Cheap reel,
January 6, 2010
By:
waterplayrfrom New Jersey
"This reel is inexpensive and you get what you pay for. Upon opening package on Christmas day my son dropped the reel onto a carpeted floor from 3 feet up. The base plate snapped off upon impact. Now to send in 10.00 just to have it fixed with possible aditional costs does not make sense. The base is a cheap cast aluminum which is not strong."

"i purchased the Clearwater III reel at the beginning of the season and it looks, feels, and works wonderfully. I currently have 5-wt and will be purchasing a spare spool for use with 7-wt. It has enough capacity to do almost anything i need to do. Thanks Orvis."

great purchase,

"I purchased a Clearwater III reel last spring and put it on a St. Croix Triumph 9' 5wt rod with outstanding performance. Not once did it fail me in drag, stripping line, plus landing 2-5 lb. trout in fast water. It performed well even when I put it in water, banging against rocks, and anyother abuse one could subject it to. A great value for the money guys! I fished the White River, Tylor River, Framington and Westfield East Branch with it."

Great Reel- Poor Mounting,
July 15, 2009
By:
RBenningerfrom Morgantown, WV
"I spend alot of time guiding in Maryland and our shop uses this reel model because its dependable and can take the abuse from clients repeatedly dunking them in the streams and beating them off the rocks.
My only gripe is with the company because when you select to purchase one of these reels, I never select to not have them mount the lines on the reels and I still get charged extra money for a service I did not want in the first place. Make sure you do not let them take advantage of you!"

An Orvis reel for not much money,
June 23, 2009

"I've been fishing all my life and this past spring I started fly fishing. To lower the initial impact on my pocket book, the gentleman at Orvis fly shop recommended the Clearwater reel. I've been very pleased with the quality and have the assurance of the Orvis lifetime guaranty. I would definitely recommend. MZ in Virigina"

Great value and performance,

"I have owned two of these reels and still use them and extra spools for different lines. The spools are quick on and quick off without a struggle. I love the sound and feel of the click and pawl drag system. I am too busy when a fish strikes to adjust a drag setting and the Clearwater drag always seem to be just right. The sound of a fish spinning line off the reel is thrilling, unlike other "silent" reels. These are great starter reels for the money and will give years of service."

Great Beginner Reel,
April 15, 2009
By:
ERWinfrom Northern Michigan
"This was my first fly reel and I can still remember receiving it from a friend after a trip to the Au Sable. The III has the perfect range for someone just starting out in fly fishing. You can load it with 4wt for small streams or put on a spool with a 6wt for tossing to bass and panfish; and for the price of the spools, its easy to switch. The gear is smooth and engages well. The performance of these reels rivals any other reel in the $60/70 range. I still use this as a back up on my back up 5wt. It has seen just about anything I can throw at it and still performs well!"

"This reel is advertised as having a disk drag system. It has a click and pawl system. I just opened the box and I will send it back and pay a few more bucks for a better reel."

ByOrvis Customer Service Team,
April 16, 2009
Orvis Customer Service immediately contacted this customer and confirmed that this Clearwater reel is a disc drag reel. (The pawl in this reel is a click pawl, not a drag pawl. The purpose of the pawl is to make the clicking sound in the reel, rather than control the drag tension.) Orvis thanked the customer for submitting this feedback and offered an exchange or a refund. Orvis will gladly exchange or refund a customer’s purchase at any time, for any reason; our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee is the strongest in the business.

Best value reel for price,
February 5, 2009
By:

"This reel is one of the best value reels for the price I own with it's disc drag and easy conversion from left to right hand wind. It is a joy to use, the drag is smooth and progressive from hardly any drag to fully tightened, the click pawl ratchet can also be set to off for totally silent operation if you wish as the one way clutch system prevents overruns. All round a great little reel with cheap spare spools too ! I have owned this reel for around two years now and it has had very heavy use and not let me down once , i intend to order another for my spare loan out rod very soon. well done Orvis"

The reel would bind up so tight I could not strip line off reel. This happened 2 straight years.A e-mail was sent to Orvis about this problem, the reply was ,try it again next year.I replaced it with a competetors reel.So much for the 100% gaurantee."

"I have two of the Clearwater III reels with an extra spool. The quality is good and certainly a steal for the price! My oldest one has landed some huge Bass (along with a Clearwater 905-4) and protected some very light (7x) tippets. However, after just over a year of use the click-pawl has begun to wear down and isn't as crisp anymore. It's a plastic part and isn't a HUGE deal but I imagine there will come a day where it just doesn't click at all. I'm debating whether to go through losing my reel for a week+ while Orvis refurbs it, or whether I should re-cast the part in aluminum as it seems to be the only part of the reel that is going to wear out."

"£25 for a reel is an excellent purchase. I need something that will hold my line and no more. This is a simple hard wearing reasonably light reel which is easy to adjust and swap spools. The click ratchet is loud and that is the only criticism. Still I'd recommend this reel to any one. You get a good reel with Orvis service and let's face it you can't beat a trip to an Orvis shop. Just shows a big brand can make real value for money quality goods."

"This is probably the best reel you can get for the money. I recently went fishing on the white and norfork rivers in northern arkansaw and the reel preformed excellently. Caught two trout over six pounds and the drag system worked flawlessly. many other trout were caught and this reel never let me down. I see many orvis reels in my future. Great Buy!"

"The very first fly reel I bought was a Clear Water from Orvis. I still have it on a Clear Water rod. This is my pan fish outfit. This is my Bream/ Crappie/ Bass outfit. The Clear Water reel is a very good reel for anyone just starting to get into fly fishing or as a back up reel. Don't let the price fool you, it is a good reel for the price. I use it for fun fishing(in the pond behind my house or the little creek down the road). This is not a high dollar reel but it will do the job for you. I own 4 Orvis reels .Why? Because Orvis reels are good reels."
