Does your Dog Like Beads?,
April 26, 2013
By: vvanvlym
"I ordered this bed because of a referral and because of statements that stated this was their dogs favorite bed. Well, my dog does not like the sound or feel of this bed. You can imagine if you laid down on a bean bag, all the beads shift to where the weight is'nt. It makes that area hard and firm. I am wanting to trade this bed in for a soft comfy bed that my dog will use."

Dog Bed,

"My dog is 81 pounds so I purchased a large dog bed. She disappears in it! So if you are buying a Dog's Nest, pick a smaller size than indicated in the chart. A definite good point is that my Doberman took to the bed immediately."

no beans,

"We had a poly "fill" bed - and based on the comments decided to try the beads. We had a large for two small beagles - they slept on it all the time.
Tried the extra large to give them more room with beads. I've take beads out twice - still too many. The dogs will not lay on it. They lay near it, in front of it - but won't get on it. They hate it. Can't get comfortable.
The material has also changed - now more "velvet" in texture - preferred the canvass kind of texture on our first bed.
I guess I have to reorder and hope they will like one more like their old one."

The Best Dog Bed Ever,
July 23, 2012
By: rsg444
from New York, NY
"We bought our first Orvis dog bed when we got our greyhound over 5 years ago. We replaced the filling once during those 5 years. We decided to replace the old bed with a new one, mainly because the old one was rather faded--not in any least bit that it was at all worn out because it wasn't. Now, he still has two beds, and probably will for a while. We've bought these for our other dogs and cats as well and they all love them. We do too."

My dog HATES this!,
May 18, 2012
By: LaurieM

"This bed was recommended in the Retired Racing Greyhound for Dummies book so we bought it. It has entirely too many beads in it. My husband opened it up and discarded quite a few, twice already. Our greyhound can't get comfortable no matter how hard he tries. I will say that they cover is quality and if your dog is a digger, then this would be perfect."

Lovely bed but not for every dog,
March 8, 2012
By: Dogpamperer

"I really liked this bed; it was extremely well-made and attractive. I thought my dog would love the beads and they would prevent the bed from getting too flat but, unfortunately, she just did not like it. I'm not sure if she was put off by the noise it made or the fact that it shifted a bit when she moved. I'm sure this is just a matter of personal preference, not anything wrong with the bed. I exchanged it for a different Orvis style and filling (the futon), which my dog and I agree is just perfect."

"I bought 2 of these dog nests with polystyrene beads about 3 years ago. At the time, many reviewers complained about the noise the beds made when their dog moved on the bed; I dismissed it at the time of my purchase; but, would totally agree. The noise would wake me up; so, I moved the Orvis bed to a different room. I'm writing now because after 3 years; my dog beds went from being very plump; my dog barely made a dent when she laid on them; to being deflated...very surprising and disappointing. I can step on the bed and feel the ground below...I didn't expect to replace the inside filler pillow ever...let alone after 3 years. I have a 13 lb Boston Terrier that uses the beds at times...but, prefers my sofa or bed...Ultimately, in hindsight, would I invest in these beds - NO They are noisy...and, now basically deflated pillows on my floor. See the picture of Boo and her deflated beds; the tan one is the worst."

dogs love them but noisy!,
January 3, 2012
By: tuckerandneko
"We have 3 of these beds. The dogs love them. They dig and make a nest and will choose to sleep in these beds instead of all other options. They look good..cover is well constructed. One of our dogs chewed one of the zippers and beads scattered all over the house. The inner liner is very thin.
The only big negative is that the beads are super noisy. We had to move them from our bedroom...we were woken up each time one of the dogs shifted in the beds...

"A number of years ago we purchased two of the Large Round Dog Beds with Beads for our two Goldens Samson and Carmel. They have both left us but the current three Goldens still love the beds! When we brought our puppy home this summer I also discovered the bead bags could be put into the front loading washing machine and washed on gentle and cool water - thus solving the occasional puppy house training problem! Love these beds and now will be getting one for the newly remodeled living room so they have a spot of comfort out there (current beds are in our bedroom!), Just need one that will look good in our Log/stucco room!"

Only dog bed I'd buy,
December 28, 2011
By: Scoutwise
"Great bed, now he chooses this one over the kid's bean bag chairs!
Even though is a large Brittany (50-55 pounds), I got him the medium size round, rather than the large. It doesn't seem too small, as he circles before he lays down."

