Clearwater wading boots,
January 7, 2010
By:
JamesH
"I am now in my second season with these boots, using them mainly for fishing freestone rivers in the Yorkshire Dales. I chose boots with felted soles to provide extra grip on mossy and slippy limestone/slate. They cope well with this, although I was very disappointed that the felt soles came off in only the second year, surprisingly on the same day (as with another reviewer here). I only fish 10-15 times a season so wouldn't consider this excessive wear and tear. I have unfortunately now lost the receipt so I'm not sure where I stand in terms of a replacement.
Despite the issue with the felt soles I have been impressed with the overall performance of these boots, and consider them value for money. They're lightweight and comfortable for day-long use."

good buy,
September 30, 2009

"I have had my boots for about 6 years and love them. I had a problem with the sole coming loose but fixed it that night and was back int the water the next morning. I dont fish like most people when I get on the water I am there for the day. I spend as much as 10 - 12 hours in the water . If these boots were not comfortable I couldn't do that. They wear well lace and stay tight . They are easy to get on and off and give good traction on mossy rocks. I plan on buying a new pair just so I can let my daughter have my old ones. Better new for me than her cause I fish more."

six years old,

"These are the best performing, longest lasting, and most economical boots I have owned. They are now going on the sixth season. The only problem I have had was with the felt soles coming loose at the heel end. I epoxied them back and have had no problems since. I may have thought that to be a quality problem if I had not been through the same abuse these boots have been through. I have taken them through six seasons of Missouri limestone streams, as well as knee-deep mud, multi-mile hikes, all the way to colorado beaver bogs. I purchased a pair of new stiffer, more protective and much more expensive boots two years ago but I rarely wear them. It is kind of like, how it is so comfortable to hop into an old pick-up rather than a convertible to go fishing. Some things just FEEL right."

Not durable,

"After 2 seasons the felt sole fell off (amazingly, both fell off on the same day!). I'm not sure how long wading shoes should last. I probably used them about 35 times before they failed. I expected them to last longer."

"I love these boots. They are super light, they stay laced up, and they air out quickly.
The only problem, which I am hoping is a fluke, is that after the 7th use, my felt sole came off completely. I didn't even realize it until I came back to my car after fishing.
I just called Orvis. Absolutely awesome customer service! They gave me the option to buy a new pair to arrive in two days (I paid for overnight shipping). When I recieve the new boots, I shove the faulty ones back in the box and ship it back. Once they get it, they refund the cost back to me. (minus shipping).
Today is Wednesday, the boots are due to come Jul 3 on a Friday = FISHING JULY 4th WEEKEND....HECK YEAH!"

A great boot at any price. A classic.,
March 5, 2009
By:
Imagofrom North Yorkshire, UK
"I've had a lot of wading boots and these are just about the best I've had at any price. They are not just an 'economy' boot. Why are they so good? First and foremost the quality of felt is excellent, so the grip is excellent. This is the raison d'être of a wading boot and so of utmost importance. The strange thing is that most anglers don't realise that not all felt is the same. I've had expensive boots with poor felt. However, this felt is the best I've come across. That is the kind of attention to detail that makes the difference. Secondly, the boots are light and compact; which is what I want in a boot. They are actually lighter than a lot of so called 'lightweight' boots. They are also very flexible and comfortable. Maybe if you're the kind of angler than wants protection and support these boots may not be ideal, but I've never had problems in this area. Finally even though they are lightweight they are strong where it is needed; notably in the sole and the laces. What more do you really need? The design is actually similar to the classic US army jungle boots designed for use in similar wet conditions. For me this is a classic too."

Durability Issues,

"I bought these boots because of their price - and once again I was reminded that I get what I pay for. One important part of any boot is the lacing system, and this one is weak...so you'd better lace up with a gentle touch. On about the 10th wear, one of the fabric lace eyelet retainers busted loose (see picture). I can continue to use them without that eyelet, but the fit is a little strange now because the pressure is unevenly distributed up the face of the boot. I would advise spending a little more and getting an Orvis boot with a better lacing system and pass on the bargain footwear."

Good Value,

"For the money these are great boots. I wouldn't use them around rocky streams because they just aren't heavy enough to protect your feet. They are great, however, for rivers like the Missouri and Bighorn where the bottoms have a lot of silt and few rocks. They are very light and comfortable and in the right application perfect."

Solid Fishing boot,

"Have taken a few trips with these boots and am impressed so far. I ordered my regular size, and they fit just fine. The boots naturally shrink some as they dry. They are comfortable and seemingly durable. I will be buying some gravel guards or gaiters with these as well."

Why spend more??,
October 28, 2008
By:
ChrisBfrom Derbyshire UK.
"Wader boots are for walking in rivers, these do the job and well. So why spend more? I go by the principle , spend as much as you can on waders and get good but cheap boots. I have paired the boots up with the Pro guide waders and they go together perfectly."

Not a good product,
October 9, 2008
By:

"I purchased these boots with the idea that they would be able to stand up to 2-3 fishing trips a week during the season. In less then 2 years I've gone through 2 pairs of these "wading boots". The first pair had to be replaced after only 4 months because the stitching around the sole was coming undone. I had the boots replaced (thanks to the great costumer service of Orvis) but the same thing happened to me the very next season. I love Orvis rods and the service I get with the company but these boots just aren't a good purchase. I'm also reluctant to try the Henry's Fork II model due to my experiences with the quality of these boots"

Lightweight & Functional,
September 30, 2008
By:
Mudboyfrom Southern California
"These boots are lightweight and easy to put on and take off. I’ve used them a ½ dozen times and haven’t had any problems with them. Make sure you select waders that fit your foot well, and then select boots sized to the stocking feet on the waders. I had to oversize my boots by one size because the stocking feet on the waders I purchased were too big for me. Subsequently, they are a tad loose. I should have spent a few more minutes at the store walking around to make sure the fit was correct on both the waders and the boots before purchasing. It’s only a problem if I have to walk a great distance, then they start to rub. The felt soles provided sure footing in the stream bottom and worked fine along the trail. The canvas construction drains well and dries quickly. An excellent value at $59!"

Great boots but......,
September 28, 2008
By:
Tieoneonfrom Richmond, VA
"I bought a pair of Clearwater felt soled wading boots at a retail Orvis store. Wore them two days in a row and stitching around the side/sole on left boot pulled loose. Took back to store and replaced with no problem. Next trip same issue occured in nearly the same place with second pair. Took back again and almost got money back. But since they were comfortable and fit well, I swapped for a third pair and spread seam sealer all the way around the stitching on both boots. No problems now after wearing multiple times. Sounds like a lot of trouble for these boots but they are a good value and the local retail store is good to work with when issues do occasionally arise. Hopefully Orvis will file a complaint with their supplier for the quality defects that got through to their customer.....twice in a row."

Careful on sizing,

"Buying one size up won't be sufficient with these shoes. I wear a size 11 and bought a size 12 for a fishing trip. By the time I got home my big toes were black and blue. You need to buy two sizes up for this shoe so be very careful."

Get what you pay for,
August 20, 2008

"These are not $150 boots and you can't expect them to perform like they are. I did find the need to buy two sizes up. They seemed to shrink or contract when they dried. And of course, there's no ankle support which is fine for small midwestern streams. After nearly 7 years in a pair, I treated myself to more expensive boots and really appreciate the upgrade, but these served me well for the price."
