Ephemerella subvaria is the genus most often referred to as the Dark Hendrickson. These are prolific mayflies that are generally recognized as the first large mayfly hatch on eastern rivers. This dark Hendrickson fly pattern has been around for years and is a standard during this early spring hatch. Color, Natural. Fly in sizes: 12, 14, 16.

"Haven't found a better dry fly for the Neversink River. Would be nice if all flies lacked head cement in the eye though."
"Don't let anyone tell you that you can only use this in the spring during a Hendrickson hatch. I use this all year with fantastic success. I used this as well in Montana this summer and my guide raised his eyebrows but I caught several brook trout and now he is a believer. One of my all time favorites, a Catskill legend!!"
