Improved,
May 14, 2013

"First off, I'm a third generation Gokey wearer. This would be my fourth style and I like the oxford chukka very much. My size is a 12.5 D so I ordered a 13 D as always because Gokey's can shrink a bit and form due to the construction. I know there are some purist out there who swear by the old gro cord sole, but that is foolishness IMHO as that sole was rock hard and unforgiving to your foot. The new softer sole makes the shoes far more comfortable and functional in terms of really wearing them for extended periods."

Fantastic...but wrong sizing...,
March 27, 2013
By: Mouching

"Those shoes are fantastic, the leather is one of the best, the Vibram sole is great and the handcraft is amazing...but the size is not right !
I am 10,5 D and the ones i have ordered are... too big. although they are the right width... I should have got a 10 E....
My advise : do not buy without trying them on.

great purchase,

"I received my Hikers just before a business trip to Europe. I knew I would be walking a lot and gave the Hikers a good test. Breakin was minimal. I ordered one width larger based on earlier reviews. They fit well, kept my feet dry in snow and slush. I intend to buy a pair of oxfords in the spring."

Darn good outdoor shoe,
December 24, 2012

"I have lived on my farm since 1979. Bought a pair od hikers about 25 years ago and still wear them. They hold up because I guess they are made well for outdoor work and play. Hiking is much safer with a well made boot. Most off pavement stuff I do is wearing my hikers. Afer moving to town I have worn down the soles and heals a bit and plan to send them in this spring for replacement but would hate to part from them in winter!"

The Best !,
October 12, 2012
By: Snakeman

"I like to wait a while to write a review so I can test the item. I have now owned my Gokey Hikers almost two years and I wear them 3-4 days per week. They have been wet, muddy, hiked in, walked in ....well you get the picture. They still look brand new and show no wear. My feet stay dry and comfortable regardless of weather or where I wear them. Gokeys have all the essentials, style, comfort, superb construction and value. I'm quite sure my Gokeys will last longer than me. I'm sorry I waited so long to purchase a pair."

Daily Double,
July 21, 2012
By: Scooter375
from South Windsor, CT
"I have been a customer for over 20 years and enjoy every purchase. A couple years ago, I bought a pair of the low cut Gokey Sauvage. They are very comfortable, great and rugged to walk in and you can just simply rub out any scuffs or scratches. So just bought this pair of the Hikers and think they are as terrific as the first pair of oxfords. I'm confident these will get the same compliments I've gotten along the way with the oxfords. After wearing a few times, they simply form comfortably to you foot. So with two pair now, there will be a "daily double" when out and about, and enjoyment for years to come. Wish I had some grandkids to pass them down to as I'm sure they will out last me. Thanks Orvis."

Excellent boots on sale,
July 10, 2012
By: Rhino88

"Bought on sale as they had it in EE - my width. Nice fit for a mid-weight boot. I have several pairs of Gokey's and this was up to their usual very high standards. Won't wear until this fall but look forward to breaking them in then."

Serious boot,
May 7, 2012
By: Brave
"I have desired this boot for some time and acted when it was on sale in my size with free shipping. Previous reviews said they are made narrow so the EE width was a gamble that paid off as they fit my normal D width feet.
Their advantage is that the very thick leather will mold to the foot making them a quasi-custom boot especially when used with an orthodic. The flat foot-bed felt of little bumps that would be impossible without a stiff interface. In these days wherein every cheap shoe has a molded insert with some arch support the lack thereof is a careless design error.
They remind me with their feel and smell of a wonderful fielder's mitt I had many years ago."

Best casual shoes made!,
April 30, 2012
By: stretch991
from Alberta Canada
"No one product is perfect for everbody, but to my tastes my Gokey Sauvages are the ultimate shoe. They are durable, the bullhide leather is top quality and cleans up easily to look like new with a shot of mink oil. They are comfortable, the true mocassin construction molds to your foot for great comfort. They are great looking in a world of day-glow running shoes. I'm not sure why I have 6 pair, I guess I am just scared I'll wake up one day and find out they are no longer made. Do yourself a favor and order a pair!"

Long time good,
December 27, 2011

"I was given a pair of Gokey snakeproof sauvage hikers for my sixteenth birthday, in 1967. Forty four years later, I'm still wearing them. I wear them on construction sites, while operating heavy equipment, and hunting upland game. The leather is strong enough to give very good protection. They fit so well that they don't need thick cushiony midsoles to be comfortable.
I have carried a pack while wearing them, and they're okay for canoe portages up to a mile or so, not so good for steeper ground. While in college I would occasionally wear them while teaching rock climbing, and they were not much good for that.
If the new ones last as well as the old ones, this is the equivalent of buying Michelin tires for your car: most expensive purchase price, cheapest per mile when all is said and done.
I sent mine back to be rebuilt when they were 25+ years old, and were no longer waterproof. This was in the last days of Gokey in Minnesota, and they did a very poor job with them.

Best Boots I've owned,
August 22, 2011
By: Ronron
"I"ve been wearing these boots since 1981, and they're the only shoes/boots I wear, aside from sandals and tennis shoes. Couple these with a pair of wigwam merino hikers, and there's nothing better on or for your feet. Now, they are not the best boots for hiking, so if you want to hike, there are boots that are more suitable."

"Okay, I admit I lean more toward Italian loafers than something with which I could scale a mountain. In this case i was looking for a stylish bridge between style and something I could wear while tromping over and through midwestern moguls. This is definitely that hiker. The pictures do not do them justice. This is a very attractive and comfortable two-tone hiker made from the same leather as my snakeproof boots. These hikers, like most of my Orvis footwear, fall into the category that I like to call "legacy footwear" meaning that I will wear out long before the boots will so be prepared to pass them down to future generations. Yes, they are heavy, but that is a small concession for the comfort and style. Like others, I recommend ordering a size wider. Add a little leather conditioner to keep the leather happy and you will have a lifelong friend for your feet."
