Access 12-weight 9' Fly Rod—Tip Flex

5 oz. 9', 4-piece, Tip-Flex Fly Rod for 12-wt. line.Tarpon rods have to handle one of the most powerful fish in the ocean. Up until now they have been expensive. Not anymore. This is the highest performance, lowest priced tarpon rod on the market and there is not another rod out there that can touch this combination. If you're looking for a high-performance tarpon rod, but don't want to break the bank to get it, the Access 912-4 is the rod you want. This rod can do anything rods twice its price can do and what's more, amazingly enough, it's lighter than any of them.

Great Blank, but...,
September 26, 2011

"I purchased the Access 12 wt specifically to target Sharks in Louisiana and Tarpon in Flordia/Texas. I've only used the rod once for a Tarpon trip in South Padre Island.
Blind casting the jetties all day can get tiring, but the Access 12 didn't completely destroy my arm. It was actually bearable. The blank itself is a great piece of gear. I can repeatedly bury the hook in a Tarpon and not worry about breaking the rod.
My only complaint, however, is with the cork handle. Specifically the fighting butt. With the Orvis Mirage VII, the tiny 1" fighting butt is HORRIBLE. It's simply not long enough to get any leverage. Once buried in your stomach, you can't crank the reel without interference from your body if you're rod is in the water.
At long distances, it was decent. But once the fish get's close to the boat, or dives, you literally can't reel without hitting your stomach. It needs to be longer. Also, once I got off the water, i untightened the reel seat and the ENTIRE REEL SEAT fell off. Thank goodness this happened on the last day of the trip.
I plan to repair the reel seat and butt myself, and will be installing a better butt. This one stinks. Other than that, the ROD BLANK is amazing. For the price, it can't be beat. But please, Orvis, fix this useless fighting butt."
