Dave's Hopper

Dave's Hopper

Dave's hopper fly is a great, classic dry fly that imitates a grasshopper and gets big strikes from trout. Fish this dry fly along the banks during the height of summer for the best action.

Excellent Hopper, May 12, 2008
By: ironwoodcountybooks from Midwest

"I've had great luck with this pattern in smaller sizes in the Midwest and larger sizes in the Black Hills. It floats well and I have great confidence in any hopper pattern than has legs."

"Hard to beat the excitement of casting Dave's Hopper next to the bank and watching a large Brown or Rainbow gulp it down."

A must have for Western Anglers, October 29, 2007
By: JohnH from Idaho

"I regularly fish several hopper patterns. Dave's Hopper is my favorite because of the deer hair head floats well and last longer than the newer foam hopper patterns. This fly should be in every western angers fly box from July through September."

"In Montana during the haying season along the rivers this fly is dynamite on breezy days. In a good year the ranchers can get two or three cuts of hay and Dave’s Hopper plopped along the banks can trigger some tremendous hits. It also is the fly of choice for the “hopper and a dropper” combo, for double the fun. We usually paired them up with a hare’s ear nymph 18-24 inches below the hopper. It should be a part of any anglers fly box."
