Great rod, but totally different, October 4, 2009
By: Rhodani

"This rod is exceptional - beautiful, luxurious finish, incredibly light in hand and able to punch a No. 3 line a country mile. Which is what suprised me. Although sold under the new "Superfine" series heading with a purported full flex action of 2.5 (!!!), this rod's action has nothing to do with the sweet, slow, delicate actions of the previous superfine series with the unsanded blanks. In hand, the rod's flex action feels more like a 6 or 7. The Tippet, Brook Trout, Seven-Eleven and similar rods of yore were much slower, and somehow captured the heart of small stream flyfishing. But don't get me wrong - this rod is a brutally precise and efficient fish catching tool. It's just no longer a "Superfine" in the previous sense of the word, and somehow I regret that."

Best Rod Period, August 17, 2009
By: McMartin

"I purchased this rod a few months ago, primarily for the tight quarters in the Smoky Mountains. I have partnered it with a CFO I and Wonderline Gen3 Trout. I do not fish with any of my other rods anymore, even on bigger waters. A gorgeous rod to be sure, but that's only the cherry on top. The Superfine is so supple, and flexes so smoothly that flies nearly float down onto the water. It is so sensitive, you can feel a strike the minute the fish touches the hackle on a dry fly, and it fights well from hook-up to net. Superb rod, Orvis. I don't know why anyone who desires a precision instrument would want any other rod!"

Problems with my rod, March 22, 2009
By: Chrmax from Franklin, IN

"I bought this rod a year ago and it has been great until today. It broke while casting a light weight streamer today. I am sending it back to Orvis for repairs. This is the second one I have seen break. The one at the store broke when the employee was trying to get me to purchase it. Plus all the chrome or metal finish has faded and tarnished after about 30 uses. I just think for the money you might should get better quality. When it is not broke it cast great though."

Response from Orvis: By Orvis Customer Service Team, August 24, 2009
Orvis Customer Service contacted this customer and apologized that his rod broke while casting and for the faded finish on the rod. Orvis thanked this customer for the feedback and has passed these comments along to our rod developer, so that he may further investigate these durability issues. Exceptional craftsmanship, December 8, 2008
By: RBach

"I've just entered into the Orvis family after 20+ years of fly-fishing, and wow! I've always known that Orvis was the summit on the mountain of all fly rods, and now I've finally made it to the top.

My 3-W Superfine Trout Bum (763-4) is truely awesome in all aspects. Extremely accurate and a joy to cast. Able to handle those monster rainbows in the South Fork of the Boise, and make that 12-inch Trinity Lakes cut-throat feel like a marlin. It is definitely my "go-to" rod.

Beyond that, it is a masterpiece to behold, and I often find myself just taking it out of the tube & sock just to look at it. Paired with a new English-made CFO II I got from the internet (shame on you Orvis!), it is the best rig I've ever used. There is no better, and now, there is no looking back.

To all the Orvis Crafsmen and women, thank-you for all your efforts, time and skill. They all show through every time I can do what I love; fly fish with nothing short of the best and most beautiful gear made."

Worth every penny and then some, November 20, 2008
By: GuyFlyFisher from MI

"I use this rod for small stream prospecting when I am going to walk in a long way. It packs down very small. The fit and finish are beautiful and it mates well with a CFO I. I finf that DT line give a very smooth and tight loop. While small trout are fun to catch with this rod, the surprise use for this rod is bluegill. I find myself looking for excuses to go out in the spring and dry fly fish for bluegill. They feel like monsters with the Superfine. I have even (unintentionally) taken a few 2-3 lbs. bass with it. The Superfine 3 wt. is a must for any small stream/pound fisherman."

A (Super) Fine Purchase, November 9, 2008
By: Mac1081 from Fairbanks, AK

"After purchasing the Helios and enjoying it thuroughly (that is understated), I decided to visit Orvis again with hopes to fill a long standing need in my rod arsenal - a full-flex graphite rod. After I received my purchase I took time to admire the handsome craftsmenship and then quickly took it to the water. This rod really surprised me. I expected to get only slower, more open loops and delicate presentation and the delight of fighting a fish on a full-flex outfit. But Orvis packed more than that into this rod. It can certainly handle high line speeds and tight loops and it will cast a great distance for a 3wt rod as well. Mending line during and after the cast was done with ease and over-all performance was simply terrific. My first day in the river with this rod was smiles all around and it has been that way wherever my Superfine and I go."

Outstanding lightweight rod, October 22, 2008
By: Hooch from Belle Vernon, PA

"Can't say enough about this rod. It beauty, flex, balance and muscle make it my favorite light weight rod. Very responsive to setting small fly hooks. Put it right up there, if not ahead of my discontinued 7' 11" 4 wt.. Don't let the size of it fool you as it has enough muscle to quickly and some nice size trout without stressing them. I highly recomend it to any small fly angler."

