Exceptional product, March 11, 2010
By: Kinnifisher

"I agreed with most previous reviews of this product. The only improvements that I would agree with are adding dividers in the main compartment. The additional change is the add on pouch attached to the outside of the pack flops around and is in the way for necessary access. This pouch could be attached elseware on the pack so it is more functional and doesn't fall of under regular use. I would attach it to the pack permanently. The overall size and shape of the pack is great for short trips when just a few items are necessary and when the large vest is to much. I ma a bag man , so this is a great product."

"After using other packs, this one finally has the perfect match for weight, space and comfort. I have used it for day long trips to the river and even with the kids out to the local ponds."

"I purchased the pack to help seperate all my fly fishing gear from the other salt water gear I will be useing for red's and trout, It wears nicely and has plently of room. It does not interfer with any casting motions. Not really needing a vest this is exactly what I needed."

Excellent, February 12, 2010
By: Frankthesurf from Llanarmon Yn Ial, Near the River Dee, North Wales

"Use this as an addition to my vest. Carries all the extra bits that I might need on a day out away from the car without having a huge bag!!
Get a good 0.5 ltr flask and butties etc. along with other bits & bobs.
Only drawback is the clasp that holds the outer pocket on, definitely needs a rethink as it does'nt lock properly and the pocket could easily be lost.
Take note Orvis R & D!
Here's to the start of the 2010 North Wales trout season"

Excellent Product with a single downfall, January 16, 2010
By: Rdenni627 from Columbus, OH

"I must say this sling pack has been a godsend to me in comparison to a standard or mesh vest. Spending most of my time fishing a central Ohio trout club in early summer, I tend to overheat wearing a simple t-shirt paired to vest. Upon receipt of this sling pack it opened up a whole new world of comfort and freedom of movement that I had only experience before when dropping my vest to the turf. My only concern lies with the detachable fly-box pocket... The poly-propylene clasp mechanism for attaching the pocket to main sling has a tendency to fail and detach without warning. While it has only happened 2-3 times over a 20-30 uses, it only takes one instance of losing your entire fly box in the wilderness to find this drawback severely unacceptable (fortunately hasn't happened yet as I keep my eye on it) The overall construction of sling pack is fabulous and the pockets, loops, and sheaths, are all attuned to carrying exactly what you need (no more and no less). A little re-engineering of the pocket clasp and I would give this thing 5 stars across the board!"

"For me, this pack solved all my problems. No longer have a wading jacket with stuff pockets and no more bulk with the jacket. It is so easy to move to the front on me to get what I need and then so easy to slide to my back and does not interfere with my fly fishing at all. I do not use the waist belt as I do not find it necessary to use. I have not seen anything else like this on the market. Great Product Orvis!"

great product, December 31, 2009

"This a great product, i have been looking for this type of bag for a while.

The only thing that would make this bag better would of been placing more D rings on this bag."

good value..but orvis please, November 24, 2009
By: jschmidt from Denver Colorado

"The front pocket fits a standard size water bottle easily. I use it for my flies, it fits 4 medium size boxes or 2 large streamer boxes.
The larger rear pocket has a ton of room, but IMO is the wrong shape. It has a bowl shape with a front and back divider. A rectangle shape would hold much more gear. as it is you get the "wifes purse" effect: everything jumbled in the bottom. It needs more dividers
The material is great, though it is not waterproof, I have dunked it many a time with out a drop inside the pockets.
It is also very comfortable. When fishing I feel like I have much more movement then in a vest.

IMO this pack is not for you if you make constent changes to you setup in the middle of the river. the lack of organizational dividers/pockets makes you feel like your digging throw a "purse". Not a pleasure on land. and even worse in the water.

IMO this pack is for you if you don't make a ton of changes to your set up or don't mind doing it from the shore. You like having the front of your body free. Carrying larger gear (water, camera, spare spools...) Also it is great for hikes, fishing or not, into mountain lakes and ponds. most times backpacks are just to much and your vest is not enough.
and for the price $49... your getting a storage system your not braking the bank for.

