of noise just like others have mentioned its like an air mattress. She doesn't seem to be able to get comfortable on it she just kinda hangs her head on it and then her rest of her body on the ground, really not the reason i buy a bed. She was also able to chew threw the cover within minutes I've tried to stop her as soon as i catch her so its not that bad - I would not recommend this bed"

New style is a big downgrade,
January 25, 2013
By: figtree
"This is my Pointer's 2nd tough chew bed. Previously, I had the old herringbone style. It was very attractive, and while my dog did eventually chew some small holes in it, it took him around 8 months. I informed Orvis who true to their word recently replaced the bed with no questions asked.
However, unfortunately this new style of tough chews is a big downgrade from their old ones. Not only did my dog chew numerous holes in the new bed within a few hours, but it also is not as attractive as the old style, and has a strange air mattress like feel to it (rigid plastic that makes crunching noises when the dog tries to settle into it). The texture and noise seem to bother my dog, which is why I think he started chewing on it so quickly.
While Orvis is a great company and I'm really happy at the way they stand behind their products, I probably wouldn't recommend this bed if your dog is any type of chewer."

Consider carefully,
January 14, 2013
By: Lovetofishthesouth
"I purchased the first bed last fall. My 11 year old aging lady chewed a hole in it. True to the guarantee, it was replaced. However, the customer service person indicated it would only be replaced one time and remarked that perhaps "he/she would learn that beds are for sleeping, not for chewing." Our old lady has now chewed a very large hole in the replacement. I would only recommend the tough chew for dogs who don't chew at all."

Great Customer Service,
December 20, 2012
By: HuskyDog
"I purchased the older version of this bed and unfortunately my 65lb huskey was able to chew through it. I will say that the bed lasted MUCH longer than any other dog bed has, but it is not indestructable if you have a chewer like mine. Orvis customer service has been great though! I am very impressed with their guarantee and the way they handled the return. I know the bed is expensive, but with the guarantee in place I would recommend anyone give it a try."

Stitching Faulty???,

"Well, I have 2 of these dog beds and have big dogs (Danes and Labs) who do NOT chew. I like the material. It is easy to vacuum. Also, the cover is very easy to remove and it washes/dries very quickly.
Others have commented on the new stuffing but I would still recommend purchasing the cover and then, getting your own stuffing.
The only issue I have had is with the stitching. In less than 45 days, the stitching is coming undone and this had now happened 2x. I pull out my needle and thread to fix it but am disappointed that a product at this price, and with this advertising would have a problem with the stitching coming undone.
I have older dogs that do not chew or pull on the dog beds. I have other dog beds without any issues. So, not sure why this is happening.
Anyway, Orvis Customer service is perfect. They do stand by their guarantee which is why I bought the second Tough Chew, thinking the first one was just a fluke. I would definitely recommend this product for anyone to try with their dogs because at this price you sure want/need that Orvis guarantee."

Excellent Service,
December 2, 2012
By: MickB

"OK... so the bed is not indestructible but it is by far the best and most durable bed we have found, and it is definitely "Tough Chew". Our Wolfhound Pup has managed to eat 2 now and Orvis have been really true to their word, fantastic customer service, no quibble guarantee... I would recommend them to everyone... and the beds are good, it's a puppy... puppies chew."

Not chewable but uncomfortable,
November 29, 2012
By: Poodlefan
from Bethesda, MD
"My standard poodle (60 lbs) had the previous tough chew bed with a herringbone cover. He chewed three holes in the cover. Orvis immediately refunded my money, but the bed has been redesigned. This newer bed is full of air and the dog cannot get comfortable. It makes a crunching noise when he lays on it. He refuses to lay on the bed and lays on the hard wood next to it. I tried putting his favorite blanket over it, but the floaty air filled feeling seems to really upset him."

A little better than average,
November 28, 2012
By: 66wildcat
from Memphis, TN.
"Bought a medium tough chew (older herringbone pattern). It lasted longer than I thought it would but within the month there was a 3 - 4 inch hole chewed around the seam. No more holes appeared so I waited awhile and ordered one of the newer styles for another dog. Told the cust. serv. person about the first one and its small hole so I recieved the second bed free of charge, as advertised. After a couple weeks, the second dog managed to chew a small hole near one corner but seems to have given up also. Need another bed but am hesitant to order because of the price."

If it sounds too good to be true...,
November 25, 2012
By: Chewer
"Our dog chewed right through the corner of this bed. On the sizing, she's comfortable on the medium, but she only weighs 30 pounds. I can't imagine that a dog twice her size would be comfortable. Although it is a good bed, I rated it 1 star because it costs $150 and it does not live up to its name."

Truly Chew Resistant,
November 18, 2012
By: Gjerstp
from Danbury CT
"I bought two of these beds for my two yellow labs who before had chewed up every other bed I had bought. I checked with Orvis that they were really returnable if they didn't meet expectations, and took the chance. But they did. The dogs looked very comfortable as soon as they tried the beds, and they never chewed on them. I did buy my beds a year ago, and I see the covers are different - I have tattersall pattern. But I'm buying reserve covers for the beds now, hoping that they will work as well."

Destroyed in a day!,
November 7, 2012
By: Frustrated2
from Baltimore
"I bought this bed because of the money back guarantee if my dogs chewed through it. I have never had a bed that would last more than a day. So I thought this "Tough Chew" bed would be the answer. It was not. I have 2 labs, a 5 year old and a 7 year old, and this bed had 2 giant holes it in in less than 24 hours. I guess they will just have to sleep on the cold slate floor this winter. Like the other reviewers, this was a waste of my money but I had to try."

Dogs can't chew it, but it is not comfortable,
November 4, 2012
By: novadog
from Fairfax, Virginia
"I purchased this bed for my senior dog (her first bed was an Orvis bolster bed and it was great!) because our puppy kept chewing up any beds that I bought for either of them. The puppy couldn't chew through this bed. That is the ONLY good thing about this bed. First, there is no way a 70 lb. dog could fit on the medium bed. My 38 lb. black lab mix just cannot get comfortable on it. She kind of uses it like a pillow, or just gives up and walks away. The younger dog (28 lb. golden mix) fits on it, so I would say the medium is only good for dogs up to 30 pounds. The material feels like an aerobed, and it feels like there is air inside, making it very lumpy. The zipper is good and strong. It was very easy to remove the cover and wash, but I had to literally lay on it to push out all of the air to make the surface somewhat flat. It serves its purpose for holding up to a chewer, but when dogs walk away from a bed (and would rather lay on the hardwood floor), then I just can't recommend this bed. Like the other reviewer, I feel like I wasted $150."

Tough but not really,
October 27, 2012
By: Spinonelover
from New York
"I paid nearly $ 200. For this bed. My 11 month old bird hunting dog( soft mouth) broke the zipper the first night he used the bed. To top it off, the fabric is very stiff and the dog, although 75 lbs. cannot get comfortable. He slides from side to side and cannot burrow into the bed and get into a sleeping position. It feels almost like a tarp. I tried my 3 year old same breed dog on it, he lay beside it because he could not get comfortable on it. A waste!"
