Mechanic's Sweater TALL, February 27, 2010
By: Travelwell

"I love the TALL Mechanic's Sweater I received recently. Many people have complimented me on it.
BUT
After wearing it just three or four times the left shoulder seam unraveled from the neck band to the sleeve. What to do? Call ORVIS. I was treated very well and quickly and assured that a replacement would be on it's way immediately. (I have not yet received it but expect it to arrive next week.)"

Great sweater!, February 24, 2010
By: IzzyDog from Vancouver, Canada

"I get a lot of compliments whenever I wear my black mechanic's sweater. It's warm, comfy and unique. I'm considering getting it in the "stone" colour as well.

It is a little shorter than regular sweaters, but it works well that way. I usually wear it with a leather flight jacket and it doesn't stick out of the bottom like other sweaters in my closet so they're a perfect match. I'd highly recommend it for comfort, style and value."

Great Sweater, February 17, 2010
By: SGKDHK from Virginia

"Purchased this sweater in black and liked it so much I ordered it in other colors. Get many compliments because of how unique in design it is. Get many people asking me where I purchased it. Fit true to size for comfort."

Perfect for everyday wear, February 12, 2010
By: SnowShoveler from SW Michigan

"Here in SW Michigan, we've been getting a lot of snow lately. Every day there are snow shoveling chores, as well as roof raking to be done. I wear this sweater over a mock turtleneck long sleeve cotton shirt, and a heavy canvas coat, and I'm as toasty as can be. It is rugged with the patched elbows, and the button up collar allows for heat exhaust or guards against the chill. This sweater is a winner."

Not to Orvis standards, January 15, 2010
By: Tekai

"Sweaters purchased from Orvis previously have run comfortably large - accurate - in size. Though the style of this was very appealing, it was binding and uncomfortable in size."

Response from Orvis: By Orvis Customer Service Team, February 3, 2010
Orvis contacted this customer and indicated that our clothing is cut generously for an active lifestyle. We regret to hear he didn't find that the WWII Mechanic's Sweater fit him as expected. Get this sweater now!!, December 31, 2009
By: PatrickB from Durham, NC

"First purchased the stone sweater back in 2004 and came back to get the olive and black sweaters in 2009. A very classic look and feel. The 2004 sweater has held up extremely well to 5 years of washing, wear and tear. It's performance played a large role in my decision to come back 5 years later. It has a unique look so expect positive comments. It is not a cheap sweater but as the old adage goes, you get what you pay for. Sometimes you simply can't afford to be cheap."

Great Sweater, December 19, 2009
By: BigDawg69

"Seen this thing in the airline mags for a long time and decided to get one when I was by a store. I was a little disappointed as I thought the trim and elbow patches were leather but they are not.
Still a good garment, I took some teasing for my "WWII Monty Sweater" but it was in good fun and have received several compliments.
Would recommend it, but think $98 is a bit high for non-leather trim."

I have three of them., December 15, 2009
By: callidad

"As the title of my review indicates, I have three of these gorgeous sweaters in this style and a few more in the Swiss and Half Zip style. They are stunningly well made, very unique (in fact, don't buy them if you live in Philadelphia, you'll ruin the "wow" factor for me!), and a pleasure to wear. I have had some of mine for at least three years and they still look great after a plethora of washings as I wear them a lot (every day once the weather is cool.) The reason I am on the Orvis site today is because a new business associate asked where I purchased my sweater and I was here swiping the URL for inclusion in an email I am sending her. She would like one for her son. I can't give a better review. Purchase one for yourself or someone you love (unless you live in Philadelphia.)"

good sweater, December 12, 2009
By: finnanruadh from Petersburg, VA

"Received this in olive for Xmas last year. Have worn it numerous times. It is warm, well-constructed and soft. I'm pleased with how well it stops wind. The canvas placket is durable and useful.
My one sticking point is that the sizing seems to run larger. My XL is HUGE.
Overall, a very good present and sweater."

Best sweater ever!, December 10, 2009
By: Calvin78

"My brother and I both purchased this sweater in late November in the Olive color and both of us have been tempted to wear it every day since! This is not only a very nice feeling sweater, but it's stylish in a way that looks good at the office in a business-casual dress as well as for weekend wear with jeans. I liked it so much I ordered another in the Stone color so that I have an excuse to wear one of them as often as I want."