Orvis: as a customer I would love to see a better organization system build into the large pocket."

great pack, except it goes over the WRONG SHOULDER, November 13, 2009
By: mgentemann from spokane, WA

"theoretically a great pack. feature-wise, quality-wise, well done. not too big, not too small. fits well along the back. has less going on in the front than the sling i currently use. i like accessible stuff that i can keep out of the way. so a sling is perfect for me. this seemed like a great match.

but i fish right-handed, and THIS SLING GOES OVER THE RIGHT SHOULDER! every other sling pack i've ever seen goes over the left shoulder, leaving the right arm/shoulder free to cast. it's VERY uncomfortable to have the weight of the pack on the same shoulder you're casting with all day. never got better, couldn't get used to it, and i tried hard. gave it to a lefty friend, he loves it. pretty fatal design flaw.
reccomend highly for lefties, but not for anyone else."

Great alternative to chest packs and vests., September 14, 2009
By: 5446 from lehigh valley, pa

"Vests are too hot, even standing in a 65 degree trout stream, much less under the baking sun in a saltwater bay.

Chest packs are awkward on some of us, and generally can feel like they're in the way.

I've sacrificed too much dignity with the rubber pants, funny hats, and general standing about waving a stick for anything that's too closely related to a "fanny pack" for my liking.

Really cuts back the options.. but this sling bag will do quite nicely. Its the right size to force you to carry few unneccessary widgets, its mostly out of the way, and it doesn't cause you to overheat or even wear out due to carrying it over the shoulder.

The removable rear pocket that clips into the shoulder strap to become a front pocket is really novel.

Heck, its almost perfect. Almost.

I don't know what I've done with the removable pocket anymore (and I owned the improved version). Furthermore, when in front it makes it difficult to access zingers, tippet, etc that I normally keep up there. I have no idea what the dropper tube was intended for. And the waist straps are short for the big-and-tall crew. Those are the small complaints.

But the big one? Just not waterproof enough. I understand there's limits to just what we can do with fabrics, but more than once I've waded out of the stream only to realize that I'd taken on serious water in my sling pack.

A few little things would really go towards making you forget about that.... A flykeeper patch (I purchased a minibox to make up for it), another D ring or two somewhere besides the over-the-shoulder strap (I substituted a carabiner in the dropper tube), and a truly waterproof inside pocket (plastic ziplock bags and hope will have to do me, there).

These minor quibbles (and the major one) go a long way towards trying to lower the worth of the sling pack, but none the less there's just nothing else really out there that does this. Furthermore, its very reasonably priced, making it an outstanding value for Orvis quality, and the reputation to stand by their equipment. I've recommended this long and hard to anyone who seeks an alternative to sweaty vests or bulky packs. The most important advice to consider is that you must be willing to downsize, or already be a lighter packer."

Sling Pack, September 7, 2009
By: KGro from Dallas Texas

"This bag meets my expectations, but I would have used a fabric that is more water repelant if I were to design it. The bag works well, everything is easy to get to. The D ring on the sholder strap is only good for hanging a net, there should have been a couple more D rings on the strap in my opinion. The zinger tube is cool, again it would have been nice to see two of these as well. The pliers sheath works well. The mesh compartment is more of a map pocket or divider, it works okay. It would have been nice to see more internal pockets in the main portion of the bag. The fly box pocket is a real nice size. I can fit two of the orvis large foam boxes, it is a tight fit though. The detachable pouch really flops around, wearing it on the front of the sholder strap is okay, but I took it off all together. A place for a fly patch would have been a nice touch also. All in all this is a good bag, I would buy it again. There has yet to be a pack that I have found to be perfect in my eyes, but this one comes the closest."

