Good Boot For The Money,
September 22, 2009
By:
TurkeyBumfrom Alabama
"I originally ordered the Wet Wading Shoe but wasn't real happy with the fit and support, so Orvis cheerfully exchanged it for this. For only $10 more, this is the way to go. (If you really want to go lightweight, check out the Wet Wading Sandal.)
If you are going to use these for wet-wading you will have to supply your own neoprene wading socks (as you will with the Wading Shoes anyway even though they come with booties - see the reviews) as this boot is oversized to fit over stocking foot waders. In fact, like at least one other reviewer, I found these to be just a little narrow and long (in size 13 anyway, but a 12 would be too small), so I'm not sure I would agree with Orvis' recommendation for half size wearers to order one size up.
As another reviewer mentioned, some drain eyelets would be nice but not a big enough deal for me to take a drill to them.
These are well made and at the sale price are a great value."

great boot for my 1st time out,

"I'm new to fly fishin' so I don't have the experience of other boots to compare with, but these were all I hoped they would be. They were light and very comfortable to walk around in. I never slipped in them in 3 days of fishing, even in some strong current. The confidence in my footing helped me to enjoy and keep my focus on learning this great sport."

A good quality boot.,
July 27, 2009
By:
Anonymousfrom Pittsburgh, PA
"My 20 year old pair of Orvis Clearwater wading boots finally had to be retired, as there were only a few atoms still holding parts of them together. Suffice to say I got my money’s worth out of ‘em. After looking over Orvis’ selection of wading boots, I decided to give their Ultra-Light boots a try. So here’s my take on them, right out of the box.
I wasn’t surprised by reading the feedback on these boots that the size fit was an issue for some people - as I’ve found with regular shoes, sometimes I fit into a size 9 – sometimes a 9 ½ or even a 10 fits better. I ordered a size 10 and they were way too large for me. Orvis’ return policy made it easy to exchange (no cost for return shipping). The second pair fit ok, but still felt a bit big even with neoprene socks on. But by placing a pair of Dr. Scholls, gel inserts in the boots, they not only fit very comfortably now, but the added cushioning will be a welcome addition for those long days on my feet in a river.
You can’t beat the current sale price ($69.00) of these Ultra-Lights. Are they "guide quality" wading boots? No! Will they serve the purpose I need them for? Yes? If you’re hung up on having top of the line equipment from head to toe, for the sole purpose of impressing others (as if anyone else really cares what you own), then by all means, spend the $75 to $100 more for some other boot.
The construction of these Ultra-Lights is good. They seem to be built solid and should last awhile if properly cared for. I do feel that the felt soles could be of a higher quality (it's very thick & compacted), but that’s something I’ll take care of when it’s time to re-sole them. I ordered my pair with the metal studs and the quality control here could have been better – the studs on one boot are fine. On the other one however, the studs barely protrude out of the felt. I did notice that unlike my old Clearwater boots, these Untra-Lights did not have drainage holes on either side. No big deal. Using a 3/16" drill bit, I added two drainage holes on both sides of each boot, right above the arch.
So the bottom line is this: The Orvis Ultra-Light wading boots are a good buy! And if you’ve been an Orvis customer for awhile, you know they stand behind the products they sell.
The vast majority of fly fishermen I see spend more time navigating through a river – from one spot to another – then they do actually casting a fly. Slow down! Cover the water where you’re currently at more thoroughly. Not only will you no doubt catch more trout, but you’ll also find that pretty much any felt soled boot will get you where you want to go if you exercise caution on slippery rocks, etc.
And a final word of caution to all readers. If I see another fly fishermen standing waste deep in a river talking on a cell phone – as I did on my last trip to Montana – I promise you I’ll make the most accurate cast of my life, hook your phone, and send it to the bottom."

"Have used mine for several trips now, and I must say that they have held up very well. Just got them out today, to get ready for a trip to the mountains in N.C, brushed them off and they are ready to go. Had them on some slippery rocks and they hold well, with great toe and ankle support."

