"These boots are a vintage leather bomber jacket for the feet. The quality of the leather is exemplary, giving a look and feel that may be a bit stiff on the first dance but dips with grace once you're going steady.
Like a good friend, there is no doubt these will last a lifetime. Hunting pheasant in the first weeks of wear, I took them through a gauntlet of briars that would choke a mule. There were a few scratches but they only added character, and I can see how these will still be waterproof for a lifetime.
These boots aren't comfortable, nor are they uncomfortable, Ecco Trak's are the pinnacle in that category, but Eccos die an early death for the same price. This would be the perfect boot if they didn't have soles that conduct cold like steel and are the stiffest of rubber, but on the other hand that is why they wear like iron.
Despite all my attention to measuring my pods, these boots were a bit roomy for me, but the beauty of this make is that I can still wear them with thin business socks and tie them tighter, or thick woolies on top of cushioned inserts, which is recommended. This is the genius of the classic open top design, a better fit for every wear. With my 12.5's perhaps the non-custom 12.5 would have done just as well. I think they just sent me a standard 13D!
Also the soles on my custom boots are not the soles in the picture, I wish they were! They are stiffer and look a bit angular unlike the more rubbery and better looking sloped heels in the pic.
Another great thing about these boots is that you can get in and out of them like a first love. The shoestrings are literally the best made. A single knot holds like a promise and the boot straps are an entrepreneur's dream.
I feel good everytime I put them on.
They've grace the floors of church and business and have been muddied on sporting clays courses and polo fields.
My only recommendation is that Gokey replace these iron soles with an Ecco like sole, I'd rather resole my girlfriends with a new tread every five years (vs. 15 with these iron treads) and feel like I'm walking on air vs. the slightly harder than leather feel that these Vibram steelbelted treads have. But don't fear them, embrace them.
Not warm, but waterproof, not cushy but long lived, not stylish but respectable in many an applications.
A boot for life...just a Orvis always promises.
Remember, if you have to buy three more pairs of boots in your life, you bought the more expensive boots vs. these eternal souls."
