Golden Retriever

Nope. Not tied with dog hair. This fly fishing pattern is a flashy version of the tried and true wooly bugger with a bead head, lots of shiny palmering and plenty of marabou in the tail for movement. Great for off-color water. Fly fishing patterns in brown, white, tan. In size: 10.

Excellent, March 21, 2009
By: DHeat92 from Harrisonburg, VA

"I have been a long time fan of these flies. I used to buy them off of a local shop but am glad to see that they are out to the public now. They have caught me more fish then any other fly hands down. I've used them for everything from small native brookies to rainbows and even caught a good many small mouth on them. I recommend buying lots of these so your stock will not run out on the stream."

"This is truly a "go to" fly. One word...it is a killer. I have caught every type of freshwater fish on this fly. Many times, after driving home from a fishing trip, I get to thinking that I'm a good fishermen. I stop for a moment, thinking....stupid, its the fly, not myself."

Excellent Fly - A Staple, March 8, 2009
By: ConMan

"This fly is a staple in my streamer box. I have been using them for a few years now and they are deadly on trout. Most productive for me has always been white but my best friend swears by brown. Go figure!"

Staple!, March 7, 2009
By: jaybo41

"This is one of those flys that's destined to be a classic and on everyone's top 10 list. Kudos Jim Finn for your development efforts!

I started fishing this fly several years ago and since then it's been a staple in my fly box. Any of these colors will produce fish so you can't go wrong with any selection. However, I recommend picking up several of each. YES they are that productive!"

Awesome Fly, March 3, 2009
By: Gatorinoz from St. Louis, MO

"I started fishing this fly about 10 years ago when I purchased a few from MossyJim. Since that time, I have fished this all over the world - ranging from the Southern Hemisphere (Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania) to North America (Colorado, Missouri, Arkansas, Maryland). This is truly a "go-to" fly for me and, as the saying goes, I never leave home without it. Fishes great on a drift for trout and you invariably get an aggressive take on the swing. Even better, I have fished these on Missouri streams for smallmouth bass and they are deadly. This is often the only fly I use for smallmouth bass; I fish it hard until the smallmouth bass have literally torn it apart and I have to put a new one on."

"The Golden Retriever has produced record catches for me from Montana to Iceland. Trout, bass, steelhead, salmon (Atlantic & landlocked) as well as panfish; this fly knocks their socks off.
Bouncing bottom or fishing it on a traditional streamer swing…the retrievers produce big time. A number of times I have had stocked rainbows swallow the white version when I wasn’t paying close attention…picked it up off the bottom and swallowed it! To describe this fly as another wooley bugger is like calling the adams just another dry fly."

a fly apart, February 18, 2009
By: wick

"This fly works. It has balance ,action, and coloring that sets it apart from other variations of the wooly bugger or any maribou streamer I have used.It has taken big browns on Mossy Creek(va.) and smallmouth on the James river when other flies were not working. It is my "go to" pattern for coaxing fish from undercuts or deeper water.A great one!"

An excellent fly for trout everywhere, February 18, 2009
By: RoseRiverFarmer from Syria, Virginia

"I have used the Golden Retriever for years. It is an excellent choice for trout that have seen too many black or olive buggers. This is a fly that should be in every fly box."

Great pattern, February 18, 2009
By: JoeT

"I have used this pattern for a number of years and have found it to be a great producer for Small Mouth Bass, Trout, and Steelhead. Bass and trout have seemed to prefer the gold and brown patterns while the white has been more successful for steelhead."
