Excellent jacket, February 24, 2010
By: OldProfessor

"I wear this jacket to classes quite often because it gives me a dignified but creative professorial look. I wear it with Orvis' brown Donegal herringbone tweed trousers for Ivy League effect. The coat is extremely comfortable, and it satisfies sartorial decor wherever I go, from church to the bar to student parties. I am happy with it in every way, wishing only that it would button over my stomach!"

A rugged Irish Jacket, February 24, 2010
By: WarEagle from Roswell, Georgia

"A nice coat that can worn with jeans or dressed up a bit. The fit is oustanding with soft unstructured shoulders with built in flexibilty. The color reminds me of Ireland instantly although the coat is made in China. The coat was on sale in the store so it was a nice value indeed. The only downside is the absence of pockets on the inside. I would love to have some inside pockets !!!

Nice jacket, you won't be dissapointed as long as your not wanting a more formal sportscoat look.

Thanks Orvis. This material would also make a nice men's vest ??"

"I purchased this jacket for my husband for his birthday. He usually takes a XXL or in a sports coat a 52 Regular, so I ordered the XXL. It was WAY TOO BIG! However, he liked the style so we returned the jacket. (Five stars for service and exchange policy! Your email chat service was very helpful.) We re-ordered the jacket in the XL size and it is a very good fit. He is happy! I am a little disappointed with the quality of the fabric though. I had expected a little heavier wool tweed and a little more "substance" to the construction - buttons sewn on better, etc."

stylish and durable., January 29, 2010
By: Karrylisty from Canada..former dj..broadcaster..nuclear spokesman

"Been looking for this type of jacket for a decade. It was worth the wait. The tailoring is very good....style is excellent and also utilitarian. It wears very well...well in the sense there is a feeling of quality and having something on that few others will have.

One other comment regarding Orvis products..henceforth, I order Medium sizes instead of Large. It appear the make them bigger in the USA. That goes for shirts...hats etc."

Great Jacket, January 22, 2010
By: CINW from Carlabad, CA

"I purchased this jacket for my husband for a Christmas present. He had seen it in your catalog and liked the way it looked. Upon trying on the coat he said that it was everything he had hoped: great fit, great weight, great looks. He wears it often and loves the way it dresses up his jeans when going out for dinner, drinks or just out for a drive."

button, button, whose got the button?, December 21, 2009
By: spaceman37

"I agree with some of the reviews here. The buttons were very loose, and I needed one refastened after 2 wears. I do, however, love the jacket. I live in the Northeast, where it can get cold. The jacket is light enough to not feel bulky, but with a sweater I do feel it provides adequate warmth."

one big flaw, December 9, 2009
By: Canerat from Boston

"This is the only jacket/sports coat I've ever bought or worn, including hand me downs, that lacked at least one inner pocket for a wallet. Yes, it has multiple outside pockets on front, large enough for cell phone, PDA, keys, comb, etc.; but do you really want to carry your wallet there? Pockets are too shallow to accept a 7" wallet. It's costing me $22 to have my tailor attempt to add an inside pocket; at the price, this deficiency is ridiculous, and there's no mention of it online or in print catalog."

Good news: the bad news is wrong., November 18, 2009
By: TerryB from Silver Spring, Maryland

"Thanks to Michaleen from Maine for sending in a review warning of two possible problems with this jacket: loose buttons and light weight.

The button problem appears to be just on the garment Michaleen bought. I bought mine at an Orvis store, and made it a point to check for that problem. Three different jackets had buttons well secured.

As to weight and warmth: I live in Maryland, where the weather from October through April is usually not warmer than 60, not colder than 32 (although mid winter can be colder). I think the weight of this jacket should make it comfortable for most of these six months, perhaps with some help from layering.

One complaint: the jacket comes with a flap under the collar to close the lapels at the throat in cold and blowy weather. The buttons securing the flap are poorly placed: I half strangled myself when I tried to button the flap. Some remedial tailoring needed here, if I want to use the flap. I will probably just have the top buttonhole opened and a button sowed in on the other lapel to close the jacket at the throat."

Great for pubs or anywhere else, November 18, 2009
By: ChuckH from Jackson Hole and San Francisco

"This is a handsome jacket. Whether you wear it with jeans or more formal slacks, it adds panache to any outing... pub or otherwise. It feels the way it looks... comfortable and warm. The only way I think it might be improved would be to add an inside pocket. It is a great addition to my wardrobe. I highly recommend this jacket to any man who likes to grab a coat on his way out the door, It fits almost all informal occasions."

mixed, October 20, 2009
By: Michaleen from Maine

"This is a rare mixed review for me. On one hand, it is a handsome jacket; soft donegal, nicely cut. But, I have some reservations.
The buttons were sewn on in a most flimsy manner; as if they were about to fall off. I am concerned when small details are not well attended to. Most everything from Orvis has excellent attention to detail; right down to buttons and zippers. This is an exception. The dangling buttons was the first thing my wife noticed, though she also liked the appearance.

Also, the coat is not at all for winter; it is lighter than it may appear in the photo, but is nice for the Fall.
It looks best with jeans, and is a casual jacket. Fall in Maine can be cold (mornings are generally below freezing) and even with a sweater it is just too light; though warmer climates might get more wear from it.

Nice looking, but light weight and perhaps less attention to detail than what I have come to expect from Orvis.

I do notice that the dangling buttons is not in any other review, so it may be just a fluke."

Good value jacket, March 12, 2009
By: JCJC

"Nice looking. Comfortable. Something like a tweed safari jacket in cut and design. Goods are nice in hand. The only fault I have is that it is hard to preserve the sleeve/cuff finish if you have to get the sleeves shortened."
