2 1/2 oz. 9', 4-piece, Mid-Flex fly fishing rod for 6-wt. line.We set out on an adventure to make the world's lightest fly fishing rod. Along the way, we also made the world's best. While dry flies are the consummate way to catch trout, we often need to go deep with weight and bigger flies to catch trout. The new patent pending Helios 9-foot 6-weight gives you the strength and length to properly cast, mend and drift heavy nymphs and streamers, but because of the remarkable Helios technology eliminates the compromise in dry fly fishing. This rod will do both beautifully and is the perfect rod for big rivers and streams where a variety of techniques are necessary. If ever there was a perfect rod for fishing a dry with a dropper, the Helios 906 is it. Precise casts even at distance and the ability to reach out and control your line for perfect drifts. The remarkable light weight and responsiveness still gives you the tippet protection and the joy of feeling the fish in the fight. This is a big water trout rod taken to a level never before realized.

The Perfect Rod!,
March 3, 2010

"The best rod money can buy, without question.
I was and still am amazed with my T3. The Helios though, is lighter, more powerful, accurate and casts further. The moment you touch one of these rods you'll understand rod perfection.
See roytroutbum's review of this rod I agree with everything he says, it looks and feels gorgeous, such a joy to use that you won't want to stop fishing, and you will love this rod more than anything you've ever known. I am biased of course, I love the quality and feel of Orvis gear but, if you only ever buy one rod make it one of these you will not regret it."

"When I went to down to the Isar river in Munich, Germany with my brand new ZG Helios 906-4 mid I decided to try dry flies even though I hardly saw fish feeding at the surface. With my very first cast with the new rod I cought a rainbow with about 55cm (some 21 inches - carefully released). I found that awesome since I hadn't much time to get used to the new rod except the time I spent with it at the store where I bought it - and in the park... The trouts at that particular spot tend to be picky, the water was clear and the surface was calm. The cast obviously was good enough... I spent the whole day out at the stream and there was no sign of fatigue. I casted farer then before and tried nymphing and streamer-fishing, too - all just beautifully easy with this peace of equipment."

"Who needs an 8 wt rod. This baby handled Salmon up to 25 lb without problems on my recent trip to SE Alaska. Best part is it's so light your arm will never tire of casting."

"When I got this rod for a fly fishing trip to Montana and I loved it! While some Orvis rods are bad at shaking out slack, this one is very good at it. Not to mention this thing has no weight to it at all. It is super light, and it is tough. It is also good for when you will be hiking into fishing areas. If you are looking for a good rod, this is your rod!"

"This past June on a family vacation, I found myself on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. Wading the crystal clear flats for carp. It was a far cry from fishing the mountain streams at home for native trout, but a lot of fun to say the least! After spotting several large carp cruising a along the shore, I began to doubt that I had enough rod to handle a fish that size. I would soon find out that I was wrong. I knew my 906-4 mid-flex Helios was more than up for the task when I got my first fish to the shore. At 30 plus inches and 20 lbs, I never doubted the rods strength again. With the sensitivity to gently lay out a tiny dry fly to a picky trout and the strength to bomb large streamers into a harsh great lakes wind, this rod does it all. Extremely Light, Extremely Sensitive, and Extremely Strong! I couldn't be more satisfied with this rod!"

Excellent performer,

"Having been flyfishing for only 2 years my observations and exposure to all that is available has been limited. I started with a 100 dollar Temple Fork, moved to a TLS, then got a Zero G and finally a Helios. My comparsion is to the rods noted and can be summed up simply as this "Cast like a rocket with the precision of a surgeon". No matter the type of cast, forward, roll, side arm or back hand all are presented with confidence and precision. Using a 6 wt rod I have landed 7 pound large mouth bass and 8 oz trout. The rod provides a solid precise feel that makes everything fun to catch."

