Bastian's Floating Caddis Emerger

The Floating Caddis Emerger has an overback strip of closed-cell foam. This is the solution for unexcelled floatation. Even if swamped in surface turbulence, the fly remains suspended in the film. The single wrap of mottled hen back feather at the head to achieve a variegated effect. It has been fished on New York's Beaverkill and Croton Rivers, the Madison and Ruby in Montana, Big Pine Creek, Penn's Creek, Spring Creek, all in Pennsylvania, and the Housatonic and Farmington Rivers in Connecticut. The Floating Caddis Emerger tempts trout to the surface and instills confident strikes even when there is no apparent hatch. Sizes 14, 16, 18.

Kick butt caddis emerger!,

"This fly has made me a legend amongst my hatchmatching buddies.
Works for every caddis hatch. Just vary the size and shade, and you're in business.
It should be illegal. Don't let your friends in on it until the hatch is over.
Out performs all other surface caddis patterns.

Best Caddis Emerger,

"This is a great caddis imitation. I've fished many caddis emerger patterns and this is by far the best. It will float forever in the surface film. It's a very sturdy tie and will hold up to many fish."

Excellent new pattern,

"Though I originally intended this fly to be used during caddis hatches on streams in Connecticut, I decided to try it on some selective trout on a pond in Vermont. Prior to tying this fly on, a variety of dries, nymphs and wets were used with limited success. Bastian's floating caddis emerger took fish consistently whether left in the film or retrieved using the hand twist method. This fly is one I will not be without."

Bastian's Floating Caddis Emerger,
June 12, 2013

"This season on Spring Creek in PA, I did very well on 4 outings fishing a tandem dry fly rig during the sulphur hatch. I used Bastian's Floating Caddis Emerger with a ginger body (to imitate sulphur nymphs), as the point fly, and I took 25% to 50% of my trout on that pattern. The top pattern was a sulphur dun, either a Parachute or Thorax Dun, about 12" apart. This pattern seems to serve double-duty as both a great caddis emerger AND a a mayfly emerger..
The sulphur dun helps to see and track the emerger, since I was fishing riffs and pocket water most of the time. I also fished this as my top fly in a tandem nymph rig, as an underwater emerger pattern...it also caught trout.

A great new caddis,

"I recently had the opportunity to fish the Missouri River near Craig, MT with Orvis Guide of the Year, Tim Linehan. One day we found ourselves in the middle of a nice caddis hatch and the fish seemed to be eating emergers. I happened to have a dozen "Bastian's Floating Caddis Emergers in my caddis box and they proved to be the ticket to numerous beautiful big Missouri trout. My "to do" list after the trip had "get more of Bastian's Caddis Emerger right away" to restock for our next trip. The fly floats beautifully and sure seems appetizing to trout!"

This one's a keeper!,

"I was fortunate to fish this fly with Don Bastian on Spring Creek in PA in 2006 during its development phase. Don caught plenty of trout that day and I caught my share too. What impressed me most was how easy it is to fish as the foam body is almost unsinkable and it's also easy to follow in the water. The overall durability of this fly is exceptional. And it duplicates emerger behavior accurately. Plus of course it catches fish!"
