"The pocket transit is very accurate. I triangulated my location, using it tripod mounted, sighting on peaks that were miles away. The locating worked out to within feet on the map of where I was actually standing. That said, it is not a lightweight hiking/orienteering compass. Not something to slip in your shirt pocket. It also is direct reading and can be confusing when compared to an ordinary compass. The uninformed user can become very accurately lost. It is so very sensitive that ferrous metal within 12" can affect the reading. It is a great quality engineering/surveying investment for the curious or the amateur, but know what you are buying before spending the $."
