Surprisingly good boot !!!,
June 6, 2012
By: dswits
"I recently purchased the River Guard EcoTraX boot. I struggled with this decision for a bit but in the end pulled the trigger on this boot.
I have fished these boots for about one month and find them equal to or better than felt. I found the grip on rocks and slimy rocks to be very, very good. They are incredibly light weight as advertised. The studs are great providing the extra grip on rocks and slim. They seem to be well thought out in their placement and for those who feel they spook the fish I watched trout in clear water stay put, not moving when walking on rocks nearby. Just watch out for the diner floor when you go for breakfast. :-)
One benefit some may not consider about is grip on the ground. I hike into some pretty remote areas, especially steep areas where felt bottoms have been a little dangerous on the slippery pine needles, loose sand, and mud paths. As you can imagine, the Vibram sole is far better than felt on this type of terrain.
- I am not looking back on my decision and absolutely love ‘em"

Best Boot Ever,
May 7, 2013
By: MoFisher
"I tried several boots over the last couple of years including Orvis Regular River Guards, LL Beans Grey Ghost, etc., but this Ultralight boot wih th eco Trax soles & studs is amazing. The best feature is it is light weight. All of the others felt like bricks. It also has a very sturdy and comfortable "hiking boot profile"....makes walking under water and over slick rocks very solid. So far...no signs of unusual wear. Laces are fast and secure and with my waders built in rock guards I can comfortably keep them clean... Last but not least the boots look good.. Bottomlline is that these boots are winners."

"After 20 days on the water i can safely say that the usefull life my river guard ultralight is coming to an abrupt end.
Almost all stitches show considerable wear, the one on the rubber band being partialy gone. The rubber itself is cracked at the base of the shoes. The soles will look like a race car tires at some point in a near future.
I like to walk and explore river. My 80$ major brand hiking boot have more than 100 miles on them and still going strong. Paying a premium price was supossed to give me Quality gear that last. My level of disapointement is hard to put into words....."

Wading boots that will outlast my feet,
April 11, 2013
By: Turtle620

"I already have a pair of the River Guard boots that I have been using for 2 years. This was my first wading boot with the rubber soles, and I had my concerns. However after using them a couple of times, I understand how they are different than the felt soles, and made adjustments. Now I am just as secure with the rubber soles as I was with the felt. This is the second pair I am keeping for the future. I am concerned the River Guard's will be replaced with a boot I won't like."

Good but not so durable,
April 10, 2013
By: Thymallusbum

"These are the most comfortable wading boots I've ever had & they are easy to clean/disinfect to avoid unwanted transfer of alien organisms (very important on my recent trip to New Zealand).
The studded soles provide excellent grip in all conditions (algae covered rocks, snow & ice, steep muddy banks. They are great for long walk-ins to distant fisheries, away from the beaten track.
Their only draw-back is that I've had 2 pairs in 2 years, both of which have suffered from the sole separating from the uppers. All credit to Orvis for their service. The first pair which had had heavy use were replaced at half cost & the recent pair with much less use were replaced free of charge. A friend has also had the same problem & same free replacement.
Other than this problem they have been 5 star.

Solid build, lightweight-Ally on the water,
April 8, 2013
By: WriteFlyGuy
from Reno, NV
"The Ultralight is the best wading boot I've come across in 25 years of fly fishing. I started out with the Clearwater felt, gave into to the Eco movement and tried another brand only to find the competition's boots to be narrow and untrustworthy. This boot feels like a hiking boot, and runs large, accommodating my wide foot and offering plenty of room for wader booty. Traction is superior as well with ExcoTrax soles complete with studs to help grip rocky waters like the Shoshone or the Truckee."

Comfy boots,

"I recently purchased a pair of River Gaurd Boots and I absolutely love them! They are so comfortable and light . Had a pair of felt boots and I have to say I get better traction with these shoes, and are easy to clean. I would recommend that one purchase "Shoe in over boot stud covers", to protect your studs as well as your kitchen linoleum. GREAT BOOTS, ORVIS!"

"One of my fishing buddies got these boots as a gift and loved them. I knew I had to get them and try them myself. They exceeded my expectations. Putting them on is a breeze, they are comfortable, wear well, and are super easy to clean. The grip and traction is also great. I think it's better than the felt boots I used to wear. Great product Orvis! Highly recommended!"

"These boots are everything I was looking for and more. They are comfortable all day and stick to the river floor like glue. They look good and are light weight. After half a dozen all day trips these boots are barely beginning to get worn. I can't think of any down side to these boots. I consider the boots to be expensive however they are worth every penny."

Sole Came Off,
January 16, 2013
By: ArkRiverFisher
from Denver, CO
"(This is my second submission of this review. The first submission "disappeared" after a few days.)
After about 75 days on the water in 2012, the sole on one boot came two thirds off. That should not happen on boots that cost $195. In the past I used Simms boots and got approx. 150 days of use. I now own a new pair of Simms.

River Guard Boots,
December 28, 2012
By: Trout57
from Pa
"These boots are oversized. I wear an 11 shoe so I got size 11 boot. I need to pull the laces very tight to keep my foot from moving up and down when I walk. The entire boot is very stiff and looks like it will take some time to break in. Out of the package there was one lug with the head stripped so the wrench provided could not remove this lug. You get 2 spares so you’re covered for this defect. Just not what I expected from an Orvis high end boot. Note that I have not worn them in a stream only around the house to test for fit."

Excellent and Comfortable,
December 15, 2012
By: WYPA
"I bought a pair for myself and have fished 4 times with my new wading boot. I like them so much I just purchased a pair as a gift for my son. They are very light weight but provide excellent traction and stability in the rocky freestone stream I fish regularly. They seen easier to slip on and off then previous boots that I have used. I followed the sizing guidelines and bought my shoe size = perfect fit with neoprene foot waders."
