"This jacket looks great. My dog loves it and practically asks for it on a cold day before going out. The downsides are the lack of ways to clean it (like others mentioned) and the strap that goes under the belly. It fell off on a walk and I didn't notice till it was a good distance behind me because the jacket became lopsided on my dog. I think I'm just going to sew the non-velcro side to the jacket to avoid that again, otherwise great product."

Nice, But Didn't Fit,

"I would have loved for this jacket to have fit my dog, but it didn't. The problem is, Orvis doesn't provide enough sizing information for one to make an appropriate choice. As in:
1. Maximum chest size. The strap was about 2 inches too short to adequately reach around my dog's chest.
2. Length is a bit misleading. I ordered the small size, listed as 14 inches long. But you're going to lose about 1 or 1.5 inches that will ride up the dog's neck (part of the collar), depending on how tight you secure the jacket's front strap. This lead to the jacket looking a little bit shorter than I expected.
3. As someone else mentioned, these jackets should be offered in "between" sizes. The medium size would probably be too big, and I'm not going to re-order just to find out.
I did like the way the jacket looks (nice!). The sides are a bit higher-cut than on some dog jackets, which I count as a plus (think "clearance" for male dogs taking a potty break). But because of the bad fit, I returned it.
One final thing to note: the care instructions for the jacket exclude machine washing, dry-cleaning, and using soap. You're supposed to wipe-off the oil-finished exterior with a brush and water. That's fine for the exterior, but what about the plaid wool lining? What are you supposed to do when the jacket (inevitably) starts to smell "doggish"?"

"The waxed cotton fabric does a nice job keeping my dog dry. He seems to like it. Unfortunately, four sizes does not cover the canine size spectrum sufficiently. I have a large size jacket for my 60 pound, average build dog and the jacket could be an inch longer on both ends especially for rear and upper hind legs coverage. The XL is way too large for him. The jacket could also be a bit wider for better lower side protection. The velcro fasteners are okay but will come loose occasionally. Buckle fastener would be better...unless Barbour designed the jacket so it does come off should the dog accidentally get hooked like on a hunt. Overall, a good and attractive jacket, but Barbour should make some changes…even if the price will increase somewhat."

"I bought one of these coats for my Golden to wear espcially at horse shows when it rains. She is the most stylish dog around! It is very nice, it actually WORKS and she wears it well. I just wish that the jacket kept the bottom side dry also. A larger belly strap would be great (to help keep the chest and abdomen clean and dry) and more adjustability to the strap. Overall I have been very satisfied with the product, but feel there could be a few adjustments."

"I bought this coat when it originally came out years ago for my dog that has since passed on. I was going to buy another for my newest friend until I saw the insert picture that looks very different than the Item Description picture. Another review describes the item as having more of a "distressed look". The item description picture looks like the original coat that was very nice. This newer "Distressed Coat" is disappointing at best. Please don't take short cuts on old favorites Orvis."

"I love this jacket and thought it'd be great for my golden retriever. The fabric is sort of distressed, not like a new Barbour jacket, but that's not a huge issue. I think the velcro could be longer, so larger jackets could fit thinner dogs. Other than that, I'm very happy with this purchase!"

"The fabric and fit of this Barbour dog coat is excellent. The velcro closures on the front and stomach have been designed for ease of use, but the velcro is just not strong enough. The front patch kept opening repeatedly and I ended up having to sew it shut. The bottom one is working ok for now, but as there is also a buckle closure I am considering sewing that one as well just to ensure that we don't lose the coat in the woods someday by mistake!"
