Great Jacket,
May 2, 2013
By: AJohnelle
"This jacket is classy and sophisticated, but I would say that it fits large. I bought it for my boyfriend as a gift and he wears a 40R in suits. The 40 in this jacket was huuuuuuuge. I returned it and got a 36 and that fits him much better. I would definitely say to size down. The only other thing is he doesn't like the zipper being on the left side, which I suppose is common on women's jackets. It is a unisex jacket, so guys don't worry if you're thinking about buying it haha. It's not only for ladies. It's warm and a great windbreaker. I did notice that the 40 was not lined throughout the arms but the 36 was so I assume that varies between sizes. Overall, great jacket."

High Maintenance, Very Expensive,
March 17, 2013
By: YankeeHunter1
"My Barbour Beaufort jacket is the very worst piece of clothing, indeed, it is the worst thing, I have ever bought .
I view nearly everything I buy as equipment and I am inclined to go to great lengths to make sure I maintain my things properly; take care of your gear and your gear will take care of you. I have followed the directions from the staff of the New York City Orvis store where I purchased my Barbour Beaufort jacket and the materials enclosed in the jacket to the letter; returned it to the store for reproofing first year after purchase then every other year thereafter, never washed, only brushed clean. Despite my efforts to follow their directions to the letter my Barbour Beaufort jacket has quite literally fallen apart before my eyes.
I purchased my jacket to wear in New York City, specifically Manhattan. I have never worn the jacket in an environment more demanding than the subways and cabs of New York City. It has never accompanied me on an upland hunting trip. If it has ever been out of Manhattan it has never been in anything more rustic than someone’s lawn.
To date the repairs I have made are as follows:
Left Sleeve: cuff replaced – twice, one full length patch
Left Front: two patches; one before one after the hand warmer pocket
Right Sleeve: cuff replaced – twice, two sleeve patches
Right Front: one patch between hand warmer pocket and zipper
Rear: one patch extending nearly the full width of the jacket and one patch behind the right seam near the sleeve.
Interior: Two patches on the lining.
The patches from the most recent repairs made slightly more than a year ago, were made with a lighter material than the jacket is constructed from and are noticeably lighter in color and weight and do not seem to mate with the old material properly.
In total I have had 14 patches sewn onto the jacket, at an approximate cost of $x per patch, for a jacket I paid approximately $n for. Factoring in the every-other-year reproofings at another $x per nearly brings tears to my eyes. My repair and reproofing expenses have been nearly double the cost of the Barbour Beaufort. Additional time and trouble has been required to take the jacket in, pick the jacket up, and forego use of the jacket for six or more weeks while it is being reproofed and or repaired.
Even worse, despite having everything repaired on the jacket last year, it needs even more repairs this year:
Interior: Two more tears -requires patching.
Storm flap: Snap tearing off - requires patching.
Right Hand Warmer Pocket: Hole above seam.
Left Sleeve: hole on back of sleeve.
Right Sleeve: hole on back of sleeve.
Right Front Pocket: front and bottom of pocket disintegrating - entire pocket needs replacing.
Left Front Pocket: front and bottom of pocket disintegrating - entire pocket needs replacing.
Left Side Seam: fabric beginning to disintegrate - requires patching.
Game pouch: the zippers on both sides of the game pouch have completely torn away from the jacket, not that it really matters because both of them are broken – no idea which repairs are needed but they are extensive.
The aforeementioned “holes” are not tears, they are simply holes materializing out of “whole cloth” in non-stress points, non-friction points, and away from seams.
When I purchased my Barbour Beaufort the sales staff explained how the Barbour Beaufort aged and weathered and would have more character as it was waxed and patched over time. They went on to explain how there were people who had “patches on patches” and whether you bought a new one or simply kept your old one and repaired it was entirely up to you. Barbour recently updated its site to add the new language:
“How long a Barbour jacket will last very much depends on its use (or rather abuse in many cases). Undoubtedly, owners expect much more of a Barbour than any other garment because Barbour enables them to do more. They will subject themselves and their jackets to the severest conditions of weather, mud, animal contact and abrasion than they could ever contemplate if wearing anything less robust.”
My Barbour Beaufort has never encountered anything approaching a severe condition by outdoor clothing standards and has never encountered mud or any animal larger than a small dog. As for abrasion, brushing the top of a turn-style is the most abrasion the jacket has encountered.
I have purchased outerwear from all of the leading manufacturers of outerwear for business and recreation. I have had outerwear made of Gore-Tex, wool, leather, cashmere, nylon, cotton and many others. I have never encountered a piece of equipment that needed so much maintenance. I have also never owned a piece of equipment or clothing which failed so completely despite spending so much time, money, and effort to maintain as the Barbour Beaufort.
Also, the Barbour Beaufort is not waterproof, it is water resistant; if you wear it in a heavy rain for any amount of time you will see that water seeps through the seams and fabric.
I am very disappointed that Orvis would sell such a product under its name."

My favorite jacket,

"I've worn this coat in every condition from sunny and chilly to freezing and raining, and i'm always glad I have it.
When i first bought it, I thought I'd have buyer's remorse due to the price, but now that I've enjoyed it for awhile, I'd buy it all over again.
For style and function, it can't be beat!

