"I have to rate this hat as highly effective in insect repellent capability. I wear it in conjunction with the insect repellent shirts, and have very good success.
Mosquitos are the issue where I live and West Nile virus has been in the area so insect protection is important here. If you keep your sleeves down and your hat on, I have had literally no bites whatsover even when there were swarms of mosquitos. Very good indeed."

Does the job but....,

"Pros: The insect shield hats help keep the bugsaway as stated.
Cons: They are a bit costly for a baseball type cap and Orvis no longer offers 2 size ranges in this cap. This hat does not fit those with mature size heads even with the elastic."

Elephant man size,

"I previously had a hat like this I bought at a store and lost it. The old one had a strap adjustment on the back. This adjustment worked great for someone who is active with varying weather conditions(wind, rain). This replacement I ordered is sized for someone who has a head the size of a slop bucket. Hopefully heads this size are full of brain and not bone? Orvis needs to make a Medium size available or go back to the strap ajustment. This one size fits all was clearly labeled extra large upon arrival."

"Wonderful addition to my collection. Best hat I own! purchased for fly fishing on the local streams. but looks so nice I wear it everywhere. Wife even likes it (always a big plus).. Summer fly fishing around here can be nasty the bugs can eat you alive! but while wearing this hat the bugs stay away from my face and neck as stated works very well haven't had a skeeter or black fly bite me above the shoulders all season. would and have recommend to my Friends"

"Bought this hat for a trip to Canada for pike. While I can't say it stopped all the millions of attacking mosquitoes, it did keep the "infiltrators" to a manageable number. I did far better with it than my companions did without it. Definitely a must have if you are going to "bug" territory."

"i got this hat to fish with, but when I got it in the mail it was really nice. Now my wife wants one to wear, and does not want me to wear it fishing. I got the moss colored. really looks great and fits my head perfect, 7 1/4. Could easily fit bigger heads. I would not recommend for those with a size 6 3/4 or smaller, it may swallow you up."

Thunder Bay in May: blackfly & mosquito country

BUZZ OFF hat & shirt, thank goodness
"May & June in Northern Ontario mean blackflies: many, many blackflies. So many that when you close your eyes at night, thousands of little white dots flit around almost as if you were watching a light show. Blackflies aren't content to just land on your arm, or the back of your ear, or in your hair and bite. They crawl down inside your clothes & waders to get their fill. Soaking yourself in DEET several times a day helps, and so does wearing this BUZZ OFF cap. It is terrific! The number of blackflies circling your head noticeably diminishes as soon as you put it on. Well done ORVIS!"
