"This is a lovely, timeless piece of equipment. Its everything they tell you it is, and it honestly makes me smile every time I fish with it (its my everyday working reel). It is a limited edition, and that's the biggest issue. Judged on all its merits, this is something special that justifies its price tag. Given the expense of classic Orvis reels on the secondary market, I don't feel in the least that its not only going to hold its value, but possibly even appreciate over the coming decades, perhaps because this is the last of the few high quality click-pawl fly reels available for purchase.
Its a shame that Orvis, a company that sells not just quality flyfishing equipment, but is such a part of the American tradition and its unique heritage of fly fishing, only produced 200 click-pawl reels this year, and likely for the forseeable future. Orvis needs to continue to produce and sell the CFO 123 in the click-pawl configuration without the speciality case, colouring, or numbered edition, and should do so at a price that's competive with their regular CFO reels.
I'm happy, and proud, to own this very limited edition reel. I wish I could buy additional spools, or even a comparision piece for additional rods, without having to resort to hoarding another one of this edition."

""I just received my Ltd. Ed. CFO 123 and I'm disappointed that the reel foot design and spec's of the previous CFO 123 click & pawl reels (of which I own several) was not adhered to. This new design does not work well with several of the reel seats on the rods for which the reel was purchased. I agree with much of what the previous (first) reviewer had to say on behalf of this reel. And, I too find myself teetering on the fence on whether or not I will keep the reel. This is a shame because it is a very handsome reel and leather case.""

"I JUST RECEIVED MY LIMITED EDITION GOLD CFO 123 AND IT IS A BEAUTIFUL REPRODUCTION AS STATED IN THE CATALOG AND ON THE WEBSITE. I BOUGHT IT TO GO WITH MY NEW 602-4 HELIOS ROD. IT HAS A REALLY NICE LEATHER CASE WITH FLEECE LINING AND SOUNDS GREAT! THE ONLY REASON I'M RATING IT A 3 OUT OF 5 THOUGH IS BECAUSE THE "FOOT" OF THE REEL DOES NOT FIT WELL UNDER THE GOLD BANDS ON THE NEW HELIOS 6' 2 WT. ROD. I CAN BARELY GET THE BANDS OVER THE ENDS OF THE "FOOT" OF THE REEL, ESPECIALLY WITHOUT TORQUING THE CORK REEL SEAT AND THE GOLD BANDS. I KNOW THIS IS PROBABLY EXACTLY HOW THE ORIGINAL CFO 123 REELS WERE MADE, BUT IT DOES NOT WORK WELL WITH THE NEW ROD IT IS BEING NEWLY MARKETED FOR. I OWN A CFO III FROM 1981 AND THE FOOT OF THAT REEL FITS PERFECTLY. I AM NOT SURE IF I WILL RETURN THIS OR TRY TO MODIFY IT."

Orvis Customer Service immediately contacted this customer and apologized for the customer was not able to get the bands over the end of the reel. This is due to the bands not having to go but about an inch over the reel. The bands are not supposed to cover the foot of the reel completely. Orvis also thanked the customer for providing such constructive and valuable feedback and offered an exchange or a full refund if the customer was still not happy with the item.
