So Far, Decent at Best,

"I had always admired Barbour Jackets and this Christmas decided to order one for myself. I commute into NYC and wanted a warm jacket. When I first ordered my Barbour, it was the week before Christmas and the customer service rep had told me that the product was unavailable until the first week in February even thought the website showed that the jacket was in stock. I called back 20 minutes later to ask why the website was not current and another rep explained that Orvis could try and search other retail stores to find one. She found a jacket from their Reno NV store and I happily ordered the jacket. When I received the jacket I was not happy. I have other wax cotton jackets from Outback and this one smelt the worst. The jacket looked as it had been worn and was very scratched. I also couldn't seem to get over the horrible odor. I called Orvis to speak with a customer service expert and they gave me a direct number to Barbour. I called and got a voice mail and left a message to call me back. I waited throughout the day and called back to receive another voicemail, this one saying Barbour reps were unavailable until after the New Year!! I still have not received a call back. I then called Orvis back that night to explain how disappointed I was with the service so far. In general the reps are very nice and this person heard me through and decided it was best to send me a new coat, this one from their Carmel IN retail store. I received the new jacket three days later. The new one was in fact brand new and after a considerable amount of research I found out that the older jacket was at least a few years old based on the patch was different as well as the enclosed care for manual. I am happy with the new coat although as much as I wanted to love it, the ordeal was quite frustrating. The jacket is not as warm as I expected and a liner or a heavy sweater is a must for cold days."
Response from Orvis:
ByOrvis Customer Service Team,
February 8, 2010
Orvis contacted this customer and expressed regret that there were errors with this order. We are happy to hear that Customer Service was finally able to get the matter straightened out. Barbour waxed cotton coats do protect from wind and rain exceptionally well. Most Barbour coats are designed to accept a zip-in liner for extra warmth; waxed cotton jackets sometimes initially have a strong odor which fades quickly with wear. Our 100% customer satisfaction guarantee is the strongest in the business, we will refund or exchange any purchase.

Outstanding!,

"I bought my Beaufort a year and half ago and absolutely love it! It's heavy enough to keep me warm on cool, damp days and strong enough to keep me dry in driving rain. I've tried the coat in the cold of winter (-10 to +30 degrees Farenheit) and it does seem a bit cold, However, I didn't buy it for cold, winter days and I do plan on buying the liner to help with the cold. Others have put in the liner for winter days and been very pleased with its warming qualities. Overall, I'd HIGHLY recommend this jacket! It's well worth the price and you won't be disappointed!"

Superb Coat,
December 29, 2009

"I bought this coat due to the fact I had inherited an older style from my late uncle, which was in a bit of a state but served its purpose.
I have found all the buttons to be Equidistant from the sewn edge.
The garment so far has provided me with the protection from the uk weather durring my shooting, and fly fishing antics.
I have purchased the matching hood, and liner which does seem to add that bit of extra warmth, but nothing that an extra thick jumper wouldn't.
This coat is an out and out weather protector from wind and driving rain, it is not a coat just to keep you warm.
Highly recomended"

"My major gripe with this coat is the alignment of the front button closures. I have exchanged 3 coats now, and they all have alignment issues on where these buttons were punched. It is quite noticeable and is an error in the manufacture of these coats.
Aside from these errors, the coat has a very nice appearance and has solid hardware. Orvis has been great and very helpful in exchanging the first two but failed to inspect the third coat (as requested) before sending it. This has resulted in unnecessary shipping back and forth.
IF the buttons had a uniform appearance (equidistant from the zipper seam), this would be a good coat."

Sharp But Not Iron,
November 29, 2009
By:
LongWalksfrom Milford, Ohio
"The versatility of this jacket makes it a value worth considering. Yes the price is hefty, but the fact that this jacket has a reach throughout the seasons and throughout a variety of venues makes for it being a much better value than first glance.
But I bought this jacket for the hunt more than the casual days at work, albeit it does both quite well. Yet despite waxing her up for the harshest of rain, I've had two of these jackets shrink almost an inch in the sleeves. The first time I chalked it up to not being waxed for 9 months, but I was told every other year would be enough.
The second time a Beaufort shrunk before my eyes was just weeks after a heavy wax. We began hunting in 30 degree weather that warmed to the 50's within hours. The sweat of my body hitting the sleeves from the inside caused them to recoil an inch within hours of beginning our hunt.
The first jacket also got a few tears but that could have been from less than a full factory coat of wax. The second jacket I personally laid it on thick to test if it would help the ability to resist tears in briars no thicker than rose bushes.
The scratches on the wax were in the dozens, but there was only the slightest and smallest of tears on one of the pockets. A few threads of reinforcement and I think this second Beaufort will be ready for many more years of hunting.
...and my is she a hot looking piece of clothing! Understated class for so many of occasions."

