Excellent versatile tool,

"I fly fish in the summer and float fish for steelhead in the winter. I bought this for fly fishing, but I use it more for steelheading. This is the perfect size to tuck into a chest pack. It is easy to store up to ten leaders. I cannot say enough good things about it. It is more than worth the price."

"if you tie a dropper fly from the back of a larger hook, you have to stretch your line a little to get em hooked right. i have used mine for 5 years and im going to buy two more. they are very handy if you break off in the middle of the river. i break some off in the day, re-tie em at night... a good rig."

At Last!,

"A really practical cast carrier. Arrived just in time for a sea trout week in Scotland. Saved so much time at night, changing tangled casts. Just cut off the old flies, chop up the nylon and on goes a new cast and flies. I have tried other bought and home made carriers but none match this system. Thank you Orvis, will order another."

"This is a good idea executed poorly. The box that holds the dropper rigs is very poor. The hinges are open, meaning, when you open the box lid to a certain point, it falls off. Not good while standing in a moving river. The dropper rig holders themselves are fine, but again, they are hard to get back into their slots, and fall out easily. Back to the drawing board on the box system."

"This is a great tool to take to the water. Saves time and effort by allowing you to put your flys together prior to going. Last time I went before I had this, I spent 1 1/2 hrs in the dark and cold trying to rig my rod. Great Product|!"

"I bought the Dropper Rig Fly Box to store various sets of dropper rigs for my Watershed Dropper Fly Box. I have dropper rigs that I use on Lakes, Ponds, and different Rivers, this box lets me tie them up all in advance and have them ready to place in my Watershed box depending on my location. The rig holder design keeps multiple rigs from getting tangled and/or kinking the tippet material. A real timesaver on the water and currently a great deal."

A very useful product,

"I find this design a vast improvement over the traditional circular 'cast carriers'. Using the Orvis 'rig box' delicate flies are not crushed and damaged as they are on circular carriers. In addition the design of box and carriers means it is easy to see the details of the leader. Each winding is a foot and as the turns of the leader lie neatly side by side on the carrier you can see the exact length, taper and composition of leaders easily. However, there is a price to be paid for this convenience. With two leaders per winder being the practical limit the box takes up more space than a traditional cast carrier. Also the turn at the end of each carrier is tight so that it kinks the leader more than a traditional cast carrier. It also holds less leaders. Although the 10 it does hold is usually enough I do end up also carrying a traditional cast carrier; I keep my most used rigs in this box and keep the traditional box for reserves. In the end none of these are really serious issues. Even though it is bigger than a traditional cast carrier the similarity to a fly box in shape and size means it is easier to handle and fits standard pockets well. The hinge is less than perfect but has never given me serious problems. The latch works well and although the box is not waterproof this seems uneccessary on a leader box and would just add size and weight. It is a bit unfortunate that there is some wasted space in the box. With just a little redesign it should be possible to get another carrier is a very similar sized box. A final niggle is that the carriers can be a bit fiddly to get out of the box. I've also no idea where the 14 labels enclosed with the box are supposed to go, but some way to easily label the carriers would be nice."

Great Concept and Time Saver,
September 20, 2008
By: Ziggy
"Nice setup but the box is not good for handling in a river. You drop it and it can be gone since the lid easily falls off and the inserts are not secure - they sit in the box loose. Would be more than excellent if the box was waterproof, the lid was more secure, the latch was more secure to lock it closed and the inserts snapped in so they don't fall out when the box is opened. Honestly it would not take too much to make this perfect. Time saver - absolutely unless you drop the box. Great Great concept and I do use it with a rubber band around the box. Even with the imperfect box - I would recommend this to anyone. One more thought - i put no more than 2 rigs per insert otherwise it can be confusing and get tangled."

