A lot of sugar for a dime!,

"I purchased this rod during a sale for bluegill fishing on my ponds. The rod arrived late today. I carried the rod to my pond using you 4wt gen 3 wonder line with trout taper. The rod cast with great accuracy and power but displayed a nice delicate presentation. The rod has a nice look for the money. Great balance and solid construction along with light weight are other strong points."

First Rod,

"As a beginner to fly fishing, the Clearwater II Rod was my first fly rod and thus far has kept me more then satisfied as I work the pools, pockets and runs on my local river landing small Rainbows. I've always heard great things about Orvis and now I know why. I'd recommend the Clearwater II to anyone and am more than satisfied with the product. Rest assured I'll be returning to purchase other fly fishing gear from Orvis as I continue with this wonderful hobby."

"I bought this rod a couple of weeks ago; when I first pulled it out of the rod case I was super excited. I went to assemble the rod and noticed it had no alignment dots. (The Orvis magazine that I found the rod in stated it did). After using the rod around 5 times the cork handle is already getting pitted all over some spots where there is no contact between handle and hand but especially under my thumb. I’m not sure if some of the rods were made with a low quality cork but I have never had this happen to a rod before it is super uncomfortable and unpleasant to hold."
Response from Orvis:By Orvis Customer ServiceMay 3, 2011
Cork is an agricultural product and quality varies from season to season. The best quality cork comes from Portugal and requires 13-15 years to grow and harvest, and supply is very limited and increasingly valuable due to shrinking supply. The high-end cork we use in our premium rods is limited to the top 3% of all cork rings produced. We continue to maintain high standards on these products. Lower price point rods are assembled in Asia and the Clearwater series uses grade #3 cork supplied there. If the quality of the cork is unacceptable, a customer can return the rod and we will replace and upgrade the cork grip and return it in a week.

"Everything about getting this pole was a great experience... I window shopped online for months!
Knowing that I would be fishing the tight narrow spots on Willowemoc Creek to the bigger open rivers of the Esopus, Beaverkill, and Deleware rivers, I needed a pole that could do it all.
I borrowed an expensive Clearwater I from a friend and fished it all season so I looked to the clearwater II for its value and features.
I went to a dealer, brought my Clearwater I 6 weight and a Pfleuger cheaper combo 5 weight for comparison and tried out casting the poles. The 864-4 four piece Clearwater II far outshined them with its mid flex, nearly perfect balance, non flimsy very solid rod that you know is top notch when you hold it...
I mated my pole to a silver Battenkill Mid Arbor II reel (no additional cost) with the WF-4F 20lb line which has a built in loop making leader changes knot free and smooth when working the leader through the eyelets when landing your fish.
The cast is smooth and predictable from flipping to its dead on accuracy of cast. However, when you want to run a long cast the pole delivers it where you want it. The action has the sensitivity that makes you really enjoy working a trout to a perch, sunny, or bass.
At 36 years old, the 25 year warranty will carry me to 61 so I'm set with this 4 weight. With the 4 pieces and very stout tube and seperate reel protector that I connect to the handle, I can take it to Utah for my next trip and create new memories!"

Like Buttah!,

"I received a Clearwater II 864-4 as replacement for my Clearwater I 905-4 which had some snake guide issues that they couldn't fix. The exchange was REALLY quick and easy with no fuss and they were more than happy to replace my 905 with a slightly different model at my request. At first I was apprehensive about losing my trusty Clearwater I 905. I liked the wood reel seat and earthy finish. Upon opening the new 864 I was sold. The finish is beautiful, the cork is smoother and with fewer blemishes than my $600 Sage Z-Axis, and the carbon reel seat is slick. The new rod tube is a welcome improvement and goes along with all the other improvements over the first generation Clearwater rods. The only thing I miss from the Clearwater I is the compartmentalized bag. I don't like taking the whole tube out on the water and It's nice to have something to keep the rod together and protected. After it arrived I was on the water within 20 minutes, eager to give something new a try. I'm used to fast action rods so this new mid-flex would be a new experience. The only line I had around was 5wt left from my 905-4 so I popped it on with a black gnat fly. It casts beautifully! I was able to rocket some small flies way out. The action was so natural I didn't even have to think about it. It was very delicate, even with the 5wt line and I can't wait to get some 4wt on it. While I have much more expensive rods with faster action that will chuck bigger flies further out, this is my new favorite for small trout streams, and spooky fish. Beautiful rod and it takes the Clearwater category to a whole new level."

"This rod in not only a beautiful looking rod but a great fishing tool. This rod has done it all for me here in the east but also handled some lighter work while out in Montana recently. Thanks for letting me stretch my fishing dollar."

Great inexpensive rod!,
April 29, 2008

"I just recently received this rod and have spent 4 days with it on the small streams near Boulder, CO. This rod is amazing for the price. It is delicate enough for great presentations of small dries yet has enough backbone to throw some heavier flies and make some long distance casts. There isn't a better rod I have ever cast for this price."

I'm amazed,

"I'm amazed at the quality of the Clearwater II 864-4. I own 2-piece rods by Winston, Sage, and Scott and while I love these rods, the Clearwater 4 piece does not take a back seat to any of them. Light, precise and surprisingly powerful (for a 4 weight) it does everything I want it to. I bought it for travel but it has ended up my favorite trout rod. I fish a spring creek locally but the 864-4 does just fine in the pocket water of the San Miguel in SW Colorado, dead-drifting nymphs through runs."
