These boots need some design modifications,
December 31, 2009

"After using these boots for a week in the salt flats I was very impressed with the zipper design and the easy on/off. A fellow angler with a lace type of boot design was so frustrated with the hassle of lacing them that he left the boots in the sand at the lodge. A sock is a must, but even with a sock the sand will pour into the boot. I used a 5 inch neoprene gravel guard that I use with my freashwater waders and it worked well. I suggest Orvis look into a design that incorporates a one or two eyelet lace top above the zipper or a velcro closure to reduce the gap at the top of the boot. The use of a seperate gravel guard is also a good option. Please keep the zipper design. I think Orvis has the only design like this on the market."

good value when compared to competion,

"I have spent many hours in these boots. You deffinitely need to wear socks in these and ALL flats boots/shoes. Only complaint is that the boot lacks the support I need for all day comfort. I weight 250 lbs and probably push the limits too far. I wear them in the water and on the boat all day. Anyone who expects this or any other flats boot to keep out the sand and coral out is a firstimer for sure!"

Great boot, if you wear socks,
September 3, 2009

"I have a lot of flats fishing experience and learned the hard way that it is very important to wear socks whenever wading on a flat or fishing on a beach with any kind of footwear on. It is virtually impossible to keep sand out of your shoes, no matter how they are designed. Without a sock the sand that does get in will wear little holes in your skin. I think this boot works well because the wide opening at the top allows me to get them on and off quickly and easily. I wear a tight fitting cotton sock that I fold down over the top of the boot, turning it into a gravel guard. The sock is still tight against my skin so I seldom have a problem getting sand down between my calf and the sock. This is a lot easier than trying to get on a boot that has a tight neoprene cuff built in. I respect the other reviewer's opinions, and understand why they didn't like the boots. I don't think I would either if I had to wear them without socks. The description I read says it has a tight cuff to keep out sand and mud. I don't think that is an accurate description, but I do think that it is a good boot, if you wear a sock. Another tip, take the boot off and keep the sock on when in the boat. That way you won't burn the tops of your feet and you will feel the fly line under your foot if you are standing on it while on the bow of the boat looking for permit."

Very poor sealing properties,
April 13, 2009

"Bought a pair to fish the beaches around Cabos. The gritty sand kept getting in the top of the boots and it really hurt. I fixed the problem by putting on cotton socks first, then putting on the boots. I then taped the cotton socks to my shin with a few turns of insulation tape. After this, I folded down the socks over the flats boots and again applied insulation tape tightly to seal the socks to the boots. It done the job. I gave the boots to a friend when I got home...."

Superior seal?,
July 8, 2008
By:

"My local Orvis shop kindly ordered these in a couple of sizes for me to try on. The pair that fitted seemed very comfortable and I would have bought them but for the absence of any kind of seal at the ankle, let alone the superior one mentioned in the catalogue description. There is some elastic at the sides but the top of the boot is too wide for this to be of any use unless you have particularly thick ankles or calves that go down to meet your feet. Otherwise there is nothing to stop them filling with sand, mud or gravel. In other respects these boots do look very good and a little more thought used in their design would probably have make them my boot of choice."