Light but tough.....,
November 4, 2008
By:
Spurdogfrom County Cork, Ireland
"I'm a size 12 (13 US) so finding a comfortable wading boot is a constant problem. Not any more! The Ultra Light is a perfect fit, not too loose, not too tight, and gives excellent ankle support, and as its name suggests, is very light. The first time I used them, I was fishing from a very rocky shoreline. Despite a couple of hours clambering over sharp, wet and weedy rocks, they were quite surefooted and I had only a couple of minor slips. They stood up well to bumps and scuffs, the reinforced toe cap being a useful feature. At home that evening, I carefully examined the boots for any cuts and other damage, and was pleasantly surprised to find virtually no marks at all. However, examination of the soles revealed the heads of two of the metal studs had broken off, one off each boot. Had it not been for this, I would have awarded 5 stars."

"I've owned many a boot but by far these are the finest. They just feel right. They stick to the bottom like glue. Great ankle support, laced up nicely, But the sizing seems a bit small after removing the insoles I still needed a size 12 thats 2+ sizes over my norm. other than that perfect."

Boot AND Saddle,
June 20, 2008
By:

"These are great boots for fishing my local slippery rock rivers. However, last night I went mountain biking with some friends and one of them left his saddle and seatpost at home. I had my fishing gear with me and got the idea to use one of my boots for a saddle. He lashed it on over the seat post using the laces and road that way. It looked pretty comfortable. He might order a pair for his bike!"

Best Wading shoe for the Ocean,
June 13, 2008
By:

"I primarily fish the Pacific ocean from structure. Out where we fish, boots take a serious beating from the abrasive rocks, sharp shells, and salt water torture. These boot have lasted longer than any previous boot I've owned and don't show any signs of wear. The combination of felt sole with studs gives me the stability I need even when perched on mossy rocks in the surf. The confidence one will have in these boots will allow any fisherman to concentrate on fishing not his footing. The high uppers give support and protect you ankles when rock hopping against abrasive structure. Thanks Orvis, I couldn't be happier."

Lightweight shoes let you concentrate on more important things
"I'm on my 4th set of laces, and these still look brand new, 3 seasons in! The Ultra-Light Wading shoe IS light, which is important to me as a dawn-to-dusk fisherman. That makes them comfortable. Better yet, these boots provide firm ankle and arch support and with the studded felt, they grip on everything except Northern Ontario basalt boulders (where the plain felt bottoms work better). They help make my fishing more enjoyable, so I can concentrate on my cast, rather than on how much my feet hurt."

Good value that works,

"Cost-effective, comfortable, and "as advertised" best describe these wading boots. I am a long-time fly fisherman and Orvis customer, and this product hits the mark on being light and quick-drying as well as providing needed ankle support. I wade a tricky tailwater with uneven bottom, often wading 2-3 miles and hiking back on a railroad track after dam generation starts. These are the most effective and comfortable wading boots I have worn for this purpose. Time will tell on how long they will last, but they show no signs of premature wear and tear despite many days' hard use."

Excellent boot!,
October 5, 2007
By:
SpringHillTroutKillerfrom Spring Hill, TN
"I bought these over in Pigeon Forge, TN at the Orvis store after receiving a $50 gift card from a guide. These boots are really well constructed and light weight. Their construction makes them rigid where they need to be so the pressure from the water does not compress your foot. They are confortabe for hours at a time. The soles are excellent for Tennessee rivers slippers bottoms. These should last several seasons."

Really....if you have narrow feet, these boots are it. High quality construction, comfortable, super lightweight... what more could a guy want? No diappointments here!"

"I fish in remote backcountry streams where the trout are more likely to be measured in pounds than inches. These shoes offer the sole support you need for a long hike and the traction you need for scrambling up and down mountains yet don't wear down in the long haul. They cling like cat claws to wet slippery rocks then allow you to climb out and keep moving. I have tried all types of shoes, many very expensive and these beautys have held up mile after mile and helped me to catch those elusive big ones..."
