Not Waterproof, December 9, 2009
By: BirdingGuide

"These pants look great and are very resistant to rips and tears. I escpecially like that I was able to order them in custom length.

That being said, I knew something was wrong when I first opened the package, and inspected the tags in the pants which read, "water resistant". The product descriptions provided by Orvis all say "waterproof". I have thoroughly tested this in the field for about one year, and I am soaking wet from mid-thigh to the bottom of my jacket every time it rains. The stitching in the thigh and groin area leak every time.

The pant tags plainly stated that single layer ventile provides some water resistance, and that DOUBLE layer ventile provides an almost waterproof barrier. Orvis uses the word waterproof incorrectly in my opinion, as these pants are only single layer ventile in majority.

When i pay this much money for a pair of pants, I expect them to do what they say they will do. Buy an extra long waterproof jacket or expect to get wet!"

my "go to" pants, April 26, 2009
By: johnston

"Great for hunting, briars, rain and travel. Really exceptional pants. Only complaint is the pocket construction which does not match the pants. And you can see the pocket fabric some of the time. But the pants are great!"

Superb all-purpose trouser, April 25, 2009
By: Pumakawak

"Owning over a dozen ventile garments I was no newcomer to its capabilities.. this garment however, excels with its diversity! As a landscape designer, I'm complimented at the office for its crisp style and good looks and am personally thrilled with its field-worthiness when I visit project sites in all weather here in the rainy Northwest. Over time there's always a little shrinkage in the length, about 3/4" and less in the waist. I machine wash hot, with Nixwax tech wash or Ivory liquid, spin a liitle then hang to dry. My only suggestion for improvement might be to make the front pocket linings out of ventile instead of cotton twill. Occassionally, during windy storms, a draft or hard rain goes through the lining. Overall, a superb all-purpose trouser!"

"I hunt many species of upland birds and I hunt a lot. I live in MN and get out on average 4 to 5 times a week during the season. I hunt all kinds of cover and get into some really thick, nasty stuff. Some of the habitat I hunt requires tough clothing. In the past I have worn chaps but hate the extra weight especially after putting on several miles a day.

I decided to give these a try and have been very pleased. They are lightweight yet very resistant to the nasty stuff I have to go through to get to the grouse and woodcock that my setter and I love to hunt. I find myself wearing them around the house on weekends they are just so comfortable. At first a was little skeptical about how they'd do with thick brush, thorns, stickers, etc but they have peformed very well.

I recently wore them on a hunting trip to Montana. I wore them everyday in all kinds of cover (snow, mud, etc) and was very happy to have them. Walking 10-12 miles a day wearing these nice light pants was a life saver for someone that's not in the best shape of his life.

I know they seem expensive but I find they are one of the better investments I've made."

Great trousers, June 26, 2008
By: Biscuitlad from Yorkshire, UK

"These are fabulous walking trousers. No need to pack waterproof overtrousers any longer. They're particularly good in changeable spring weather, but I wear them all summer too, as they are so light. Their tightly woven fabric means they cut wind in cold weather too.

Ventile trousers are the future!"

Worth Every Penny, December 6, 2007
By: BHaden from San Francisco and beyond

"3 Continents and untold briars, thorns, tangles, bobwire, etc. and these pants just keep taking it. They are exceptional in every way and extremely comfortable. My friends with the "traditional two-tone" briar pants tried to follow me through some briars and ended up backing out and astonished at how I waded in effortlessly and out the other side. Combine this with the shirt and you have a comfortable, protective solution to just about any situation you will run into."

"You will not need to buy two pairs, unless you want a pair to alternate. I have had mine for nearly three years and they are simply the best trousers of this genre. Cool in summer, warm in winter, practicaly indestructable. When you put them in your washer, even at the bottom of a heavy load, when the wash is over, surprise - they are on top. They are that water repellant. Worth every penny. Need I say more?"

"Concerning your Ventile Field Pants - Central Washington wild quail and chukar hunting on private land (with permission) - barbwire fencing, wild rose thorns, sage brush, shale rock slides and other terrain hazards in weather ranging from 90 degree sunshine to 15 degree snowstorms. No rips, tears or other failures over two seasons of continuous use. They almost look new after 100+ days in the field! All other hunting pants I've owned in the past 30+ years are ripped to shreds by the end of the second season. Good job!"