Not a fan,
November 6, 2011
By: 2Greyhounds

"I was very disappointed in this bed. My dog is a real scratcher so I thought he would love it, and several other greyhound owners recommended it. Unfortunately it did not work out for us. First of all, the dog was lukewarm about it at best- he seemed nervous about the noise and the waterbed effect when he walked on it. Then, I started feeling beads right below the surface and discovered that the liner had ripped after only a couple of weeks. Orvis offered to send me a new liner but I think I'll just return it- not worth the hassle."

Dogs only? Think outside the box!,

"I purchased a small beanbag 'dogs nest' for my sailboat about 6-7 years ago. It's perfect for stuffing into odd corners in the cockpit or on deck for a comfortable 'bean bag' seat without the bulk of a human size bean bag.
My (original) dogs nest was covered in a heavy canvas like material. After years being completely ignored until I needed it, subjected to rain, salt spray, tropical sun, etc. it's only now finally needing to be replaced."

Wonderful bed for greyhounds!,
October 10, 2011
By: greyhoundgirl1

"My greyhound Sophie absolutely loves this bed! When it first arrived, it was a bit too firm for her taste, so I removed some beads. Actually I removed some three different times, and after that it was perfect for her. After a number of months of her contented use, I did replace some of the beads I had taken out at first. This is a perfect bed for "diggers". She digs and digs, and when it is just right, she plops down and sleeps for hours. I would highly recommend the dog nest with bead filling for greyhounds and other dogs that like to dig."

"I bought 2 of these beds over 10 years ago and had them personalized for my CATS! Back then, Orvis offered a cover that had pictures of cats on it so I bought that one and another pattern also. My cats absolutely LOVE the beds especially in winter. The plastic beads make a little noise when the cats get on the bed but it doesn't seem to bother them (or me)! If the beds pass the scrutiny of my cats, I know any dog will love the bed, too!"

Beds, beds, beds,
July 17, 2011
By: cjbm
"Just bought another one of these. Some thoughts, some of which are common with other reviewers:
+ most comfortable bed ever - our dogs have both slept on these since they were puppies, and our oldest, now 14, is on her fourth or fifth.
- new covers are this synthetic stuff that looks like rec room upholstery, but it does wear better than our much loved canvas covers (we are replacing the last of the canvas, which is worn out).
+ new covers are no fun to chew, as our "baby" found out - she chewed holes in two canvas covers while in her puppy year.
++ round nest is absolutely best design for retrievers (most comfortable).
Some complain about beads falling out, but the new covers (and maybe improvements to the liners?) have made this a non-issue (and Orvis stood behind the product when we had one liner fail, years ago).
Overall, a great product - our dogs endorse them!

"I ordered this bed because my beagle likes to dig and create a comfortable nest before lying down, and this bed is advertised as perfect for the "nester". The beads, however, just bunch up into a hard formation that doesn't invite nesting at all. My dog didn't like it from the start. I coaxed him onto it several times, and he got off immediately. I then removed some of the beads, thinking that would enable him to dig and sink down into the bed, but that didn't work either. The bed is attractive; I especially liked the tattersall cover. But I don't have to sleep in it. So I returned it thanks to Orvis' great return policy. Sorry it didn't work out."

Does Amy Love this Bed or What?,

"This bed is perfect for dogs who like to scrunch up their bedding to make the perfect little nest. My greyhound has used hers for years, and I am about to treat her with a new one. Have also bought refill beads, although the last purchase made it a little too firm for her liking. So she let my other dog flatten it out until it was more to her liking."

"Sunny, our very light yellow lab, had the large bead-filled dog nest in canvas red tartan for about five years. He loved it, but it finally wore out. We decided to get a new one in the green tartan. When it came, the fabric was much darker than the picture showed (I believe because of the change to microfiber fabric), and the microfiber fabric has a nap that grabs onto dog hair like a lint brush. Otherwise it is a great bed. Would it be possible for Orvis to continue offering a choice for customers that prefer canvas? The canvas didn't show the hair nearly as much."

"I recently purchased the round fleece replacement cover for an older dog bed that just needed a new cover. Both dogs really love the bed so I decided to get another complete bed with the same cover. The cover is great but the older dog will not use the bed. This is a dog that loves dog beds but he will not use this one. He does not like the bead filler. He stands there looking pathetic if the other dog is in the older bed. I should have gone with the polyester fill not the beads. I don't think he likes how the beads shift or the sound that they make. Both dogs now fight over the original bed"
Response from Orvis:By Orvis Service TeamJanuary 18, 2011
Orvis Customer Care contacted this customer to express regret that the pets have to fight over the dog bed! We gladly offered to exchange the bead liner for the polyfill so both pets can have Orvis beds to use!
