"I just got this vest in yesterday--I ordered it for my Dad for Christmas. It is completely gorgeous--it almost looks like real, worn leather. You have to look closely to see that it is cloth. The back of the vest is also very attractive, with a waist band and a nice tag beneath the neck. It is fully lined with the checked fabric you see. The edges are so beautifully sewn--it is outstanding workmanship. It seems well sized, although it MIGHT be a little roomier around the middle than an XL usually is (but that is a good thing!) It came packed in Orvis tissue, and in an Orvis gift box with a bow. The only bad thing is that it took a long time to get here--alomst three weeks. I would recommend this vest to anyone--I am thinking of ordering one for my husband, (with expedited shipping)."

"Another reviewer said it was like "an old friend", which I think is very well said.
This is a well made, substantial item. Even the stiching is of a higher quality and strength.
There are some items through Orvis that can be described as "best friend" articles; apparel that you love and that lasts for many years; this is certainly one of them.
I would add to the "best friend" items of comfort and longevity: The WW II khakis and Mephisto Match walking shoes. In fact, the man who holds the Guiness Book of World Records for walking continents used Match.
The vest goes so well with the wrinkle free Signature shirts and the WWII khaki chinos that they ought to be advertised together!

"Let's face it. Unlike shirt and pants, the vest is an optional article of clothing. And underappreciated, I say. I like the way it keeps your core warm without restricting your freedom of movement. More than that, it says you know that style counts for something. No better vest than this to get reacquainted with an old friend. The fabric looks almost like leather. The color has a textured quality: dark brown base tones with red earth overtones. Looks well-worn (not worn out) and comfy out of the box. Good choice with jeans or khakis."

"Don't think about it, buy it, you won't be sorry. The broken-in look really does make the waistcoat look like an old friend you've been wearing for years. Far better than I was expecting. Trust me, you will not be dissappointed. This is the best clothing product I've ever bought. Purchased this waistcoat after returning the "Original moleskin waistcoat" due to being unhappy about the standard of tailoring - see my review.."

"This is a great vest! It completely exceeds my expectations. The weathered appearance makes it look straight out of the old west. It is well-made and even the lining looks great. Fun to wear."
