replacement rod, September 6, 2009
By: ideamanct from Coventry, CT

"I bought an original clearwater 865-4 tip flex and battenkill mid arbor as my first fly fishing set up. This setup has worked great, but unfortunately, I broke the rod. I sent it to Orvis for repair, hoping they would repair it rather than replace it, because the rod has sentimental value (I caught my first trout on a fly rod with it).

The Orvis repair shop called me and told me they could not repair the rod, so they were replacing it with a clearwater II. They also sent me the old rod back. The clearwater II casts well and fishes well (at least as good, if not better than the orignial clearwater), but it does not look as good. The handle is graphite instead of wood, and all the hardwater is silver, so my black battenkill mid arbor reel does not look right on it. I also miss the traditional look and feel of wood. Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy another reel for it right now, so I will just have to deal with the ugly looking but nice fishing setup for the time being. I would recommend the rod to a friend, just make sure you get a silver colored reel to match the rod."

Easy to fish for the beginner, July 15, 2009
By: Robert71

"I purchased the Clearwater combo outfit in February 2009. I am brand new to fly fishing and really had know clue what to buy. I went to the Orvis store in Pigeon Forge, TN and met a very nice and knowledgable salesman there who really took the time to listen and understand my position on my purchase. I had looked at several other brands of fly fishing gear beforehand and I just didn't feel that the quality was there. I was also on a "budget" but still wanted the best my money could afford because it may be awhile before I could get something better and I was a beginner to fly fishing. My other problem was that I'm 6'1" and 270lbs. with extra large hands and I tend to strongarm everything I touch. With all this in mind, Chris the salesman hooked me up with this set. It was beautiful in looks, very affordable and it it really felt good in my hands. Also Orvis has outstanding warranties on their products I wasn't to nervous about using it. Since my first casting class at the store to learn the how to's and the onstream class, I can't put it down. This rod and reel was the perfect choice for me to learn with. It has been a wonderful outfit to fish and I have truly fell in love with fly fishing because of it. I will absolutely buy another Orvis rod and reel but I'll never give up my Clearwater."
