much too tight,
January 29, 2010
By:
rsl007from New York, N.Y.
"I had been buying smart wool socks from Orvis in the past and they were great but wore thin very quickly in the heel and ball of foot region. I looked foward to the invincibles socks both wool and cotton. I am 6', have normal feet and calves. There is nothing wrong with my heart so when I got pitting edema in my tibial regions consistently with the invincibles, I knew it had to be the socks. The manufacturer has made them fit like an iron mask over the foot. The quality and stiching is fine... the fit is terrible...absolutely too tight throughout but especially very constricting at calf level and ankle level... and truly at the end of a long day on my feet as a surgeon I have pitting edema in my pretibial region which disappears within an hout of taking my socks off. Most all the Orvis reviews state the same. Orvis should have the manufacturer revamp their specs."

Old vs new
"Orvis used to make the best sock ever. I still have multiple colors from orders placed 7-8 years ago. I live in TX and loved the fact that I could wear them to work as dress socks, around the house on weekends, in summer and winter. There simply was no sock equivalent in my opinion. Then, around 2 yrs ago, Orvis changed. At the expense of increased durability I guess, the socks I received were like putting a vice around my foot. I have a wide foot (E) and exchanged my order for the XL version thinking they would be wider and more comfortable. They were not. So, I still searched out similar brands at dept stores. What a joke. Nothing compares to the old Orvis brand Invincible socks. But my last 3 orders (2 tans and grey) are just not comfortable to wear. VERY tight. So I continue the search. I even called Orvis customer service and asked why they had a "Invincible Sock" online and an "Invincible Extra Sock" online...thinking that I was now just getting a thicker version which I didn't need. Both were too tight. So today, after going into the garage and trying to stretch out a pair of my tan socks (didn't work and agree w/ another poster about its like "iron"!), I have returned to Orvis and stumbled across the Invincible "cotton only" sock. Could this be the one?? The return to greatness? I just read some previous reviews that stated these too appear too tight..which has tempered my expectations. I'm still going to order today. Its worth it for me to find a suitable replacement for my old socks that are on their last leg. But still - after all these years, they are still better than the new ones in my drawer. PLEASE Orvis, go back to the drawing board, pull the specs from the Invincibles a few yrs ago, and let your product group know of the many posts from customers that have pointed out the change in quality. If the cotton socks I'm ordering today work or you all fix the "tightness" issue as written in other posts, you will once again have a customer ordering only these socks. Unfortunately, the search continues. I've attached a photo."

Great Socks even for Texas,
November 20, 2009
By:
ScottSfrom Longview, TX
"These cotton socks give you an option for hot weather like in Texas. The wool version are just too hot, but the cotton version are great. They are the best socks I have ever owned. It is funny that the Orvis stores only have the wool versions even in Texas. I am glad I found the cotton versions online. I had avoided buying the wool versions at the Texas Orvis stores. Order an extra set of navy. Once you put them on you will not want to wear the others you have in your drawer."

Poor quality product,
October 14, 2009
By:

"I have purchased these socks on a number of occassions over the years and last year purchased 3 packs. I have been very disappointed with the quality of this latest purchase compared to those bought previously. The latest purchases are a much tighter fit and have less material resulting in that most of them have now got holes below the elasticated band where they have failed when pulling them on. It's a great shame that a once great product has deteroiated in quality to such an extent that I could not recommend them and will not purchase them again."

pros and cons,
August 10, 2009
By:

"I had no previous experience with these socks so no expectations. What I was hoping for was a sock that would not ride down around my ankles when using my nordic track and these certainly do not. They stay up extremely well. That being said I am pretty skinny and small boned but even so I find these extremely tight and leave creases in the skin around the top of the foot. This improves slightly, - although not a great deal - with washing. The quality is high but I suspect I would have preferred the earlier model one of the reviewers mentions which had a more "cottony" feel.
I have bought many pairs of the woolen version of these and in those I have found that they too have been changed over recent years to have less wool and more elasticising content to the detriment of comfort for the sake of toughness. Much prefer the earlier version of those."

tough but less cotton,
May 19, 2009
By:

"These socks have been changed from their former qualities by adding more poly and less cotton.Depends what you want. They are very well made and very tough. On the other hand they are tighter and feel more like ski socks without that great texture and feel that the cotton content in the old version provided. So if you want tough and long wearing these socks are for you. I prefer the cotton feel of the former style. They also lasted pretty well but not as well as I imagine these do."

Ruined a Good Thing,
March 10, 2009

"I've been buying these socks for at least six or seven years--long enough to appreciate their value and have seen slight changes in the design and construction over time--and still have pairs that are probably three or four years old. They do indeed wear like iron and are extremely comfortable.
I recently (a few months ago) had to replace a couple pairs and so ordered some new ones. When they arrived I was surprised to find that the latest iteration of these socks is very different from the previous ones.
First of all , the fabric seems to have a higher non-cotton content. It is shinier, and does not breathe as well as the older design.
Second, the socks are extremely tight, particularly across the ankle/instep. They are difficult to get on and off, and uncomfortable in use.
I thought that perhaps they would "wear in" over time and after a few washings but that has not been the case. The fabric still feels more like synthetic than cotton, and not amount of stretching will make the socks comfortable.
While I used to enthusiastically recommend these socks to friends, I can no longer do so, and will have to search for a replacement."

"These are easily the best socks I've ever owned. They are EXTREMELY comfortable and are thin enough to wear with dress shoes. What's more, I've never seen anything like them in the market. I never thought I'd be raving about socks but you have to buy these!!"

Excellent Cotton Socks,
March 12, 2008
By:

"First of all, I have a hard time finding cotton socks that I really like. The all seam to become sort of hard, or rough and a bit uncomfortable. They always slide down my leg, and it drives me nuts! These are very comfortable and they stay up! I can't believe it. I am a fairly big guy with large calves and these socks are the best for cotton socks. If I were going to make any suggestions about them, it would be that they were a wee bit taller. Thank you Orvis!!!!