Barbour Quality: Simply the Best,
January 1, 2013
By: WillCub

"This Beaufort in Sage is my first Barbour. I hope that it will not be my last.
The fit, the tailoring, the quality of the fabric, the warmth and ability to keep out moisture... there's not more I can add than anyone else has already.
It's expensive, sure (it was, in fact, my large Christmas present for 2012), but this jacket will likely outlive us all! You won't regret the purchase!"

Best Casual Jacket Ever!,
November 5, 2012
By: Gymguy
from Virginia
"I received my Barbour Beaufort about two weeks ago. It is my second Beaufort. The other one is green and I have had it for years. This one is a little improved in that it has heat vent holes under the arms. Otherwise (and except for the color) it is just like my green one.
These jackets are all I need about 80% of the time. When it gets colder, I just put a wool sweater or fleece jacket underneath and that does it. They are extremely well made and I fully expect years of service from my black one, just as I have had from my green one!"

A very good replacement,
April 21, 2012
By: jsdme

"My last Barbour Was brought 22 years ago and although looks good in it well worn look, reluctantly I felt it was time for a replacement.
My original jacket is no longer done so I opted for the Beaufort jacket, knowing Orvis and the excellent customer service I knew I'd be able to exchange if the size or style was not for me. I can say from the moment I opened the packaging I was happy. I've just been for a walk with the dog and the heavens opened, on arriving home I was sodden from the knees down but under the jacket perfectly dry.
A great jacket that I think will equally last the 22 years my last one did."

Resolution,
March 5, 2012
By: Jacketa
from Outdoor Colorado
"I hemmed and hawed and even tried a Bedale for a week, and in the end I traded it in for an ANSI Beaufort. For $20 more it is a MUCH better jacket. In size 46 it is 1 inch longer than a Bedale, but that inch is the difference between covering my sports coats and not. The game pocket is where I have stowed my hood, so it is now always with the jacket. The velcro instead of knit cuffs allow ventilation when it's warm. I also changed from the dark navy color to the standard sage. Why? Wore the navy Bedale one time at a local city college and discovered that dark navy is now the color of the gang-bangers (or, actually, the wanna be's). The only thing I don't like more is the tartan for the inner lining. Rather have the blue than the light green. I can cope tho... Mucho points to Orvis, for doing the swap without question. I choke on their prices, but I always come back."

Beaufort Jacket,

By: JSMD

"I purchased my Barbour Beaufort jacket over 10 years ago and I must say it is the most comfortable and versitale garment I own. I am an avid outdoorsman and travel extensively with my work. The coat always travels with me in the fall and winter months and has performed fabulously in town or in the field. I have yet to wear the coat without receiving compliments on its great looks.
Thank you Orvis!

Doesn't Get Any Better,
January 5, 2012
By: OldSchooler
"Without question, the Barbour Beaufort is one of the best jackets I’ve ever owned. It’s the first jacket I reach for when the weather turns a bit chilly or when it’s damp, raining or snowing. It’s warm, but not to the point of overheating. I travel quite a bit and when I do, it’s the only jacket I carry. This coat will carry you from early fall to late spring in good stead. My husband loves his Beaufort jacket, too. Additionally, Orvis offers a great reproofing service that I will take advantage of during the summer.
If you had to grab just one jacket, this would be it. Barbour quality + Orvis service – it doesn’t get better than that.

Great Jacket,
January 4, 2012
By: Winthrop
from Portsmouth NH
"My first Barbour - not oily as the older generation which I looked at years ago – rather a elegant patina and a material which softens after a few wears. I have a very dark blue model which is classy. I find it ideal as a sport jacket on daily/weekends or as a coat over a suit while travelling on business in Europe. I recommend the liner for NH or cold winters. In essence a great overall jacket! By the way, look at the US Barbour site – it seems they offer interesting tailoring such as leather at the cuffs etc… I may go this road next summer when I have the jacket re-waxed. I am 100% delighted with my choice (and Orvis service). Happy New Year!."

Good Jacket, Inferior Workmanship,
January 2, 2012
By: SteveninVirginia
from Alexandria, VA
"I've had a Barbour Cheviot since 2005, and I wear it frequently. It is well-insulated, it has lots of pockets (including well-placed hand warming pockets) and does a good job of blocking the wind. The reason I don't give it five stars is because I've had several occasions where stitching has ripped during normal use. Three pockets and the zipper. For a coat the price of which exceeds $400, you shouldn't have to have take it to the repair shop every year. Barbour will not stand behind their products - they will repair them for a price.
I've had North Face jackets that have stood up better under more extreme use."

A home run,
January 2, 2012
By: jasper2

"Against my better instincts of purchasing clothes as a gift, I gave my husband a Barbour Beaufort jacket for Christmas. His is unapologetic and difficult with clothes purchases. Frankly, it is rare to find a garment that meets with his approval. The Barbour jacket was a hit! He liked the length, color and detailing, not to mention the utility of the jacket."