Top Ten Reasons Not To buy A Helios,
April 1, 2009
By:
roytroutbumfrom Williamsburg, MA
"I have sold all my other rods in order to get my three Helios rods. I am now a self-proclaimed expert on Helios---so Listen Up if you are thinking about acquiring one. There are issues you should be aware of:
10 - Think of all the good stream time you will waste hypnotically staring like a lovesick teenager at your beautiful Helios and fondling it instead of fishing.
9 - You will miss many strikes because you will be so amazed at the extra distance you achieve that your attention will be distracted.
8 - The overwhelming desire to cuddle and speak baby-talk to a fly rod will make you look very, very foolish on the stream.
7 - Your significant other will not be happy when you want to take your Helios to bed with you.
6 - The Helios is so tough and forgiving that you may become recklessly overconfident about warding off bears, moose, coyotes, etc., with your 6-weight.
5 - You will put down many fish within easy casting distance by constantly going for the ones way-the-heck out there--simply because you can now reach them with your Helios.
4 - You will lose many flies in the bushes on the opposite bank---something you never had to be worried about before.
3 - You will fish much longer and later due to lack of fatigue, have to invest in better flashlights and be late for more dinners requiring a more plausible explanation than “I love my Helios.”
2 - The Helios is so light and casting is so effortless that you must beware of traumatic changes to your life-style caused by the compelling, overwhelming and irresistible urge to be out there fishing all the time---your family may not understand.
1 - Your fly fishing friends and other anglers may become irrationally jealous, creating Bad Karma---forcing you into becoming a solitary angler---hey, maybe that's not so bad.
Go ahead, buy the Helios---you only live once, but don't say I didn't warn you!"

Helios Number Three,
February 24, 2009
By:

"My third Helios was the 906-4 mid flex. I was now "sold" on the Helios but to justify making more Helios purchases, I sold some of my very fine rods from well known, nationally recognized manufactures. During the course of a year I sold sixteen, and purchased a few more Helios rods. The 906-4 was intended to be that versatile rod I would take on non fishing trips, yet hoping some type of fishing opportunity would present it self. I figured I could comfortably cast and fish all but the biggest and smallest flies and I would be able to fish 95% of the fish I might encounter. Though what I believed turned out to be true, the 906-4 mid flex rapidly became my "go to" rod for river Smallmouth. Generally, when I Smallmouth fish I go from sun up to sun down. The drift fishing we do requires constant casting and the need to place your fly very tight to banks, branches , rocks and any other structure that could hold a fish and where your fly could easily be lost. After a few days of this type of fishing, prior to using the my Helios, my arm was about ready to fall off. The Helios 906-4 mid flex requires amazingly little effort to achieve a long cast with outstanding accuracy. When I first fished my Helios on a Smallmouth trip I could not believe how well the rod handled the larger poppers and the pin point casts I could make. I was putting my casts right where I would look. Prior to using the Helios, I would get in the vicinity of my targets but not consistently with in inches. And best of all I can fish all day with little fatigue. I am ready to get back on the water the next morning to do it all over again, and at 63, I am no spring chicken any more!"

Landed a Big One!,

"In October, I was float tubing Kolob Resevoir in Utah. I was using my Helios while stripping in a Kolob special streamer. The 22" cut throat hit hard and immediately ran for the weeds. The rod performed beyond my expectations. The fish "spooled" me twice but with the backbone of the rod, I was able to land the fish after 15 min. of fighting. Every time I would cast to a rise, the accuracy and transfer of power was smooth and effortless. I was using a type III sink tip line and it shot the line out with little effort. It had a light swing weight therefore I was not fatigued at the end of the day."

What a ride!,

"I purchased this rod for it's lightness as I have athritis in my hands. All my fishing with this rod has been in warmwater. I have landed both largemouth and smallmouth bass with the same amount of excitement. I love the bend of the rod during the fight. These rods do give me distance with accuracy. Sensitivety... I swear that those bluegills that I did not catch, I could feel swimming by. If your looking for across the board performance these rods offer the complete package."

No distance is seemingly too great!
"I bought this because, being so light, I could use it in places where I might use a 5-wt or even a 4-wt, and have that extra power if I needed it. I was thinking mostly of the Bow River and certain Northern Ontario rivers. It has worked out exactly as I envisioned. A powerful rod with great casting accuracy and distance, superior feel and yet with the ability to delicately present a dry, say a trico spinner. I've tried the tip-flex in this model and everything I've said applies to it as well. For me and my fishing, the mid-flex is the way to go."
