A Sportsman's Life

A Sportsman's Life

When Leigh Perkins purchased The Orvis Company in 1965, annual sales were $500,000. Today, the company is a $200-million-a-year business. This autobiography, written by Leigh along with author Geoffrey Norman, is an often funny, occasionally philosophical, and anecdote-laden story of an incredible man and the success he achieved by combining his passion for the sporting life with his talent for business. A Sportsman's Life has met with critical acclaim in the New York Times, and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and USA Today. It is truly a great read. Hardcover.

"I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend who happens to work for Orvis. What a great review of a passion for quality. Leigh Perkins accomplished what we all start out to do - he combined his personal passion with a business commitment to unsurpassed customer service and products. This is a must read for anyone who loves the outdoors and believes life balance is or should be achievable."

A GREAT AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY, January 13, 2009
By: ANTJ from Westchester, NY

"This book was well written and really gave a complete history of Mr. Perkins on a personal and business level. With so much gloom in our economy today it was a pleasure to read how this true American company grew to what it represents today. No cooking of the books or excuses just straight forward decisions that were not only made for the best interest of Orvis, but more importantly the customers that Mr. Perkins seems to cherish. This was my favorite gift on Christmas until I opened the Helios 12wt my wife surprised me with. Can you blame me??"

Well written and interesting, November 15, 2007

"This is a great read if you have any interest in the history of the Orvis Company or the sporting goods industry. The book is a biography of Leigh Perkins, but tells as much about the Orvis Company as it does about Mr. Perkins. I also read a similar book about the founders of Cabela's and this one is much better because you get insight into the real struggles of that Leigh had to deal with such as the US government's former ban on importing Chinese bamboo used in fly rods."
