Feel the fish,

"I have various weights of switch rods, this one is my lightest weight.
It is a pleasure to use for smaller fish and enable one to feel them while playing to the net.

"I purchases this rod for steelhead fishing and have not been disappointed . The rod is light in weight and has plenty of reach. It makes mending the line easy and has enough backbone to handle the largest of fish. The two handed casting opened a whole new dimension to my fishing. It is also a great rod when used with a switch line to throw large streamers on local lakes."

A great introduction to two hand rods,

"Disclosures first - this is the sixth Orvis rod in my collection and my third Access rod. You could call me an Orvis fanboy. So when I saw that this rod was on sale at an incredible price I simply had to jump at the chance to get into the two-handed game. Quality of this rod is equal to my other Access, in other words very high. The rod is also very light for it's overall size. I have it paired with an Orvis Battenkill Large Arbor 4 reel and the 5wt Access switch line. It seemed to be the simplest way to get started. Overall it's a great combo and I look forward to many hours on the water with it."

Great Rod,

"Great rod, have not used it yet, but I have the 7 wt access switch rod that I have used for 4 years. I plan on using the 5 wt for swinging streamers for trout at Lees Ferry in Arizona, and for nymphing on occasion. I use it with a Mirage III. Rod tube came damages, but they immediately sent a new one when I contacted them, at no charge!"

Sweet, affordable Switch rod,
October 21, 2014

"This is one sweet, handsome and affordable switch rod. The tip flex and medium-fast action is just right to power a high line speed and create nice looking loops. My first experience casting this rod was on a remote pond in Vermont. To get used to the feel of the long 11' - 5 wt. rod, I started out using it as a traditional one-piece rod. It cast Very smooth casting with weight forward Hydros 3D line (highly recommended); it has the feel of a smaller, lighter stream rod. Then I switched to casting as a spey rod. Within minutes, I was able to cast two-handed into headwinds with confidence and place a fly accurately at long distance. I started right-over-left and switched to left-over-right, and was even able to complete some decent Spey casts! This is a fun, powerful and very affordable switch rod, and it's made right here in Vermont. Casting this beauty is shoulder-saving for seniors and others switching to two-handed Spey casting, high-sticking and Czech nymphing. Nicely done, Orvis!"

Great performance overall,

"Took it up to st marys glacier lake to try out their dry fly action and not only was I able to get my fly out far from 7-10 ft from the bank but I was able to precisely put my fly wherever I wanted it to go no matter what direction I aimed. Great precision and distance I was able to get. Definitely a great rod."

Great Rod,
September 4, 2014
By: MIlemarker18

"Casts just like i hoped it would. Usually after a few hours my shoulder would like me know i'm getting old, but not with this rod. Smooth, and Solid. Bought the outfit, but had to send the line back as it kept sinking 15' from the tip. Upgraded the line and can't wait to take it out again.
One thing I didn't notice when purchased was it doesn't have a hook keeper. Not a deal breaker, but I walk a long ways to where I fish and it would be nice to have had one on it. I don't really want to hook the fly into the cork, or in one of the reel ports, but i guess I'll have to, or get an aftermarket one."

Most Excellent!,

from San Jose, CA
"It's time to get over the stigma that switch rods are only good for Steelhead and Salmon; this rod will allow you to "Access" (sorry for the pun) the entire trout river without sacrificing the feel and fun that a lightweight single-hand rod offers. This rod is ridiculously lightweight and has enough finesse to high-stick some nymphs or delicately place a dry fly on the surface and has enough power to bust a 60-foot cast to the other bank with ease and still have a 12-inch fish put a nice bend in the rod. The Hydros 3D switch line works great for standard trout nymph rigs and dry flies. Put a Mirage V large arbor on it (to accommodate the larger switch line) and the whole rig is unbelievably lightweight. You will have so much fun with this rod... I certainly do!"
