Good Product,

"This is a great way to have easy access to your net. The magnet is very strong and is well-built. The coil design keeps a lot of the cord out of the way compared to a straight bungee-style cord. A quick jerk disengages the magnet and getting the two magnets in the general vicinity of one another will quickly engage the magnets. However, there are two things that need to change to make this a product I would like a lot more:
1. Cord length. In its current state, the cord is too short. It would be great if Orvis would add about two more feet to the length.
2. Price. This thing is waaaay more expensive than I feel it really should be. If Orvis could get it down to the $19 range, I would be more than happy to recommend this product to my friends."

Better, with a slight modification,

"I have used this magnetic holder for many years, and consider it “near” ideal. However, at first use this season it failed to release and snapped the plastic buckle from my vest. Users should be aware that minor maintenance is required, because the magnet surfaces tend to oxidize a little (when the net end becomes wetted and stored for the season), which may cause the magnets to “stick”. This can be remedied with a few passes of a small wire brush (Dremel tool is perfect) or super fine emery cloth. Then, apply a thin layer of silicone grease (not spray silicone) to the magnets. This not only inhibits future oxidation, but makes release smoother and easier. I suggest that the manufacturer add a thin, permanent coating to the magnets, which would accomplish these aims “out of the box.” If nothing else, yank the magnets apart using two hands at the beginning of each season, rather than at "first catch.""

Magnetic Magic,

"Having tried another manufacturers magnetic holder which failed first time of use, i had no such problems with the Orvis type. The magnet is strong and attached very easily due to the tapered lead on the magnets themselves. Orvis have even made the attachment loops non magnetic which although is sound design its competitors have not quite worked this one out!! When coupled with the Orvis hand net which was purchased as a gift by my brother witth the engraving a very sound and qulaity combination. I would highly recommend both of these products to any aspiring river fisherman"

works as advertised,

"Went fishing today without a net because I have a sling pack and could not decide how to attach a net.
Caught a big rainbow and tried to land it with my hand, fish rolled out of my hand and broke my leader.
Went to my local Orvis store and the manager suggested a net and this magnetic holder.
He told me to attach it to the d ring on the front and when the sling is pulled to my back the net lays right at my side out of the way but ready to use.
Excellent product, and great advise from the Orvis pro.

never made it to the water,

"Purchased the net magnetic net holder on 12/29/11 - yep, today. The strength of the magnet is great but the welded plastic loop around the ring separated with a pull of less force than to pull the magnets apart...very disheartening. Also, irritating that the price in the store is $29.95 and the price online is $24.95...would not recommend and will not replace."

Better In Your Hands, than a picture,

"Like many others, I was just a tad skeptical about this product. Being an I.T. person, only makes me more suspicious about anything magnetic. Happily, its quite good for its designed purpose. The magnet's strong enough to hold your net securely; yet gentle enough, to come easily away when you grabbing it to land that fish. What more could I ask for?"

It has happened before,
September 6, 2011
By: cjm037
"As with another reviewer I lost my net. Stepping into a river the net was caught by the flow and that was the last I saw of it. It extended on the plastic coil and just kept going - right off the end and into deep water. I informed Orvis UK and was told they would replace my net. Imagine my disappointment to receive a new lanyard. If they think I am going to risk another net they have another think coming. It is a good design and the magnets work well but it is let down by the quality of the welds at the coil ends."

"I've had a chance to use this product once since I got it. It holds your net in place and lets you easily reach your net when you need it. I am skeptical of the welded plastic coils, though. If they ever fail, there goes another expensive net."

Lanyard Failure Lost $140 Brodin Net & a 24" BOW!,
July 9, 2011
By: Ralph123456789
from Colorado
"I will not use the words that come to mind to describe the poor quality of the net retaining lanyard connection to the split ring. Plastic welds have absolutely NO Place as a "safety strap" for the net. Here's the story...
This Father's Day, my children bought me a Brodin Pere Marqette Ghost net. UNFORTUNATELY, I carried it with this Orvis Magnetic holder. I was battling a 24 inch rainbow in heavy water. After 5 minutes and 6 jumps, he came to my feet and I retracted the net. Then the fish made another run and I dropped the net. The Lanyard weld failed and the net went bye bye!!! Also, the fish hung me up in some branches so I lost both the net and the fish. Orvis... You can do better!!!!"

Surprisingly Good,

"I purchased this holder along with the Classic Landing net, and to be frank was skeptical about it. My local Orvis store manager, Jason, is fantastic and said give it a try and if you're at all disappointed bring it back. Needless to say I wasn't. The magnets are strong and connect snugly. The set up is really quick and convenient to use during the most exciting moments of the catch. Very happy with the purchase."
