Black Sheep Irish Fisherman Sweater
We took the naturally, undyed brownish-grey colour of black sheep wool and combined it with a bit of white wool to get this distinctive, heathered colour. This is a traditional cable-knit crewneck sweater that is a classic of Irish style and culture. Slip it over a collared shirt for a casual look and to take off the chill. In brown/grey. Pure wool. Hand wash or dry clean. Ireland. Sizes: S(34-36), M(38-40), L(42-44), XL(46-48), XXL(50-52).

"The ship date was ultra-pessimstic quoted September, arrived March. Based on previous reviews, quite looking forward to a smelly sweater but alas not to be. Neither was it baggy - a snug fit that has not loosened with wear. It is very warm and the 'black sheep' natural colouring very attractive. Clearly a make-over since the early reviews and extremely good value for the quality. Looks good with jeans."

"This sweater has a lovely traditional cable-knit design which would have taken me months to knit! The fit is good, and the only doubt I have about it is that the pattern produces slight holes in the fabric - we've yet to discover whether this lets the wind whistle through..."

"Well made and looks great. The color is very unique. It's a little scratchy, but, c'mon, you're buying a wool fisherman's sweater not silk pajamas---what did you expect? And, it smells just like a sheep, which is awesome because you know that some of the natural oils in the wool have been preserved, making it semi-water resistant."

"we liked the appearance of this sweater -it was a perfect fit for my husband but a few days later with normal wear it had stretched beyond recognition ! it had dropped about 6inches in length and the sleeves are now baggy - not the quality we expect from Orvis -please send a prepaid label so that we can return asap for a full refund...."

"This sweater caught my eye in one of the Fall catalogs, but its price was a bit too high despite the great appearance and quality of its construction. A few weeks later, Orvis sent me a coupon discount that brought the price within range of my inclinations at just the time when the temperatures dropped markedly. So, I placed the order and when the sweater arrived it surpassed my expectations for warmth and character, and both its construction and appearance matched my expectations completely."

"I have tried various Orvis products over the years because they look as though they would suit me. Unfortunately everything is either too big, an odd shape or very expensive for something marketed as traditional but made in some far eastern sweatshop. This jumper is the first thing I have bought that looks like the photograph, fits properly and is a reasonable price."

"This is my first Irish Fishermans Sweater from Orvis. Since my natural colored one I ordered direct from Ireland is very large for its size, and because of Orvis' statement that they run large, I ordered a size smaller than my usual size.
It looks and fits great. The pattern is very deep. It is warm and comfortable.
I'll order one in natural when Orvis has one on sale."

"Having reached the view that a prize from Orvis in its "lucky draw for reviews submitted" was illusory, I'd given up writing reviews.
However this sweater is so good it's worth the effort.
I wore it on the first day snow reached central Edinburgh and it was extremely warm. More than this, it felt soft and comfortable with the deep brown/grey colour looking great.
Undoubtedly this has been one of my best purchases from Orvis and, although expensive, the sweater is worth every penny !!"

"Easily my best sweater purchase. Ever. The quality of this sweater is very uncommon for the price. It looks great, fits great and is very warm.
After some weight loss I easily wear a large now with XL clothing being just a bit too big. I bought this sweater in a large and it layers over a mock turtleneck perfectly. I'm 6', 196 lbs. and have no problems with the sleeve or the sweater length.
This was a very good purchase and I highly recommend this sweater. Another reviewer commented on the smell. Mine did indeed smell like straw and, to some extent, sheep! Not a problem though as I am sure it is just from being new. This sweater is the real deal."

"Remember those itchy wool clothes you had to wear in winter when you were a kid? The good news is now you don't have to as an adult. This sweater has a beautiful stitch and is true to fit on the plus side. It might work if you wear a turtleneck under it - but in CA we just need one extra layer sometimes."