Bad Outweighs the Good, December 9, 2009
By: Musiker from Atlanta

"The deal breaker was 80% with the placket in front. The fabric was folded where it joined the knitted portion and because the fabric was also heavy weight, it puckered badly and was also not comfortable as it lay on my chest. That might have lessened with several washings but I would have owned the sweater at that point-I would not have felt right about sending it back after I had run it through several washings to see if would lay flatter and softer.
Also, I was not totally pleased with the way it hung on my frame-that's the other 20% of the deal breaker.
I like the concept but it just didn't hit me right. Sorry"

What a Great Sweater!, September 29, 2009
By: circleshooter

"I got my first Mechanic's Sweater back when the only available color was olive drab - and incidentally, if you're only going to have just one, olive is the color to get. These are beautifully made, comfortable, and warm. This has to be one of the most interesting sweaters out there and I get positive comments from both women and men just about every time I wear it. I like it so much that I added one in stone."

What a Sweater, September 23, 2009
By: stevek813

"I purchased this sweater at the Orvis store on Michigan Avenue in Chicago about 2 weeks ago. It is very cold in my office and I wanted something that would keep me warm during the day. I was lucky enough to go to Orvis on a day when the sweater was on sale at the store. While I was able to get a great deal on it, I would have gladly paid full price for it.

It's simply awesome and I have received more comments and compliments on this item than I have on any other item of clothing I own.

You can probably get a sweater somewhere else at a cheaper price but I can assure you, Orvis has the highest quality sweaters I have ever owned. I will be looking at others and will definitely purchase more. I'm looking forward to the cool weather so that I can wear more sweaters."

Classic Love Affair, February 10, 2009
By: Martini from Bremerton, WA

"For some reason, I seem to be drawn to military style sweaters and this is no different. I really like the look of this, especially the high collar. I have the olive color, which seems to be almost khaki in most lighting. I would prefer wool over cotton but this one doesn't itch. The cut is a bit boxy in the torso for me since I have broader shoulders and a narrower waistline. Shoulders are comfy and it feels flexible. Overall, I'm very satisfied and now I look like my dad in his old army photos (he was an army mechanic in the late 50s)."

Hope you know how to sew on buttons, January 7, 2009
By: larryhairynose from Gig Harbor, WA

"I had high hopes for this sweater. I read the reviews and compared this sweater to others similar style sweater that are out there. I purchased this sweater and within one hour the first of three buttons fell off. None of the six buttons on this sweater were sew on very well. Luckily I know how to sew on buttons. Another issue I have with the sweater is the color. The color of the sweater on the website does not match with the sweater I received. My sweater is more of a green brown (and changes color depending on the lighting) instead of the dark tan shown on the website. The last issues I with this sweater is how short it is, in both sleeve and waist length. I’m sure I can wash it and stretch it but still, for $99 dollars I’d like it to fit better. I am not sure if I will keep the sweater or return it. I just wanted to let you know what you are getting if you order this sweater (a short, button falling off, green brown sweater)."

Not just another sweater, September 8, 2008
By: Bakes

"I certainly didn't need another sweater but this one looked too good to pass up. After the first one arrived, I liked it so much I ordered another in black. The style is classic without being trite, masculine without being macho, warm without being stifling, and comfortable without...well just really comfortable."

Sharp.........But, May 7, 2008
By: Ribeye

"This sweater was purchased when it was on sale and have worn it many times. Just about every time I have worn this garment, have received compliments on the styling. The sweater does fit well, however I did order a size up due to my regular size was tad to tight. Th only suggestion I would make to Orvis is to offer the sweater in tall sizes. The garment tends to ride up when reaching for something."

Perfect!, April 3, 2008
By: Homefront

"You know you have a great sweater when not only the woman but men say " nice sweater, I like that".
Great vintage guy look, fits well and is my favorite for any fall /winter occassion. Go with the olive. . . there is a reason that's the color they highlight.

At-ease gentlemen!"