How do I like Barbour's Beaufort?,
November 25, 2009
By:

"I have 3 and have just ordered my fourth. They are all size 40, three in sage, one of which is the "dry" model. My recent order is #4 in Navy. #1 is ten years old and I use it working outside, #2 is for "sage casual dress", #3 is my (dry) security blanket with hood and liner for shooting Sporting Clays. #4 will be "navy dress casual". Do I like 'em? No, I love 'em!"

A Jacket to stand the test of Time!!,
October 21, 2009
By:
TheReverandfrom Scottish Highlands
"I've used a Barbour Beaufort for just about everything I do in the outdoors...hunting deer in the highlands of Scotland, Sea-Fishing in the North Sea, Driven Shooting in wet & windy Yorkshire, Wildfowling on the Solway Firth. This jacket is a great old favourite. Even the dogs like to lay on it in the car! As long as you keep the proofing in good order, this will keep you dry when the Gore-Tex brigade cry, enough! Farmers and Sportsmen have worn these coats for over a hundred years in Britain, there can be no greater testament to the special place they occupy in the national psyche. Downsides? In warmer weather they will make you sweat, and they can smell oily when new...these are just small problems though."

Versatile,
October 11, 2009
By:
Locumfrom UK
"I live in the country and work in town and the Barbour suits both environments. For me, it is a first class cold/wet weather garment that looks and wears just as well over a suit as with jeans and boots, but it really comes into its own when I'm caught in the rain walking the dogs in open country. I keep a Barbour waxed cap in the game pocket, also called a poacher's pocket over here, for just such occasions.
It is tough, but not indestructable. Fortunately, Barbour will professionally repair and rewax their products for very reasonable cost. How many garment manufacturers will do that these days?"

Ladies like it too.,

"I bought my Beaufort in 1996 in Scotland. I was freezing in July, but the Beaufort made it a much more pleasant trip and kept me bone dry. I bought the hood with it so I was impervious to the rain. No one has mentioned the ton of pickets and storage spots on this jacket. I know it's for the "fowl" but it works great for carrying all sorts of things especially when you're flying international and limited to carryon weight. Ladies, if you take the time to try on a few to get the right size, you won't be disappointed. I've had mine re-waxed once by Orvis and it looks great. I hope to pass it down to my children it's that good."

Great coat for all occasions,
May 28, 2009
By:
York
"Okay, it is a lint-magnet that weights a ton. So why do I love it? Ruggedly handsome, lots of pockets, sturdy, and rain-proof are the reasons.
I have worn mine -- with the warm-pile lining and a sweater -- to the glaciers in the Canadian Rockies and it kept me warm and dry. Also worn it without the lining while visiting Scotland where the North Sea gales blew (it is wind-proofed as well), and braved the down pour in Ireland in the spring.. But the Beaufort is more than just a raincoat. I felt right at home wearing it while window-shopping on Savile Row. Yes, you can wear the beaufort in any setting and still look stylish.
The sole reason I did not give it 5 stars is because my warm pile lining came with a snap button missing (I am astounded by the poor workmanship) But overall, I love my Beaufort and wear it more often than my Loro Piana Horsey.
Just ordered a light weight one for summer. Hope it really is light weight."