"Nice time saver Great for winter steelhead. The idea is great. But Poorly designed. Box and Lid "just looks and feels cheap" lid falls off everytime afraid of losing it in the stream! For the Name and Price I expected MORE But I'd still recommend this item just watch the lid!"

good idea,

"Good idea-bad execution--recently recieved this product and it has a few basic problems-First the latch closure barely snaps shut, and is not secure, Dropping the box causes the lid to pop off and contents to spill- the inserts are great but anything more than two rigs per insert is an invitation to lots of time spent untangling. Additionally, they fit very loosely and are prone to falling out. The real mystery here is why there is not a closed hinge on the back of the lid. It is merely a half hinge that clips(supposedly) over a single pin---drop it or pull on it and it easily pops off. Lastly, because of the poor closure, it is not even close to being waterproof, so one drop in the water, and everything is wet. Overall, not a well thought out design."

"I purchased this item so I could spend more time fishing than rigging while out on the water and in this respect it works very, very well.
I do have three things that I noticed while using it that could be disastrous.
1. The inserts work very well in holding a rigged up leader and flies BUT they are very loose in the box and can easily be dumped in the water if you are not careful when handling. I notice this before going out to the river and I still dumped it but was lucky and I was on the bank so no loss down the river.
2. The hinges on the cover are such that the cover pops right off when least expecting it. This could really be bad if all the inserts were dumped out while you were grasping for the lid.
3. Most box vendors provide a place to attach some sort of swivel or line or something you can then tie off to your vest in case you drop it. This box does not come with anything like that all it has is a flimsy plastic eyelet that is probably intended for the store use to hang it in a display. I would encourage them to put some place to attach to in the next version.
Other than these things the box is very good at what it was designed to do."

Great Product,
October 4, 2007

"What is it used for?
The Orvis Dropper Rig Fly Box is one way to save time actually fly fishing instead of tying numerous knots while standing hip deep in water. I prepare dropper rigs before stepping into the water. The Orvis Dropper Rig Fly Box allows me to setup pre-tied dropper rings in the comfort of my home.
How durable is it?
The Orvis Dropper Rig Fly Box is made of semi-clear plastic similar to that of a Tupperware bowl. Unfortunately, it does not seal as well as a Tupperware bowl. It is not waterproof as I learned first hand but it should be able to withstand most of the punishment that a ordinary fly fisher can dish out. The five foam inserts do the job that was intended and should last an immeasurably amount of time.
Size and weight appropriate?
The size of the Orvis Dropper Rig Fly Box is 4" x 7¼" x 1¼". I found it to be a bit long when finding a place to put it in my vest or chest/fanny packs. The weight was never an issue but finding a pocket that you can easily locate the box may become frustrating. Take into consideration, that the reason you may purchase this fly box is to create dropper rigs that could be as long as 18+ inches folded up into a box 7¼ inches long. Then the size may be appropriate for your use.
How was the ease of use, functions, features?
I found the Orvis Dropper Rig Fly Box very easy to use. You can setup your dropper rigs in the comfort of your home the night before you go fishing. I was able to tie two and/or three different flies per dropper rig without any issues. You should be able to put up to two different dropper rigs on each foam insert and possibly more but I found it to be to cluttered with more than two. Once I have a situation on the river that I want to fish a dropper rig it was very simple to open up the box and identify the rig that I wanted, then detach from the foam insert and tie on the dropper rig. I save immeasurable amount of time setting up a three fly dropper rig the night before.
For whom would I recommend it?
I would recommend the Orvis Dropper Rig Fly Box to anyone who likes to save time while fishing. This fly box enables a fly fisher to prepare their dropper rigs ahead of time to allow for more fishing time. If you are the impatient type when you get out on the water this box may be for you. I would also recommend this box to anyone who enjoys fly fishing multiple flies: nymph and/or dry fly. If you know the area that you are fishing and have proven fly patterns specific to your area then this box may be your best bet. Also, if you have problems with your hands such as arthritis it may help you to tie your dropper rigs before you are on the water in order to enjoy your fishing trip.
Why did I choose it?
I chose it because I started to find that adding a nymph to my dry fly started to produce more takes. The only thing I did not like about creating dropper rigs was the time involved in tying them up. So, this box is the solution to saving me time and allowing me to enjoy fly fishing even more.
Pros?
Time Saver
Multiple dropper rigs
Durable Foam Inserts
Cons?
Not Waterproof
Length may cause storage problems