Important part of fishing arsenal, August 7, 2009
By: JJHLH1 from Texas

"I really like this product, particularly for saltwater fly fishing. It has become an integral part of my fishing arsenal. I much prefer it to a fanny pack or chest pack. The sling pack is unobtrusive and very light. It takes 2 or 3 seconds to put on and you are ready to fish. It is so comfortable you hardly realize you are wearing it. It has a large pocket to accommodate oversize saltwater fly boxes. It also has several pieces of nylon that traverse the front part of the sling. I find these to be perfect places to attach my bogagrip. When doing so, I find that the boga is almost perfectly centered when I'm casting, so it doesn't move around much, but is readily available if I need it.

The back pocket is good for a bottle of water or waterproof camera. There is also a small velcro enclosed flap for hemostats.

Well done Orvis, this is an excellent product at a very reasonable cost."

I would pay more for this pack if......., July 18, 2009
By: Scrawf

"It was waterproof! A fishing pack need to be waterproof! It needs to withstand rain but ALSO needs to be be able to take a dip in the river when deep wading! I also want to be able to stow my phone an wallet in there and not have to worry about them getting wet!

It had a better method of fixing the removable pack to the main pack - What about a pair of zips?

The central compartment was sectionalised and had a section to store my catch like a removable liner you get in a fishing game bag. I like to take a couple of fish home with me to smoke so I want to be able to carry them with me.

I would also like the central compartment to enable you to stow a plastic water bag and have a route for the pipe up the strap so you can drink from it. Many rucksacks have this feature.

It had more D rings to attach things to.

It had a suitable D Ring to attach my landing net to. This is very important! It needs to have a D ring I can attach my net to that keeps it to hand but out of the way when casting.

For the younger fisherman who want to look a bit less 'traditional' this product looks good and hits about 80% of the things it needs to do but Orvis - you need to refine it.

To be quite honest I would rather pay £149 instead of £49 and get the extra features I have discussed above.

What about it Orvis? Will you step up to the plate? I think you are on to a winner here but it needs a bit of work!

Scrawf"

Good Alternative to Vest, June 29, 2009
By: VirginiaTom

"I recently purchased the sling pack as an alternative to a vest in summer months. I purchased at the local Orvis company store on the advice of the fishing manager there. Worked as expected. I clipped the removable pouch on my wader belt rather that on the front of the strap.. Wish the shoulder strap had a d-ring located so a net keeper and net could be used. The d-ring on the strap is not located far enough to the back to use for a net.

Used one of the loops on the front of the strap to hold a small walkie talkie to keep in touch with fishing partners. That worked well. Liked the foreceps sheath but haven't quite figured out the zinger tube. Pinned the zinger for my nips on my shirt instead. Wish the net divider in the main pouch was subdivided into three sections rather than open the full lenght. The main pouch holds a 16 oz bottle of water and snacks as well as fly boxes. Like the product but could be improved upon to make it even better."

Exactly what I was looking for!, June 22, 2009
By: Eyefish from Driftless

"I have used vests, chest packs and fanny style packs over the years and found each with problems. Vests are too bulky for my taste. Chest packs always pulled my neck and sat in the way. Fanny packs took to many dunks in the river. Finally a pack that goes out of my way with no neck stress, just the right size and much easier too keep out of the water. My only beef, the outer pocket. I have removed it, but if I wanted the extra storage I would sew it on."

Why not at least water-resistant?, June 10, 2009
By: BufordSundae

"The first time I had this out on the river, we had a few periods of rain. It was probably in the rain for no more than 30 minutes total. When I opened it that night at the lodge, everything inside was soaked. A bag to be used for fishing is going to get wet, whether it's from weather, splashes from the river or a fish, or waves in a boat. It is simply unbelievable to me that a little rain could soak everything inside. Not recommended for anyone - fishing always involves water."

Overall great pack, June 5, 2009
By: bergasaurus from Denver, CO

"I agree with the comments from a number of reviewers - front detachable pouch isn't the greatest and the pack could be more waterproof, but those are minor issues. This is the perfect pack for a day trip. I've been using it for a couple months now and I like it more and more each time out. Plenty of room for all the typical gear you need and easy to "sling" from back to front - even for a big and tall guy like me."
