Orvis Super Magnifiers
You can't buy these special magnifying eye glasses in a department store. Most reading eye glasses give you a maximum magnification of 3X, but these optically correct magnifying glasses are stronger and the focal point is closer, exactly where you need it to be for tying flies or replacing tippets. Eye glasses come in 4X and 5X magnifications. Made in USA.

"I used the Orvis Super Magnifiers on four half day trout fishing trips. They were everything advertised: excellent magnification and clarity. That is, until half way through the fourth outing. When I pulled the glasses from the velcro pocket on my Orvis fishing vest one of the lenses fell out and was washed away to aid some vision challenged trout. For $59.00 I expected better, especially from Orvis. I should have purchased reading glasses from my pharmacy."

"I have the 4x and now the 5x. Has made my fly fishing and fly tying life so much easier. Vey difficult to find anything beyond 3x. Takes a little effort to get used to them but the reward justifies the effort.

"These are the best magnifying glasses ever for my 58-year-old eyes!
Couldn't do without them for fly tying and I love them on the stream for observing the naturals up close which helps me improve my fly patterns! The fit and style are great too! Thanks Orvis for another fantastic product!"

"Title to an old song, I know, but if you are not old, you do not need these. They perform as advertised.
1. They are higher mag than you can purchase at the store.
2. The depth of field is perfect for fly tying, it is right at mid chest level where it needs to be.

"I have a little bit of a prescription for driving, and a bit more for reading. The glasses I wear everyday are fine, but when I do something close and critical, like tying flies or reloading, these are perfect. I can work longer on my hobbies !

"I can now see much more detail when tying flies with the x5 magnification. The thick frames did not present any problems but half frames would have been better. One gripe is the arms are a bit tight around my head. Spring back hinges would have been better and offer more comfort."

"These glasses are exactly what I needed for on-stream leader to fly attachment. Even #22 flies are easy to see. I have tried magnifiers that attach to one's hat and hand held tweezer types both of which are awkward and inconvenient. These 5X reading type glasses hang on a lanyard around my neck and are quick and easy to use. The 4X version would probably do the job but I prefer the up-close short focal length of the 5X. They fit well and are nice looking too."

"I bought these glasses for two reasons-one is for fly fishing (tying knots, working with my flies, etc.) and second for reading. The glasses are well made and should last a long time. If you need these glasses for the reason I did, then they are a great buy from Orvis."

"The 5x readers are always with me on the river, at least since I turned 40, and I always keep a spare pair around. You can have all those weird knot-tying tools; these readers are all you need."

"I normally have reading glasses of +1.25, so I was unsure if +4 magnification glasses would be suitable for me. I have been amazed at how useful the glasses have been. Tying size 20 flies in low light conditions has become the simplest of tasks. The glasses are now indispensible and have been a brilliant purchase."

"I bought these 5X magnifiers to replace a pair of plastic 2.5X visor clip-ons that were okay, but never seemed to be in the correct position to be functional. I was using them on the stream to tie on tippets and flies. The nice thing about the Super Magnifiers is that they always located in the same place relative to my face. However, even at that, they took a little getting used to. The depth of field is quite short, maybe an inch. This means that if I am tying on a fly it needs to be consistently held about 6 inches from the lenses - any more or any less and the fly and line are way out of focus. It is even very difficult to find anything such as a spool of tippet or clippers while wearing these, thus requiring grabbing what is needed before donning the magnifiers. That said, they do indeed give a crystal clear, substantially magnified view of the those tiny eyelets. I have practiced with these a fair amount at home, but have not yet used them on the stream. I will probably wear them around my neck, use my polarized bifocals to tie on tippet, and then switch to the magnifiers to trim the tag ends and to tie on small flies."

"First thing I have ever sent back to Orvis. Was hoping this would be better athan the very inexpensive reading glasses I bought from the Chemists. They cerainly weren't. I want a pair for reading my iPhone in bed! The quality of the optics was really poor with a very blurred image at any distance of focus. They were equally poor for tieing flies onto my leader. Sorry!"
