A proven design for many years, and one that professional and amateur tiers alike rely upon, the HMH Spartan, in a review on flyfisherman.com, was "highly recommended" as a tremendous deal in a traditional, versatile vise. A real workhorse made to last, the vise features draw collet jaws of chrome-moly tool steel, investment cast, precision machined, hand finished, and then hardened. The Orvis edition features a nickel-plated cam lever and green base. C-clamp version opens to a 2" gap.

Excellent Vise,
January 12, 2010

"I received this vise as a present from my wife. I wanted/needed an upgrade from my old kit vise. I also needed a pedestal base as I do not have any suitable area to clamp a vise, and my tying station moves from room to room as dictated by other "more important," family activities.
Well she surprised me with this vise, and went on her own to the Orvis store wher they advised her to buy me this vise after she explained that I fish for anything that swims whenever I have the time. The Orvis staff steered her in the right direction. This vise comes stock with a very solid base and solid parts. It can easily handle flies up to 3/0 and down to 20. The rotary feature is great too.
The great thing about this vise is not it's beautiful appearance, great brand name, status symbol or bells and whistles. It is a fly tying vise, a means to an end, a perfect tool that allows you to tie whatever fly you need to tie to catch whatever fish you are targeting. The company that manufactures this vise, HMH vise, stands behind this product one hundred percent and it is made in the USA. HMH vise also sells other jawas if you are dedicated to micro or macro flies. They also sell a set of jaws that is ONLY for tying tube style flies.
The bottom line is that the Orvis staff hit a home run when they advised my wife to buy me this vise. And the HMH Vise makes you forget there is a vise attached to your hook while you are tying, so you can concentrate on what your tying."

"I must say that this vice is without a doubt the finest vice I have ever used. You can see the precision machining and detailed workmanship when you take it out of the box. You will appreciate the smoothness of the lever when you install and grip the hook in the tool steel jaws. I also like the fact that you can change the jaws without any tools whatsoever and in just seconds. This vice is built to last a lifetime . I would recommend this vice for anyone ."

"The title of this review says it all. The HMH Spartan vise has always appealed to me for its great machined looks. The feel of the vise reflects those looks. It is sturdy and with no miscellaneous levers or screws to get in the way. It is as simple to operate as possible, yet provides a steady, adjustable rotating capability. I have been extremely pleased with this vise. From the first fly I tied with it, my interest and enthusiasm for tying my own flies has been renewed."

"I first realized that this was the tool that I'd been searching for as I unpacked it and began reading the instructions. It has the same feel as most other fine tools and instruments. I've owned other vises, and tried out a few others--they were either uncomfortable or difficult to adjust. This vise was immediately a pleasure to use. Thanks for adding enjoyment to my hobby."