Disappointed with fabric,
May 20, 2009
By:
Lifelisterfrom Florida
"I needed a flexible field jacket for birding with great square pockets and adaptability. I travel light and wore this recently in crazy Colorado snow, rain and windstorms and was reasonably protected in all with proper layers beneath. Likes: Classy , great pockets, quality zippers, water, snow and wind resistance, longer length which keeps tushy protected in bad weather Dislikes: noticeably odd wax odor; fabric always feels damp and shows wrinkles; heavy, a bit bulky; zipper is sturdy but hard to start. For the price, I wanted to love it and I don't."
Response from Orvis:
ByOrvis Customer Service Team,
July 19, 2009
Orvis contacted this customer and apologized that this jacket did not meet their expectations. New Barbour waxed cotton items do have a slight odor and a stiffness until the item is broken-in through the customer's use. We are happy to hear that the jacket performed as expected on most levels and we appreciate all comments. We offered an exchange or refund, whichever the customer preferred.

Outstanding Purchase,
January 17, 2009
By:
Massvikingfrom Lynnfield, Ma.
"I bought my Beaufort jacket a few months ago in Beverly, Mass and have worn it every day since. It is very well made and can be worn with either jeans or over a sport coat. This thing sheds water like a duck - best raincoat I've ever had. I was looking for a jacket that I could wear in all types of weather conditions for work and play and the Beaufort really fits the bill. Got the polarquilt zip in liner when it got real cold and it is amazingly warm. It was 6 degrees w/o wind chill this morning and with a t-shirt, fleece pullover and the Beaufort on I was good to go. I am in and out of the car a lot every day for work and this is the best jacket for driving - dry and warm without all the bulk of a winter coat. Gets lots of compliments especially from other Barbour wearers. Love the olive color - it's casual and business at the same time. The Beaufort is not cheap but absolutely worth every penny. Wearing this jacket makes the ever changing New England weather easier to take."
"I purchased a Barbour Beaufort from Orvis, Carmel, IN on 10/29/2006. I wrote the date of purchase along with my name on the personal info label inside the right front pocket since I wanted to see if the jacket would last 30 years plus as reported by some Barbour owners. Anyway today, 1/13/09, while shoveling snow, I heard the jacket shell rip near the left front pocket. I was shocked since these jackets are designed to last a lifetime under hard use.
Anyway, what made me feel better is when I called the main Orvis number, Customer Service Rep Misty told me that if I produce the original receipt, they would give me 125% of what I paid for the jacket. If I cannot find the receipt, I could simply exchange the jacket for a new one in Carmel, IN.
If this is the case, then I will forever be an Orvis customer.
I still love Beaufort jackets, but I am not sure if I would wear my new one while working in the yard."

German weather ain't got nothing on this one!,
November 18, 2008
By:
Stilldogfrom Landstuhl, Germany
"Okay, excuse the bad English in the description but this jacket is truly amazing and well worth the 300 Euro's I paid for it in Heidelburg, Germany. I have owned this jacket since 2006 and made sure I got it cleaned and re-waxxed. I did this with a merchant in New Hampshire who I whole heartedly recommend. What I did find out is the sleeves needed about a 1/2" letting out. The vendor I speak of does this and does an ultra professional job. He added a leather cuff which really goes with the jacket. without a doubt I would recommend this jacket for the nastiest weather out there. ps get the liner."

"The Barbour Beauford is a very well made, all weather, classic coat. I have had mine now for two months and I look forward to the rainy weather so that I can wear my Beauford. I have owned other waxed coats which only now I realize, this was the coat which the others tried to match. Its expensive - yes, but worth the price. With jeans or a sport coat, in the city or horse country, you cannot go wrong with the Beauford."

The toughest outdoor jacket,
May 27, 2008
By:
Northumbrianfrom Northumberland, England
"I'm into my second Barbour even though I have failed to wear out the first yet - it was a cast off from my wife & was always a little small. It has kept me dry in an open boat fishing in Scottish rain & spray. When shooting, it will go anywhere my dog does short of swimming. Fir woods, brambles, thorn thickets make no impression on it. It's been slammed in car doors, slid down muddy banks, scraped over rocks, been stuffed with fish and game birds and even used as a stretcher to carry a dog. Dirt just sluices off. It's waterproof & windproof but you can mix your own layers underneath for warmth. Only disadvantage is you can get condensation after a day's outdoor work but no breathable jacket is this tough so it's worth the occasional minor discomfort. It's even made entirely of natural fabrics. I hear they're becoming fashionable in America - great news. The Barbour jacket and Orvis crushable felt hat are perfect allies against any weather."