A Work Of Art, September 6, 2008
By: moodmonster from South Jersey

"This is a fantastic fly rod. I love to go ultralight with my fishing and this rod handles the fine tippets and small flies like a champ. It has taken over as the go to rod on my rack. Thanks you for a work of art."

Spring River Rainbow on Orvis Trout Bum Rod

"I was so excited to get an Orvis rod, especially a Trout Bum - made for the small streams that I was used to fishing in NC. The rod lives up to the hipe of being easy to use on small streams in tight places where it is easy to get hung up and even does well on larger waters like the Spring River in Arkansas where I caught my first trout on a fly I had tied myself with my Trout Bum and Battenkill Barstock reel. This rod is perfect for small streams and stout enough for mid-sized streams. Thanks Orvis for a rod that meets my needs!"

Fantastic 3 wt, June 12, 2008

"Bought this rod late last year and immediately fell in love. Smooth and silky is the on;y way to describe the action, but don't be fooled. This rod has the backbone to subdue good size trout."

AWESOME ROD FOR SMALL STREAM POWER AND DELICACY, May 18, 2008
By: ALLABOUTTROUT from EVERETT, WASHINGTON

"THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SUPERFINE TROUT BUM RODS FOR FISHING SMALL TO MID-SIZED STREAMS. IT IS GREAT FOR THROWING A 3 WT LINE UP TO 45' WITH TIGHT LOOPS AND EVEN IN WINDY CONDITIONS, HOWEVER, IT HAS GREAT DELICACY ON SHORT CASTS WITH OUTSTANDING TIPPET PROTECTION. I KNOW THIS ROD IS LOOSELY BASED ON THE ORIGINAL "TIPPET" ROD, WHICH I'VE OWNED AND THIS ROD IS SIMILAR, BUT FASTER. I FEEL IT HAS MUCH MORE LINE CONTROL AND DISTANCE THAN THE "TIPPET", BUT STILL GREAT SENSITIVITY. THE LENGTH IS GREAT AND SO ARE THE ROD COMPONENTS AND DETAIL ON THE BLANK. I WOULD NOT CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THIS ROD!"

Beautiful Rod, April 22, 2008
By: pescator7 from New York, NY

"Just purchased this rod a few weeks ago and took it out this weekend for the first time. This rod will easily become my new favorite for small river and stream fishing in the Northeast. The full flex allows for delicate presentations and is a dream to roll cast in tight quarters. Although I don’t judge a rod by aesthetics, this is the prettiest rod I have ever owned. I’m glad I had this one personalized because it’s destined to become a family heirloom."

Instant Casting Feedback, November 22, 2007
By: scooter

"My new Trout Bum 3wt/ four piece rod is an excellent addition to my fly rod collection. It is everything Orvis claimed in its promotions - light and responsive. This 3 wt rod has become my first choice for most streams I fish in the northeast. This rod can easliy go up or down in line weight. The rod is a fine fishing instrument that really becomes a full extension of the caster's arm. This rod deserves a tip of the hat to the rod designers at Orvis."

Superfine Troutbum 3 wt, October 9, 2007
By: Racine from Vail, Colorado

"I was looking for a 3 wt medium to medium/fast 7'6" 4pc rod to cast in small streams, with overhead cover. I needed a rod able to float a 6-7x tippet 6-20ft with min. effort. I cast it on a 10 knot day and got it to do my deeds effortlessly. It is really a slow-medium, depending on the year of manufacture. One superfine was a noodle while the newest model was more of a medium(labeled full flex on both rods but newest was a 'Trout Bum' designation). The finish is nice and it's got a traditional reel seat/ double ring reel holder. Nice rods for designated function. I think the Trout Bum/ medium action/ full flex could handle 16-20" trout on a light tippet and still bring it in. My fast action 4 wt winston IBIS broke off so many large trout on fine tippets I traded it in."

Terrific Rod, October 4, 2007
By: JackFromPA from Lancaster, PA

"I just got my rod and it casts extremely well. Long casts are effortless, roll casts unroll nicely and leave barely a ripple on the surface. This rod looks great too! I love this rod and highly recomend it."

"I have had this rod about 2 weeks and gotten to fish it 3 times. This is my second fly rod, my other rod is a fast action 9 foot 4wt.

I was looking for something that was light, had a full flex and very traditional styling and features. After seeing this rod and getting to cast it at the local Orvis store there really wasnt much else to look at, it was exactly what I wanted.

This rod is wonderful to fish with, it's so light and responsive. If I need to make a 45 foot cast, no problem. It just goes where I want it to and its very easy to control loop size also. But if I need to make a short little cast, meaning about 8 feet of line plus leader its so easy just to float the fly right into position with harldy a ripple.

I have this rod matched up with the CFO II Conservation Limited Edition, is there a better looking rig on the river? I dont think so!"
